Chapter 089: The Trap Room
It’s too late to hesitate now!
Jesse pointed towards the location of the mysterious light and immediately recited, "Fyke…"
Mid-sentence, he suddenly felt a thread in his mind snap, as if something had clamped down on his mouth, causing his whole body to be thrown into a severe spasm by the newly awakened Shadow Power, experiencing intense pain!
This familiar feeling… it was a counteracting magic!
After realizing what had happened to him, Jesse quickly regained his senses.
However, due to the recent burst of Arcane energy specifically aimed to interrupt his chant, he stumbled back continuously and fell on the stairs in front of a house entrance.
Just as Naga’s shadow materialized and swiftly approached, Jesse hurriedly got up and dashed towards the side of the house.
Darn it, it must be the stick in his hand that exposed his identity–only a spellcaster could have prepared that Naga to counter himself.
Jesse leaned against the wall and rushed to the side of the house. The sound of the Naga’s scales rubbing against the ground was getting closer quickly. This lady demon was faster than he thought, and she could do Invisibility… or was it Blink Spell?
It was probably Blink Spell, because invisibility doesn’t make you run faster, which can’t make someone go from the beach to the middle of a house in one go. He couldn’t tell the difference between these two spells yet, but one thing was certain: this Naga had some magic tricks for fast movement, so just running wasn’t going to help at all.
Jesse ran to the back of the house and saw a window above that was wide open.
Before the Naga could see him from the side, he jumped up the wall with all his might. After stepping on the uneven wooden planks a few times, he barely managed to grab onto the window on the second floor.
He had to admit, he was much stronger in this life than in the previous one.
He climbed through the window and crouched down inside. Listening to the rustling noises passing by below, he dared not look out for fear of the Naga finding him hiding in the room.
However, the Naga knew he couldn’t turn invisible or use any other teleportation magic. Once she circled the house, she would surely realize he had gone inside.
If he waited for the Naga to leave before jumping down, making any noise would alert her to his presence as soon as she returned.
So his only chance was to wait in this house.
Jesse took out the old knife he bought from the Westbrook camp from his waist, placed his shoes against the wall, listened carefully for any noise, and waited for Naga to enter the building.
The surroundings gradually became quiet, and in the quiet, he could hear his own breathing.
Slowly, he calmed his breathing as much as possible, trying not to make any noise. Before long, Jesse could only hear his faint ringing in his ears – maybe caused by the recent Arcane explosion.
Jesse thought about the tactics he could take once Naga entered – all centered around a surprise attack from behind the wall.
Greed had said that no matter what kind of mage, as long as she still needed to chant spells, she must be afraid of close combat. Not to mention this Naga, who was long and tall, would not be able to move freely in such a narrow wooden house.
As long as Jesse could successfully ambush her, no matter what he managed to cut off her body, he would gain an unparalleled advantage. As long as he could escape and hide again, wait for that Naga to be unable to stand waiting and leave on her own, or not willing to pay the price to leave, it would be fine.
Thinking of this, Jesse even worried if that Naga would come into this house.
If she didn’t come in, Jesse planned to wait here until dawn, as long as it dawned… Naga should have left by then, right?
The wooden house was different from the stone house. Any movement could make the wood creak unexpectedly. Jesse didn’t know how long he had been waiting when suddenly, he heard some strange creaking noises downstairs.
The Sethrak came in.
Maybe she had mentally prepared herself before deciding to enter, maybe she had figured out that Jesse might be in this room by now, or maybe she had quickly searched through the other houses and this was the last one left. Either way, she came in.
Jesse, who was almost falling asleep, suddenly became alert. He gripped the knife in his hand, thinking that if he had known he would have to deal with such a difficult enemy, he should have spent more money on a better one. But now he had no choice.
The rustling sound was getting closer, and Jesse could tell that she seemed to be coming upstairs.
Then, a very sharp scraping sound entered Jesse’s ears, so sharp that it made him feel uncomfortable.
The sound was very close, already on the second floor. It was likely the scales rubbing against the wall, creating an occasional strange noise.
After the sound appeared, the rustling of the scales stopped. Perhaps the Naga had realized that the noise they made was too loud and could give away their position to the enemy.
Jesse could only guess that this Naga had never fought an enemy in such a narrow room before.
After a few minutes, the rustling sound continued. This time, Jesse almost held his breath. In fact, he had deliberately lowered his breathing since a while ago, and now it was getting uncomfortable. If Naga didn’t show up soon, he might not be able to bear it anymore.
At this moment, the rustling sound had reached the next room!
In the hallway outside…
Jesse stared at the doorway, holding the knife in his hand.
Once he saw something appear, he would immediately swing the knife down!
When he saw a shadow flicker at the doorway, he took a step forward and swung the knife, but saw nothing! Wait, it was on the floor!
The sound he heard was the sound of a snake slithering on the ground. By the time this sound reached the doorway, the slightly raised upper body of Sethrak had already walked past the doorway, leaving only half of its tail under Jesse’s feet!
Sensing a change behind him, Naga suddenly turned around!
Looking closely at the face of this female Naga made Jesse shiver all over. Her eyes were as big as two leaves, widely spaced, with only two holes for a nose, but her lips were bright as if coated with lipstick.
Her slim jawline and thin face, smooth skin should have been those of a beauty, but with a few completely non-human features embedded in the middle, it sent a chill down the spine.
But Jesse was not at all stunned by this terrifying appearance. He decisively swung his blade, cutting off half of Naga’s tail. Naga did not expect this ruthless attack and let out a sharp cry of pain.
Jesse darted like lightning to the other end of the corridor. Naga cried out and chased after him, wildly scratching with sharp claws, making the walls creak and groan, but failing to catch Jesse.
With a significant portion of her tail missing, she couldn’t maintain balance. Despite her fierce pursuit, she crashed into the walls several times, unable to catch up with Jesse’s footsteps.
"Lowly warm-blooded creature!"
Jesse only heard Naga’s screams echoing throughout the house, feeling his head spinning with dizziness. This sea monster’s roar must have had a terrifying effect with its magical sound.
He covered his ears, enduring the noise for a while. When he regained his composure, he heard the sounds of impacts against wooden walls and chaotic howls all over the second floor. That Naga had completely lost control.
Come again, just come again.
Jesse crouched in a corner where he could see the corridor. Once that Sethrak came over, he would strike again, this time aiming to kill her directly, aiming for the head! Aim for the neck!
The last surprise attack was so perfect that he thought he could do it again, but soon the crazy noises outside stopped.
The whole second floor was filled with the smell of blood and fish, did that Sethrak get seriously injured and die?
Even if he died, Jesse wouldn’t leave. He would sit here and wait until that Sethrak bleeds to death… He would not make the first move.
Just as he had made up his mind, he suddenly heard a low muttering coming from somewhere in another room, the other side was using magic again.
