Chapter 077: Light Spell (1)
Malin said, "Elves are prone to being proud and arrogant, looking down on others. Those who are not proud enough easily become gradually insecure and sad over the long years, gradually losing the motivation to do anything. Their long age makes them unimaginably cautious, dragging down their initiative. These elders who are often thousands of years old possess terrifying authority, further limited by the closed-off Quel’Thalas, which restricts their vision… But if they did not have these faults, humans would not have had a chance to surpass them in magic."
"Even so, a lifespan of seventy or eighty years is too short. Elves can live for over a thousand years. The Sun King Anastrian once made an alliance with the empire’s founder, Thoradin the Magnificent, to teach humans magic, but that was 2800 years ago. Humans achieving such a lifespan seems only possible by becoming a Tirisfal Guardian. However, even with just one person, they can’t compete with the numerous members of the Quel’Thalas school, especially after the Council of Tirisfal disbanded. Guardians are now seen as the greatest threat to the Kirin Tor and the entire magical world."
Speaking of this, Malin shook his head and said, "Of course, pursuing these things now is meaningless. Azeroth is facing its greatest threat in centuries, and maintaining the old traditions of the peaceful era is no longer relevant. But everyone has gotten used to this pattern, haven’t they?"
"Let’s not talk about that. Let’s get straight to the point. For you to learn magic, you must first learn to communicate with Ley Lines. For those gifted children, this process may have already been completed in their mother’s womb, but you must practice consistently."
"What do I do?" Jesse asked.
"Connecting with Ley Lines is a difficult feeling to describe," Malin said. "You need to expend a lot of energy to explore their patterns, like sensing the heartbeat of an invisible person in the void. Sometimes it’s strong, sometimes steady, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. Countless other energies in the spiritual world disturb you, making you think they are the real heartbeat. But if you are misled, you will lose touch with the Ley Lines and return to reality, possibly attracting unforeseen disasters."
Listening to Malin, Jesse had a sense of déjà vu.
Isn’t this similar to his experience when casting Fear spells?
Every time he recited the Shadow spells, he sensed not an invisible heartbeat in the void but his own heartbeat. It wasn’t the real beat of his heart but the dark forces roaming within him that he needed to find and harness for his use.
Malin said, "I can teach you a very basic and simple spell, the Light Spell. This spell collects free Arcane energy to create light. It can help you sense the subtle connection between free Arcane energy and the entire Ley Line, gradually guiding you to touch the Ley Line itself."
"I almost understand." Jesse said.
"Ah… I can’t wait to see you embark on the path of magic a bit faster, Mr. Seso." Malin stood up and said, "Why not start the first introductory class right now? We can handle the formalities later." He walked around the table, to the middle of the study, glanced at the distance between himself and the bookshelf, and raised his right hand.
"Liusa!"
With a loud bang like the wind blowing, followed by a series of light sounds like wind chimes, Jesse remembered the sounds when imp Saenor disappeared and reappeared. That imp must have used an Arcane passage to move between different planes.
A small light point rose in Malin’s hand, although it wasn’t so bright under the morning sun, it would definitely stand out within the night of Elwynn for miles around.
The old mage pinched the light spot with two fingers. He looked at Jesse and said, "You can give it a try now."
"Is it that simple, Liusa?"
Before Jesse could finish speaking, a burst of flames suddenly shot out of his hand. Startled, he waved his hand, accidentally igniting a few books next to him!
Malin, eyes wide in shock, immediately pulled out his wand from his waist and pointed it at the bookshelf. The entire shelf was instantly covered in a layer of frost, and the flames turned into white smoke, dissipating gradually.
He ran to the bookshelf and used his breath to clear the frost on the layer, continuously touching the basic book, wanting to see the damage caused by the fire.
When Malin read the words on the book spine, he raised his eyebrows and muttered to himself, "So these two books are burned, so be it."
Jesse hesitated and asked, "Is this fire magic?"
"No, this is ignited by Arcane," Malin raised his head, adjusted the mirror, and said, "Didn’t Amy say you don’t have magic talent? Why…"
He suddenly seemed to understand something and said, "Maybe you don’t have a natural connection to Ley Line, but your spells… your spells are very accurate. Last time Duchamp also mentioned this, he said that when you imitate someone speaking Orcish language, it sounds very similar. He also told me that it would be even better if you could meet a real Orc, it would greatly help you improve."
Jesse thought to himself that he had indeed seen a real Orc before, but whether it was good or not was another story.
Malin continued, "Ley Line, Arcane, and all other powers have their own wills, of course, they have their own preferences, personalities, and will choose their users. The quickest way to get close to them is to make a pleasing sound to them, not only for them to understand your commands, but also to make them like your commands, even like you as a person. This can be said to be an important part of magic affinity."
"Of course, more complex magic cannot be cast by spells alone, there are other casting conditions, such as gestures, environment, the way and depth of contact with Ley Line, your mental strength, and so on. Arcane energy not only needs to be summoned and commanded, but also needs more guidance to create more changes according to your will. You can try again."
Jesse tried to raise his hand, stepped back from the bookshelf a bit, and recited "Liusa" again.
He felt like he sensed something, but also like he didn’t. Remembering the simple test he did with Amy before, Jesse felt a bit disheartened. But the fireball just now must mean he triggered some reaction, probably due to a connection with the Ley Line.
Thinking this, he focused intently on his fingertips, recalling the motivation he felt when successfully casting Fear before.
Liusa!
A faint white light flickered from his fingertips, like a depleted lighter.
"Is that it?" Jesse asked, "Is this… considered successful?"
"It’s probably close, at least had some effect," Malin said. "But this is much stronger than I expected. You’ll likely feel tired, so take a day’s rest before trying more. Managing your energy consumption is crucial for every mage to avoid permanent damage to body and mind."
Jesse chuckled self-deprecatingly, though he didn’t feel tired at all.
