Chapter 468: Essence of Undeath
After bidding farewell to Ursula, Jesse boarded a goblin merchant ship heading to Booty Bay alone.
Thinking about meeting the Elf Mages of Reliquary, there may not be many mages in the world who are better at finding signs of demons than them.
So he decided not to bring the two demons with him for now.
Although he was still going to the chaotic place of Booty Bay, his feelings this time were completely different from last time.
Last time, he carried the curse of death left by Teron Gorefiend, always feeling a shadow in his heart.
This time, he didn’t have much time to stay in Booty Bay, so he chose the fastest ship he could find.
He didn’t need to waste time looking for an inn to stay, he would head straight to his destination when he arrived.
Apart from inquiring about the prices and availability of Essence of the Elements in the trade hall, he also needed to find the Goblin Alchemist to ask about Warlock Dethmoora Darkeye and her collection.
Eight days later, on a clear morning, Jesse arrived safely in Booty Bay. It was almost half a year since he last visited, back then it was early spring, now it was late autumn approaching winter. Booty Bay looked the same, still bustling, just the sea breeze felt slightly cooler than before.
Walking from the dock to the trade hall on the other side, passing by the human slums he had seen before, Jesse took a special look inside.
Many people were missing visibly, but if you look closely, you will notice a few people sitting next to a monk next to the monastery.
Perhaps the king couldn’t take everyone away all at once, so he could only guess like this.
You can ask again after finishing the matter.
Jesse had never thought that explaining to the people around the king and the Holy Light Church would solve all the difficulties of the refugees here all at once.
Arriving at the other end of the trade house, Jesse saw the trade ship moored at the freight dock behind the trade house, with the Steamwheedle Cartel’s gear flag fluttering on the ship in the sea breeze.
At this moment, a huge monster carrying a box taller than itself stepped onto the dock from above.
When he put the box on the ground and walked to the side, revealing his upper body, Jesse noticed that it was actually an Ogre.
Having heard many stories about Ogres wandering in Azeroth, especially after encountering Ogres personally in Duskwood, Jesse was almost subconsciously wary when he saw this creature that had come from Draenor to here. However, the Ogre just wiped his sweat, sat down, while a goblin on the ship kept swearing at him in a language Jesse couldn’t understand. The Ogre just nodded sadly and stood back up.
The goblin and the others on the dock completely ignored this, including the Tauren guard who had been standing next to the trade house owner.
That Ogre standing out among all other Ogres, looking nearly four meters tall, as he stepped back onto the merchant ship, it seemed like the whole ship gently swayed.
"You’ve never seen an Ogre before, human. One punch from that thing can mess up your face worse than crab sauce," a nearby goblin snickered. "Welcome to the trade house, are you here to inquire about the auction schedule or just looking to buy something random?"
"I have something in mind to purchase," Jesse shifted his gaze from the Ogre to the goblin standing on a crate. "I wonder if the trade house has Essence of Fire and Essence of Undeath for sale."
The goblin raised an eyebrow and asked, "Essence of Fire, yes. But the Essence of Undeath is gone, young sir. After the Orc War, the wealthy master Revilgaz made a deal with Kirin Tor and the Alliance, prohibiting the trading of certain spell materials widely used in Necromancy at the Booty Bay trade house, and unfortunately, the Essence of Undeath is one of them. But no worries, most of those sneaky Necromancers are penniless, ha!"
"Of course, I won’t report you just because you’re a Necromancer. The agreement doesn’t call for us to drive Necromancers out of Booty Bay!"
"I’m not a Necromancer," Jesse said.
"Then what’s the use?" the goblin asked.
Jesse explained, "My employer wants to use Essence of Undeath for experiments, to address the undead plague issue in Duskwood."
The goblin nodded and said, "Sounds quite intriguing, but unfortunately, I have no say in what gets sold here, not even with the trading post overseer Razilorth."
"What about the Essence of Fire?" Jesse said, even though he didn’t know the price or how it was packaged.
"Three gold coins and thirty silver coins per bottle, sir," the goblin said. "We have plenty of Essence of the Elements imported from Kalimdor here. The bottles come with elemental magic and transportation costs. If you use up the Essence of Fire inside, you could sell the bottle for over a gold coin in Dalaran. It’s really worth it."
