Chapter 059: The Legend of Redridge
In the afternoon, Jesse went fishing with Greed and a few local middle-aged people. Although they didn’t catch anything, they enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Lake Everstill and listened to many interesting mythological stories.
Such as the Lake Everstill water monster, and the mermaid by the lake, and so on.
The locals tell these things as legends, but Jesse knows that these things should all be real.
The so-called Lake Everstill water monster, described by the locals as a huge monster fish, appears every time during a heavy rainstorm, causing even the orcs to be extremely frightened.
Jesse knows that in the game, it is a sea serpent living at the bottom of the lake. Jesse looked at the lake surface stretching almost to the point where it was hardly visible, and the deep and unfathomable sense of mystery made it difficult for him to imagine what the water monster here really looked like.
As for the mermaid, it is very likely to be the Naga sea witch lurking here.
The residents of Lakeshire also know not to go too far from the town alone, not only because these legends give people chills, but more importantly because Lake Everstill is also the largest Murloc habitat in the entire Kingdom of Stormwind. The Murlocs living here could build another kingdom.
Murlocs are creatures in the waters of Azeroth. They have frog-like legs and arms, but with a big fish-like head with fins.
Some say they serve the Naga, some say they worship evil gods, and others say they are the oldest inhabitants of Azeroth who came from the sea before other intelligent beings.
Murlocs do not interact with other races or outsiders, but they have their own society and even know how to use magic. Other races try to stay away from them.
In the real world of Azeroth, Redridge is not just the area around Lakeshire. It stretches from the coast near Stormwind to the north of Blackrock Mountain and south to the large area near Karazhan.
People from Stormwind call this area Redridge because they live in Elwynn Plains and have to pass through some of the Redridge Mountains to get here. The locals prefer to call it Lake Everstill Valley.
Hearing various rumors and stories about Redridge, Jesse felt it would be very difficult to find an Orc hiding in the mountains like this.
He looked at the float on his fishing rod and asked Greed beside him, "You mentioned having a clue about that Orc this morning. Could you share it now?"
"That Orc loves catching river fish," Greed replied. "The local militia in Lakeshire has been keeping an eye on him. They say he is very skilled at fishing, catching more fish in one or two hours than all the amateur anglers here combined in an afternoon."
Lowering his voice and avoiding some nearby fish, Greed continued, "Even more than what all the amateur fishermen here can catch in an afternoon."
Greed confidently said, "He likes to go fishing on cloudy days, especially when it’s raining… These days, it has been cloudy around Redridge, and the town scholars say it’s likely to rain tomorrow. We can wait for him by the lake shore then."
Jesse, with some doubt, asked, "Did the militia track him? Didn’t the Orc notice?"
"He’s a spellcaster, not a hunter," Greed said. "If those Orc scouts were here, the militia wouldn’t have noticed them. Maybe that mage thinks nobody found him, planning to hide here."
"If he’s not a hunter, how is he so good at catching fish?" Jesse asked.
"With magic," Greed explained. "Didn’t I tell you people think he’s a mage because they saw him use magic to catch fish? He stands by the river casting spells, and the fish in the lake are killed by magic. He just needs to go in and pick them up, like picking fruit from the ground."
Jesse frowned, feeling a vague sense of familiarity in the description. What magic could kill fish in water? Ice magic to chill the water? Or corrosive spells spreading in the water?
Greed interrupted his thoughts, "According to the militia, some fish can’t even die. When he catches them, they’re still lively. A mage who can’t even kill fish, how frightening is that?"
"I can’t say," Jesse pondered.
"I’ve fought mages, Jesse," Greed said. "As long as you’re quick enough to close in before they can cast a spell, they’re as foolish as a fish out of water. Even if you face a skilled mage like an elf, they still must chant to swiftly harm you with magic, so you could just shoot an arrow into their mouth before that. Do you know why there are many mages on the battlefield but few travel alone? It’s for this reason. Keep them at a distance, give them space, they can unleash terrifying power. But once someone gets close, they become vulnerable."
Talking about this, the dwarf tilted his head and said, "There are exceptions, like the prince of Quel’Thalas, that old immortal. I think he has been alive for at least 800 years, I’m sure I couldn’t beat him even with my sword. Of course, we wouldn’t come across an Orc Great Chief in the wild, or his son, right? Like someone such as Gul’dan. If that Orc’s magic is so powerful, why doesn’t he attack Stonewatch Keep himself? He has been staying there for such a long time just to catch fish?"
"I still think your judgment, along with the militia, is too subjective," Jesse said.
"Whether it’s me or the local militia, we have truly fought against Orcs, but there is another situation," Greed added, "As you mentioned before, the people here mistake an Orc Warlock for a mage. That could be troublesome, even though from what I know, warlocks might not be as good at defending themselves as mages, but I haven’t had many one-on-one encounters with warlocks, so nobody can say for sure what will happen."
He stared at Jesse and emphasized, "I’m talking about encountering a real warlock."
Jesse rolled his eyes at him and said, "I brought 3 bottles of Shadow Protection Potion, the effects last for an hour. If we really come across that Orc, each of us can drink a bottle."
"You actually thought we might have to deal with an Orc Warlock and prepared in advance?" Greed exclaimed.
"It was originally for dealing with Gnolls."
Jesse remembered there were many Gnoll spellcasters in Redridge, and a Gnoll tribe called Darkhide had a lot of warlocks. He just didn’t expect to use them against Orcs before encountering Gnolls.
"It’s all the same," Greed said, "Great, now I feel much better. Mages are easy to handle, warlocks can be defended against. Tomorrow will be a piece of cake, and then these Lakeshire rookies will see our strength!"
Anyway, Jesse didn’t know why this duo was worth catching an Orc’s attention.
