Chapter 055: The First Messenger Task
Morning had already wasted a lot of time, Jesse quickly arranged the imp and ran like mad towards the Mage Quarter.
Ever since finding work in the Mage Quarter, he felt his endurance was improving, running several miles every morning, then cleaning rooms non-stop for an hour, exercising both his body and patience, a form of training indeed.
Shortly after finishing cleaning and sitting down with a book, Malin arrived.
He looked at Jesse holding the book and panting heavily, and said, "I have a task to do, now that you are so tired, can we talk later?"
Jesse closed the book in his hand and said, "Just did some exercise, Master, go ahead."
"Where is the tea?" Malin looked at the empty teapot and asked, "Did you forget today?"
"Ah," Jesse scratched his head and said, "Sorry, I came late today."
"It’s okay," Malin said. "Let me tell you about this task. I need someone to deliver a letter and some materials to Stonewatch Keep in Redridge. Do you have time to help?"
"Stonewatch Keep in Redridge?" Jesse asked.
"Yes," Malin pulled out a big package from under the table and said, "Deliver these items to Stonewatch Keep, along with this letter. It was originally for a mage, but he is always away. So, I wrote it in the name of his student to make it easier for you."
He placed the sealed letter in the package and continued, "It’s best to deliver this within the week, which gives you three days. If you leave right after your afternoon classes, you’ll have enough time, as you will need to rest one night in Lakeshire and one night in Stonewatch Keep."
"No problem." Since Jesse had agreed to help Malin with more tasks for an extra 4 silver coins per month, delivering the letter was a simple task.
Malin reminded him, "But don’t rush. It’s better to travel with the Stormwind soldiers on patrol to Stonewatch Keep. Don’t go alone, as the Gnoll issue there is not completely resolved, and there are still risks."
"So, can I rent a horse for free?" Jesse eagerly asked.
"Oh, right." Malin took a note from the drawer, wrote something on it, put his seal on it, and said, "Take this to the stable administrator, the person so fat you can recognize him at a glance, he will lend you a horse."
Jesse held the note tightly in his hand, feeling very excited.
In his excitement, he suddenly remembered about the imp.
Can Malin sense anything unusual from him? Like the demonic aura that may linger after contacting demons, or the Dark Energy that may surround him after summoning a demon?
After helping Malin prepare tea, he sat beside him observing Malin’s actions, wanting to see if this cup of tea would be affected by him in any way, but Malin simply drank the tea casually, then continued reading as if nothing had happened.
Is that imp really that powerful?
Or is it because he is not powerful at all, so the energy released is so weak that others can’t even feel it?
In any case, since Malin can’t sense it, ordinary people wouldn’t notice anything unusual either.
He was initially worried that he wouldn’t be able to enter the Wizard’s Sanctum for a while after summoning the imp, but now it seems that the impact of summoning a demon is not as significant as he had imagined.
Thinking about all the powerful warlocks secretly working in Dalaran, some even stronger than the ones in Stormwind, where the whole city is protected by Antonidas’ magic barrier.
Saenor was still busy translating when he got home at noon.
Jesse flipped through the pages, but progress was slow. He had only translated the beginning of the book, which probably had over a hundred pages.
However, he understood the challenges of translation work. Some words in this language had no equivalent in another language, so he had to explain them as best as he could, as there was no magic translation app in this world.
"Human pens are so difficult to use!" complained Saenor.
"Having a pen is already good enough," Jesse replied. "Be careful with it, I can’t afford to buy a new one if you break it."
He looked sadly at his almost empty wallet and sat on the bed.
Checking the time, he realized he still had to wait a week before getting his salary.
He decided to treat Greed to a meal this time, then attend his Orcish language class, and finally hit the road.
Two friends took a seat at a cozy Ironforge-style tavern in the Dwarven District. Greed was clearly doing well lately. Jesse looked at his new dark yellow coat and said, "Are you trying out the Bronzebeard style with this?"
Greed grinned and replied, "Bronzebeard and Ironforge shouldn’t have a monopoly on these understated colors, Jesse."
"Speaking of clothes," he took the stick-like bread offered by the sommelier, tore off a piece, stuffed some blood sausage inside, and popped it into his mouth. He chewed and said, "I made a outfit from the wolveskin of the Great Lake Farm. I had a dwarf tailor make it, it’s very fancy. It’s tailored to your height, come try it on at my place sometime."
"It’s still hot now, no rush," Jesse said. "My tiny shabby house can barely fit another piece of clothing!"
