Chapter 056: A Chance to Get Rich
During the Orcish language class in the afternoon, Jesse was distracted thinking about the imp and Redridge’s matters.
After finishing class and rushing home, Jesse looked at Saenor who was still busy and said, "I want to learn more about that thing of yours, the Phase Shift."
"Feel free to ask, master," the imp said while continuing to write on the paper.
Watching him busy, Jesse suddenly felt a bit guilty, he had never thought he would sympathize with a demon.
"I want to know if you Phase Shift just to become invisible, or if you actually change your real position? What is the difference between Phase Shift and Invisibility?"
"Of course there is a huge difference!" Saenor jumped up and said, "Mages’ Invisibility is achieved by manipulating Arcane to bend light, creating a space that fools the blind and foolish around, then sneak through it… However, while you can bend light, you can’t bend real substance. If you throw a fireball towards that unclear space, boom! You can see a roasted mage rolling out from it, haha! Whereas Phase Shift is a skill weaker demons use to fade out in the main plane for survival, something only demons born in the Twisting Nether can do. Not even Eredar can do it, because we are not mortals!"
Jesse said, "I can somewhat understand Invisibility, but I just can’t imagine Phase Shift. For example, if I put you in a box, you do Phase Shift, I carry this box and walk three miles to the gates of Stormwind, then you reappear, would you be inside the box or still at my home?"
"Of course inside the box," imp said, "How could I just vanish so easily?!"
"What if the box is smashed, would you die?" Jesse asked further.
"Maybe yes, maybe no," Saenor raised a finger, "It depends on the type of box. If it’s a magic cage made by Eredar, put me inside and then crush it, I’ll definitely be sent to the Twisting Nether. But if it’s a regular box that can’t contain magical entities, then no chance!"
"Phase Shift won’t let me escape from Azeroth, my master, I’m like hiding in a layer parasitic on this world’s main plane, still experiencing some irrelevant effects!"
Jesse opened the warlock’s sack, saying, "Get in, Phase Shift."
"Yes!" imp jumped in and disappeared in a flash of light.
Jesse noticed that the sack was shrinking down like this.
"You… come out again."
Bang!
The deflated sack suddenly expanded, and imp struggled inside for a while, saying, "Master, aren’t you going to let me out? I still have work to do!"
"Just stay inside." Jesse said. "Disappear for me!"
"Master, please don’t make me keep disappearing and reappearing. Each transformation consumes magic power, and my magic power is running out!"
Jesse said, "Disappear now and don’t come out again."
"Got it!"
A sharp sound of magical energy filled the air as the bag deflated again.
Jesse opened the bag and found only some silver coins and a rolled-up piece of paper that he had put in before. The imp seemed to have completely vanished.
He started to feel uneasy and thought he should find a way for someone to notice him even if the imp had disappeared.
In the game world, even when using Phase Shift, a warlock and their teammates could still see a shadowy figure of the imp. Looking back now, it was just a compromise for gameplay.
But if there were people in the world who could see demons using Phase Shift, wouldn’t the imp’s invisibility be unreliable?
Maybe he should wait until he meets such people. For now, since the imp can hide itself easily, Jesse should make good use of it.
Getting ready to leave, he noticed the wooden stick lying in the corner again.
It was no longer just a simple stick, but a magic wand made by an Eredar.
Knowing its connection to the Shadow Council, Teron Gorefiend, and Gul’dan, Jesse felt a sudden fear creeping over him when he touched it, as if some terrifying demon was staring right at him.
After thinking for a moment, Jesse decided to bring it along.
Carrying the Warlock Pack on his back, along with the package given to him by Malin, six silver coins, a few copper coins, his sword, and all the messy pages and books related to Orcish language and Black Magic stuffed under the bed, covered with a cloth, Jesse clapped his hands, then headed straight to the Mage Quarter’s stable.
Along the way, he kept observing the gazes of people around him, making sure that no one, whether an apprentice mage, an apprentice, or a real mage, would notice that he was carrying a demon in his bag.
The only people who paid attention to him only looked at the sword on his waist, perhaps finding it strange to see someone other than a Battle Mage carrying a sword near the Wizard’s Sanctum.
Upon reaching the stable, Jesse handed a note to the stable administrator, who was a chubby middle-aged man sitting on a chair, he glanced at the note, then looked at the badge on Jesse’s finger, and asked, "Mr. Jesse Seso, right? You’re going to Redridge, are you heading to Lakeshire or Stonewatch Keep?"
