Chapter 76: The Goal of the Magic School
Back in Stormwind the next night, Jesse and Greed followed the patrol team back to Eastvale without stopping, even skipping Goldshire to make sure they wouldn’t be late for work the next day.
That night, Jesse asked Imp to keep copying books, but the next morning he still woke up late.
He rushed into the Mage Quarter without even taking a bath, and upon opening Malin’s study door, he saw Malin and his daughter Amy Malin already in the room.
"Um, sorry," Jesse panted, "Master Malin, I’m late."
"I’ve been helping out these past few days," Amy turned and half-jokingly said, "Don’t you think you should pay me some wages?"
"Very sorry, Amy, very sorry, Master Malin, I really ran into trouble," Jesse said.
Amy chuckled, "Your assistant here… hasn’t even paid me once and has been late countless times already."
"Mr. Jesse Seso might not be an assistant for long," Malin placed the letter he was holding on the table. Jesse noticed the envelope of the letter was beautifully sealed with a golden lion head.
"When will he be back? There’s no need to fire him, Father," Amy said. "After all, it’s really dangerous to go to Stonewatch Keep now. I was just joking earlier."
Malin held up a letter and said, "Master Andromath just gave me this letter. It’s from the King sent from Stonewatch Keep."
Amy took the letter Malin handed her, read it, and said in disbelief, "Stonewatch Keep was attacked by Worgen? Why haven’t we heard any news here… Jesse Seso is the hero of the crisis at Stonewatch Keep? Is your hand injured because of this? Gnoll…"
"Mr. Jesse Seso encountered a Gnoll Warlock, and his hand was burned by fire magic," Malin said. "Master Andromath told me that the messenger was so excited, vividly describing how our Mr. Seso repelled the Gnoll siege on the tower. The messenger almost lost his life because of the attack on Stonewatch Keep."
"It’s unbelievable," Amy exclaimed.
Jesse looked at her with a playful tone and said, "Although I may not have much magical talent, I guess I have a knack for fighting."
Amy quickly said, "Don’t get me wrong, sometimes having too strong an affinity with Arcane magic may not be a good thing. Mishandling it can often bring disaster. That’s why the Wizard’s Sanctum tries to recruit young students while also finding those with talent."
"Having talent doesn’t matter now," Malin said. "Keep reading. The King wants the Wizard’s Sanctum to accept Mr. Jesse Seso as a formal apprentice. It’s not a big deal for the Wizard’s Sanctum. Master Andromath said if I don’t want to accept him as an apprentice, he will do it personally."
Amy was stunned for a moment and asked, "The King’s personal command?"
Malin said, "Strictly speaking, it was a personal request, but in reality, both the Wizard’s Sanctum and the royal mages serve the royal family, so the king could definitely command it. He has just returned to his throne and wants to make a good impression on everyone, probably influenced by Lord Bolvar Fordragon. I had hoped earlier that Mr. Jesse Seso would have the opportunity to learn magic, but there are some rules in the academy. If he becomes an apprentice, it would be helpful for my research."
"Whether you choose to apprentice under Master Andromath or me, it ultimately depends on your decision," he looked at Jesse, then continued, "Master Andromath specializes in Arcane magic, focusing on frost spells which are more offensive, while I excel in transmutation and protection spells, with some expertise in fire magic as well. Mr. Jesse Seso, if you are truly considering this path, this choice is crucial. Do not think about our relationship, think carefully."
Jesse had already planned ahead, knowing that the power of shadow could help him overcome difficulties in offensive magic. For Arcane magic, he didn’t need elemental fire spells, Frostbolts, or simple Arcane Missiles, as they could all be replaced by the strong Shadow Power.
The true irreplaceable aspect of arcane magic lies in its versatility and extreme flexibility, so his best option was to have Malin as his mentor.
"I have made up my mind, Master Malin," Jesse said. "I intend to continue learning from you, not only because we already know each other, but also because I believe that transmutation and protection magic will be more helpful in repaying the king’s kindness and protecting the kingdom’s people in the future."
Amy nodded in agreement. Eden Malin stood up, straightened his robe, and said, "That’s settled then. I will discuss this matter with Master Andromath this afternoon. You will officially become a member of the Wizard’s Sanctum and then my apprentice. However, I hope you will continue to assist me in matters concerning the relationship between the Red Dragon and the Orcs."
Jesse certainly didn’t want to give up this task, especially when there were still 10 silver coins to earn in a month.
After Amy left, Malin suddenly asked, "I heard from Amy that you have difficulty connecting with Ley Lines, right? She once tried you with a small rune to test your control over Arcane energy, but the rune did not respond to you at all."
That incident had almost become a psychological shadow for Jesse during that time, bravely showing off in front of an apprentice mage and getting embarrassed.
But it has been almost a month since it happened.
Jesse said, "I don’t believe a 10-year-old child can master anything through hard work and practice. I was 18 and still lacking in so many areas."
"There are still some differences," Malin said, "but there is definitely no gap that cannot be crossed."
"Of course, you can start learning magic at 18. The reason many magic institutions are unwilling to accept students of this age is that after the establishment of the Tirisfal Guardian Council created by the cooperation between elves and humans, there has been a relatively peaceful period for humans. The Council also hopes to reduce a large number of low-level members."
"So during that time, for most academies, magical achievements were more impressive than the number of magic students. Incompetent people would not bring any benefits to magic institutions. From that time onwards, most magic institutions shifted their focus to competing with elves, surpassing Quel’Thalas in magical achievements, and also vying for the speaking rights of the Council of Tirisfal. Do you know what the biggest disadvantage humans have compared to elves in magical research?"
"Age," Jesse said.
Malin added, "Yes, age."
