Chapter 054: The Work Diary of Stormwind Imp
The next morning, Jesse woke up and sat on the bed. The room was empty with nothing inside.
Jesse rubbed his eyes and looked at the crumpled paper on the table with words about summoning magic. However, the imp in the room was nowhere to be found.
It was already getting bright outside, and he felt like he hadn’t slept for long.
Had the imp escaped? Or had it never been there in the first place, was last night just a dream?
Reluctantly, he opened his mouth and tried to say, "Come out, Saenor."
Suddenly, a flash of light burst from the floor, and Saenor jumped out, startling Jesse.
"Master, I will obey your commands. I will remain invisible as long as there is a third party present!"
"A third party?" Jesse looked around, checked under the bed, glanced in the cupboard, and behind the door. After confirming that this small room of 5 to 6 square meters was unlikely to hide anyone, he asked, "Where is the third party?"
"Outside," Saenor said, "I hear many voices, maybe some priests and Paladins among them?"
"Probably, you did well," Jesse said, "you should be this careful."
Though he almost thought there were ghosts at home, he was pleased that the imp obeyed him.
The imp happily hopped back and forth, asking, "Do you have any new commands, master?"
"Guard the house," Jesse picked up clothes and said, "stay here all day, remain invisible, don’t open the door for anyone."
"Got it!" the imp hopped onto the table and vanished in a flash of light.
As Jesse was about to grab his pants, he saw the magic wand placed in the corner of the room.
"Come out, Saenor."
The imp reappeared and asked, "Anything else, master?"
"Do you know this magic wand?" Jesse asked.
"Of course, I don’t know," imp laughed, saying, "Eredar makes too many things, how could I possibly recognize just any magic wand?!"
Jesse’s brain felt foggy for a moment, "Is this Eredar’s magic wand?"
"Made by Eredar, but not necessarily used by Eredar, right, master?" imp said, "Look at the material of this magic wand, this is a substance called Shadowsteel, only found in the Twisting Nether on Argus, a beautiful metal there, called Celestial Gold, left behind after fel magic and shadow transformation. And Argus… that is the homeland of the Eredar!"
Transformation? Could it be contamination…?
Saenor touched the surface of the magic wand, shook his head, and said, "Those Eredar Wizards like to give the artifacts they make to their slaves and servants as gifts, to show off their power. Master, you’re not an Eredar servant, right? In that case, I am a servant of an Eredar servant, so impressive."
Jesse was stunned for a moment, Saenor’s words reminded him of the possible origin of this magic wand.
Gul’dan was originally guided by Kil’jaeden, the leader of the Eredar, acting as the right hand of Sargeras, rising from a discarded outcast to founder of the Shadow Council.
This magic wand may have been one of the many magical artifacts he obtained from the Eredar demons among the Burning Legion after cooperating with them. In order to gain Teron’gor’s loyalty, he then gifted this magic wand to him.
"You know a lot, Saenor," Jesse nodded happily and said, "Don’t just stay idle at home today, help me out."
"I’m willing to help, master!" imp said excitedly.
Jesse said, "Here, take a look at this book."
He took out the thick bilingual book from the cupboard and handed it to imp, saying, "What language is in here."
Saenor took it, flipped through a few pages and said, "It has Demonic, Pit Lord’s language… and… a kind of runic language that I don’t understand."
"That is the Language Orcish," Jesse said.
Indeed, it was a so-called bilingual dictionary specifically for Orc Warlocks to learn spell incantations.
"So, you translate all the Demonic on top into common language, write down the comparisons, pronunciations, and then copy it onto these papers," Jesse pulled out a stack of cheap parchment he used as toilet paper and notebooks.
It was only when he laid out the papers in front of him that he realized the ink and pens he had prepared to transcribe the Gorefiend command earlier were far from enough for this amount of work.
He gave the ink and feather pen to imp and said, "Start copying with these first, I will find a way to get you some ink later."
Imp stared at the big book and paper that were handed to him, bigger than himself, and was at a loss for words.
"Alright, let’s start working, my good servant." Jesse rubbed his hands, just about to leave with his clothes when he turned back as if remembering something, and said, "If anyone passes by the door, remember to pause your work and hide yourself. But if anyone breaks in and touches that magic wand, use all your magic to blast him to death for me, no matter who it is!"
Imp exclaimed, "Yes! I will obey my master’s command!"
"Very well!" Jesse rushed out the door, heading straight for the canal bridge.
There were many places in the city selling paper and ink, the cheapest being the Mage Quarter belonging to the university’s Magic and Science Research Institute.
Following the canal, Jesse crossed the Stormwind Prison’s tower and could see the institute building. After getting 10 silver coins, ordering a sword from a blacksmith, and buying clothes in the past two days, this was basically half of what he had left.
Early in the morning, there were already many people in the Magic and Science Research Institute. It was the second largest library in Stormwind, but more focused on ordinary people and university students compared to the library in the Wizard’s Sanctum.
"I would like to buy some ink," Jesse ran to the library administrator’s counter and said, "Also, I’ll take some paper."
The administrator took out a bottle of ink and then brought out a big bag of paper, counting out each sheet for Jesse.
"Regular quality paper, 1 gold and 18 copper for a dozen sheets, ink 5 gold for a bottle."
Halfway through counting, he glanced at Jesse and asked, "How much do you need?"
Jesse was still processing the outrageous prices. He struggled to come out of the wolves’ den just to earn a bottle of ink.
But he couldn’t save that much money anymore.
If it was a small amount of paper and ink, he might be able to ask the boss Malin for some, but if it was too much, it would definitely raise suspicions.
He wasn’t an apprentice anymore. Even if he was taking Orcish language lessons, there was no need to use that much paper and ink.
"I… I’ll take a bottle of ink first, and then three dozen sheets of paper."
After selling the paper and ink, Jesse rushed back home, while the imp had already written some by then.
Jesse looked at the words on the paper and said, "You wrote these words too big. Write them smaller and closer together. Dilute the ink a bit with water so it’s easier to read! Save me some…"
"Understood, master." Saenor nodded anxiously.
Jesse brought up a bucket of river water from downstairs, wiped the sweat off his face, and said, "My future depends on you. Do a good job and there will be a reward."
"What kind of reward?" imp suddenly asked.
The question about the reward left Jesse confused.
"What do you want?"
"I want mortal souls…" imp licked his lips and said, "Delightful Soul Shards, mellifluous wails, delectable pain and sweetness. Have you ever tasted them, master?"
"I’m not like you," Jesse asked. "Do only mortals have the souls you desire?"
"Even beasts have souls, they’re just not as interesting as intelligent beings," imp said, tilting his head.
Jesse thought since it was said so, the souls of the Gnolls in Elwynn Forest should do, after all they are considered somewhat intelligent beings.
"Just wait, there might be a chance."
The imp smirked twice and said, "Oh, master is truly kind to me."
