Chapter 068: The Top of the Watchtower
He steadied the sword in his hand, took two steps forward, but the Gnoll recklessly swung the two axes and charged at him. Jesse stabbed directly between the two axes, using the advantage of his longer weapon to move in close. The Gnoll, with shorter weapons, twitched and knelt on the ground after swinging in the air a few times.
Jesse had just pulled out his sword when another Gnoll clawed up the city wall next to him. He immediately chopped off the hand with his sword, but the Gnoll used its other hand to hit him off balance with an iron rod, almost making him drop his weapon.
The Gnoll pounced forward, and swiftly stabbed Jesse with a stick. Jesse agilely stepped back to avoid it, but heard strange laughter from behind.
Darn, there are more and more of them.
What’s even more troublesome is that he’s starting to feel a bit tired.
"Fereckert."
Jesse pointed his finger at the Gnoll in front of him and cast Fear. He was now quite skilled at using this magic.
The Gnoll in front of him, who was originally ready to charge towards him, suddenly changed his playful expression, let out a roar, and jumped off the city wall, leaving behind a rustling sound as he ran through the treetops.
Casting Fear didn’t seem to drain much of his energy. The Gnoll behind him, who witnessed his companion being scared off the city wall, stood frozen in confusion. Taking advantage of the Gnoll’s confusion, Jesse quickly stepped forward, moved his sword accurately towards the Gnoll’s chest, used the momentum to push the Gnoll off the wall, almost losing his own balance in the process.
Should he use group Fear now?
Jesse reached behind him and grabbed the long staff, hesitating whether to use it or not.
Based on his previous experience, group Fear not only scares away enemies but also allies. Can humans here resist Fear as well as Greed? It’s difficult to say.
These Gnolls… they are like madmen, some of them being huge barbaric fighters. Their resistance to Fear might not be any less than humans’.
After casting the high-energy group Fear, he would definitely expend a lot of mental energy, making it difficult for him to fight like before.
Releasing group Fear carelessly could result in hurting his teammates, aiding his enemies, and ending up exhausted and surrounded by Gnolls.
Thinking about this, he let go of his hand again.
"Saenor… can you hear me talking? If you can hear me, come out…"
He whispered quietly, not really expecting much, but suddenly a burst of magical light exploded in front of him. Saenor grabbed Jesse’s collar and asked in a low voice, "What are these ghostly things, master?!"
"How did you come here?" Jesse asked in surprise.
"Imp can turn invisible! Imp can travel between dimensions!" Saenor laughed, "Those fools can’t see me at all! I climbed in from outside the window, master!"
Jesse grabbed imp with both hands and shook him vigorously, "Stop talking nonsense, quickly shoot fireballs into the sky, hurry!"
"Although I don’t know why, but if the master said so, I will obey the command! But please release me quickly, master!"
Jesse threw him to the ground, imp stood up, shook his head and started chanting incomprehensible things, the flames in his hand getting brighter and brighter.
At this moment, the soldiers in the yard who were forced to fight back were not wearing armor or weapons, they could only fight the Gnolls with all sorts of random things they found.
The city wall and two lookout towers had been taken over by Gnolls, while another tower on the other side was being fiercely fought over. It looked like the two guards there were outnumbered and about to be defeated soon.
If the city wall was completely taken over by Gnolls, they could use the soldiers’ crossbow arrows to shoot the soldiers resisting in the courtyard wall, and Stonewatch Keep would soon be lost!
Suddenly, there was a burst of fireball behind him. Jesse turned around and saw the fireball launched by the imp flying up into the sky, exploding in a high place and turning into a cloud of smoke.
Will this work? Can the colonel see it?
"Shoot again, keep shooting!"
"I hear you, master!"
Suddenly, a Gnoll on a captured watchtower in the distance started making chaotic noises. Jesse looked over and saw all those yellow eyes of the Gnolls staring in this direction.
They’ve noticed… not surprising, if the cavalry in the forest can notice, then we can’t expect the Gnolls here to turn a blind eye!
"Stop casting, stop!" Jesse grabbed the imp and interrupted his spellcasting, "Save some energy. If any Gnolls come up later, help me kill them using all your tricks."
Saenor jumped up and down, asking, "Got it, master, do you want me to provide you with as much magical assistance as possible?"
"Yes! Yes!" Jesse said, "Blood Pact… If it’s available, let me know. If I die, don’t expect to live."
"Master, you’re wrong. When you die, I’ll be free!" imp corrected.
Jesse was so angry that he wanted to kick that guy to death. But suddenly, a Gnoll climbed up from behind him, extinguishing his anger instantly.
He turned around and the Gnoll dodged his sword strike. Jesse kicked the Gnoll in the face, knocking him off the city wall.
Jesse silently repeated to himself, just like this, just like this, as long as he kept repeating… all night long.
On the other side, a Gnoll just peeked out, and Saenor sang a short spell. The Gnoll suddenly burst into flames, screaming as it fell off the city wall. imp laughed loudly, his demonic laughter echoing disturbingly in the night.
"Burn you all, burn you all! Gwa gwa!"
Sacrificial magic… Every time a Gnoll was set on fire and ran in pain, Saenor jumped on their head, cheering and dancing in the fire.
"Devour your souls! Devour the filthy souls of you lowly creatures!" The tone was almost hysterical.
Watching the Gnolls crazily gathering on the city wall, Jesse felt his throat getting dry. He never imagined facing a whole army of Gnolls like this before.
Casting a sidelong glance into the forest, the dark aura was gone, and no trace of the cavalry could be detected. How much longer would this night last?
His gaze was suddenly covered by a Gnoll wearing strange chest armor.
This guy burst up from under the city wall, wielding a large spiked club, drool dripping from his mouth as he leaped towards Jesse, who quickly dodged to the side. The club smashed into the wall, instantly breaking off some spikes.
The Gnoll swung wildly, Jesse barely managed to dodge the attack by throwing himself to the side. His head narrowly avoided being hit, but even feeling the wind of the club passing made his ears ache.
Jesse took a few steps back, propping himself against the wall. The Gnoll stood firm and pointed at the imp, shouting, "Saenor, burn this guy for me!"
"I was already planning to do that without you telling me!"