"Stonewatch Keep."
"Come." The man exerted all his strength to stand up, Jesse felt that this person might be the fattest human he had ever encountered in this world, did he secretly eat horse feed?
The administrator led out a chestnut horse, saying, "She regularly travels from Stormwind, Goldshire, Lakeshire to Stonewatch Keep, used to be a military training horse, but retired due to being timid, and was handed over here. However, compared to common horses outside, she still has a lot of courage. You won’t have to worry even if encountering Gnolls, this lady will stay calm, and surely run faster than those guys, take good care of her for me!"
Mounting the shiny-coated tall horse that was well-raised, Jesse felt completely different from the horses tied up on the streets of Lordaeron. This horse was firm and powerful as it walked back and forth under him, with strong legs and a stable stride, making Jesse feel comfortable even when sitting completely on the horse’s back.
Jesse happily rode his horse towards the main gate, going so fast that the guards along the way shouted for him to slow down and not to bump into pedestrians.
Passing through the main gate amidst a flow of horse-drawn carts, Jesse, towering over them, felt like a soldier, experiencing the thrill of driving a luxury car.
However, as the Stormwind patrol knights rode by on their warhorses, he felt as if he were a mere messenger boy in comparison.
Arriving at the agreed-upon tavern, Jesse tied his horse by the trough, then stroked the mare’s mane, daydreaming about owning a horse of his own someday.
He was almost getting lost in the exhilaration of the journey he had just taken.
"Ha! Are these the horses raised in the Mage Quarter? They’re so beautiful," Greed laughed as he emerged from the tavern, teasingly mistaking Jesse for a nobleman before realizing his mistake.
At that moment, the dwarf noticed the stick on Jesse’s back and asked, "Are you still carrying that?"
"This thing is too precious. I don’t dare leave it in the rented room," explained Jesse. "I’m not planning to use it in battles, but it serves well as a staff, right? You carried it all the way through Duskwood, found it sturdy enough."
Curiously, Greed asked, "Do you know what this thing is for?"
"Maybe demons made a magic wand for the Orc," Jesse whispered, "It’s strange enough over there, but it’s even more strange here!"
Greed leaned in close and asked, "How much can we sell it for?"
"I heard Ironforge has a group of warlocks," Jesse said, "If we get a chance to sell it to them, we could make a few gold coins."
Greed widened his eyes and said, "I’m glad I didn’t sell it to those silly Bronzebeard dwarves in Dwarven District. Or did they already know someone in Ironforge was interested and trying to trick me?"
The two crouched at the doorway and packed up their belongings. Jesse said, "Speaking of selling things, I heard about a place that specializes in selling rare items."
Greed took out a piece of dried meat from his bag, put it in his mouth, tightened the bag on his back, and asked, "Where is it?"
"Booty Bay."
"You mean the goblin town by the sea in Stranglethorn," Greed clarified.
"Yes," Jesse confirmed, "There’s a marketplace run by goblins that supposedly sells rare things for a good price. Do you remember the letter we found on that Orc’s body last time?"
"That letter?" Greed asked, "Are you sure it’s a letter?"
Jesse raised an eyebrow and said, "Do you know Teron Gorefiend?"
"Of course, Death Knight… the vanguard of the Horde!"
"That is a letter written by Teron Gorefiend to his subordinate."
"Really?"
"Really." Jesse said, "Can you guess how much this letter would be worth to those collectors who gather important lost items from Orcs? It’s from Teron Gorefiend!"
Greed licked his lips, looked at the ground for a moment, and said, "It’s unbelievable, opportunities to get rich are everywhere. While the Orcs are not completely wiped out yet, shouldn’t we look for more of these chances to make some ‘war profits’ or something? You do want to bring your parents to Stormwind, right? Just working here won’t be enough to afford a house in the city."
He scratched his beard on his chin, "But Stranglethorn is too far, it takes a long time for a ship to go from Stormwind Harbor to Booty Bay, and the fare isn’t cheap. If we can’t sell it for a good price, or even sell it at all, wouldn’t that be a big loss?"
"That’s true," Jesse said, "Let’s see how things go, or I’ll ask around in Stormwind if there are people willing to buy these things, and we can go to Booty Bay in the future."
Greed nodded and said, "Let’s hit the road. We won’t make it to Eastvale Inn before dark if we don’t leave soon."