"By the way," Greed mentioned, "What do you think about going to Aerie Peak for The Feast of Winter Veil? It’s already October, I want to leave at least a month in advance to avoid any complications. Look, we should start preparing around mid-November."
Jesse took a bite of the blood sausage, pondering over Greed’s words, his recently summoned imp, the dreadful Fear, and that magic wand…
He knew he had to take the magic wand with him when travelling, there was no way he could leave such a precious item in Stormwind for a month.
Bringing so many dark-tainted items to Aerie Peak, wouldn’t it be asking for trouble?
But refusing Greed outright also felt strange.
After all, he also wanted to find a chance to visit his parents in the Kingdom of Lordaeron during The Feast of Winter Veil. The Hinterlands and Kingdom of Lordaeron were not too far apart, only separated by the Alterac Mountains. If he went back to Lordaeron without also visiting the Hinterlands, it would seem like he was intentionally avoiding Greed.
Not to mention, there were gryphons. He wanted to see a real gryphon, and as long as he agreed, he could see one.
"Of course, I’ll go." He swallowed a sausage, took a sip of grape juice, and said, "No problem."
Greed said, "Your ‘of course’ hesitated for a minute."
"Has it been that long?" Jesse said. "I was just thinking about the journey ahead, crossing the Palatine Bay, crossing the Hillsbrad Foothills. You know, those Orcs…"
Greed used a dining knife to pick his teeth and said, "In Hillsbrad, Terenas II appointed a new lord to Durnholde Keep, a war hero named Aedelas Blackmoore. Have you heard of him? He’s quite something – some say he’s all over the Hillsbrad Foothills, hunting down Orcs, capturing Orc fugitives, locking them up in the castle, organizing a gladiator arena for the Orcs and beasts to fight each other, attracting nobles from Lordaeron to watch, and using the funds to continue the hunt and capture of Orcs. I think his operation is getting bigger and the Hillsbrad Foothills are becoming safer."
Jesse certainly knew about this Blackmoore; the Horde Great Chief Thrall had grown up as a young Orc gladiator under his rule.
"You’re quite well-informed."
Greed said, "Of course, I also need to consider the safety on the way home. These things must be understood, it’s fine for you to come with me, Jesse. I’ve figured it all out."
"In that case, I’ll rely on you," Jesse said. "When I come back from Lordamere, let’s meet in Southshore and then head to Hinterlands, what do you think?"
"Sure, I must take you to Aerie Peak and visit my home," Greed took a sip of milk and said. "The route we take doesn’t really matter."
Jesse noticed milk on Greed’s beard and asked, "Do you have any plans for today?"
"Yes," Greed wiped his mouth and said, "Tomorrow or the day after, I need to go to the east. There’s a job for the Warrior Guild there."
"To the east, Eastvale, or are you heading to Redridge?"
"Redridge."
"That works out perfectly."
Jesse put Malin’s rental note on the table and said, "Why not go today? I’ll ride with you."
Greed picked up the note and asked, "Are you going to Redridge too?"
Jesse nodded and said, "I’m going to Stonewatch Keep to deliver something. It’s on the way, so let’s go together."
Greed grinned and said, "Great, that way we can save some money on the journey."
"By the way, why didn’t you invite me when you went to Redridge?" Jesse asked.
The smile on the dwarf’s face seemed to freeze.
"I didn’t know what kind of work was there. What if it was something like delivering letters, just like what you do? It would be a waste to bring you along," he continued.
Jesse raised his index finger and asked, "Does your Warrior Guild help with delivering letters? You know that going there either involves fighting or capturing someone, not just boring tasks like delivering letters or moving things. So why didn’t you invite me?"
Greed put down his cup and said with resignation, "…Let me be frank with you."
"After coming back from Great Lake Farm that day, Jesse, I had nightmares for several days in a row. I suspect it’s related to your magic. If I hadn’t been feeling better these past few days, I would have gone crazy. If we run into trouble again, and you unleash something even bigger, I really can’t handle it," he confessed.
"Didn’t I promise you to use less of that magic from now on?" Jesse said. "I don’t use it just because I want to. It’s not easy to control, and I’ve only been figuring out how to use it."
Greed said, "Okay, let’s agree in advance that we won’t use those magic powers again unless it’s a life-threatening situation."
"Sure, just don’t always make things so dangerous," Jesse said helplessly.
The dwarf waved his hand and said, "Alright, I got it. So, let’s meet at the old spot by the city gate in an hour."
Jesse said, "One hour is too soon, I still have a class later, in three hours."
"You have a class? Then let’s meet in three hours."