Hearing the price, Jesse felt dizzy.
If Essence of Fire is selling at this price, he wondered what price the Essence of Undeath, which is not allowed to be sold here, could fetch.
Jesse bought some grilled prawns at the inn for lunch, then in the afternoon, he followed the previous route to the highest point in Booty Bay to find Bucks Miserheld.
He wondered how this guy had been faring in business over the past six months.
He had made various preparations, such as planning to run away to avoid taxes, or getting into trouble with Noggenfogger for modifying formulas and competing for customers, maybe even getting assassinated… or any other strange situations. But when he arrived, Miserheld was still lying in his chair, sunbathing, just like the first time Jesse visited, without any change.
"Mr. Miserheld," Jesse called out.
The goblin took off his glasses, looked over, exclaimed in surprise, and then said, "You’re not dead yet?"
"Why do I have to die?" Jesse asked.
"I thought a bold guy like you would end up dead in no time," the goblin chuckled.
"Bold guy? What did I do?" Jesse asked again.
"Oh, are you losing your memory?" the goblin walked over and tapped Jesse’s belt buckle, saying, "You did a good deed for Silvia, she told me all about it."
Hearing this, Jesse took a difficult breath and said, "Just forget about it, besides, I did it for your new formula, didn’t I?"
"I know, I understand! We have a saying, what happens in Booty Bay stays in Booty Bay, huh!" the goblin chuckled, "But here you are again."
"Let’s get to the point," Jesse said coldly.
"To the point, to the point!" the goblin chuckled, then his face turned serious, "You’re not here to ask for money, are you? My Miserheld elixir hasn’t been officially released yet, you don’t think trading a new medicine is that simple, do you?"
"Suit yourself, I didn’t expect much to begin with," Jesse said, "I’m not here for money, I have a few questions for you."
Miserheld let out a sigh and said, "Ask away, I love questions! Asking questions and answering them, I enjoy them all."
"Since you are an Alchemist…"
"The best Alchemist in the entire Booty Bay!"
"Well, the best Alchemist in the whole Booty Bay, do you know where I can buy Essence of Undeath?"
Hearing Jesse’s question, the goblin’s initially interested expression immediately turned serious.
"Since the Orc War, Booty Bay has banned the trade of Essence of Undeath, young man. Since you’re here asking me, you should be aware of this rule, right?"
Jesse nodded.
"So, are you not causing trouble for me?" the goblin asked.
"I won’t tell anyone about buying from you," Jesse said.
"Did I say I have any for sale?" grumbled the goblin, "I can’t trust you lot. Once the Kirin Tor catches you, you’ll spill everything. I still owe the Rivaga Order money, and if I get caught, there will be more fines!"
After a moment, he whispered, "But I do have some Dark Hearts of undead here. You can take some for yourself."
The goblin squinted, pointing with three fingers other than his index finger, "I sell them for thirty silver coins each. However much you can extract depends on your Alchemist friend’s skills. I deal in undead body parts, not Necromancy materials. Shouldn’t be a problem, right?"
"From what undead creature’s heart are these extracted?" Jesse asked.
"Well," the goblin pursed his lips, "Of course… from my test subjects. They come and go… can’t let the remaining parts go to waste, can I?"
"How much Essence of Undeath can be extracted?!" Jesse exclaimed, "Don’t deceive me. To extract Essence of Undeath, you must deal with powerful undead creatures. You’re no Necromancer. Aren’t your experiments on creatures like Gnolls?"
The goblin replied, "Other Necromancers also extract Essence of Undeath in a similar way… Be satisfied. At least, the hearts I offer you are carefully selected. They will surely yield a bit of essence."
After a moment of hesitation, Jesse asked, "You seem knowledgeable. Do you know where to acquire a large amount of Essence of Undeath?"
Miserheld stuck out his tongue and asked, "Are you planning to take on the challenge?"
"Tell me about it."
"Do you know about Karazhan’s ghosts? I have an honor product from Steamwheedle Cartel that can extract Essence of Undeath from the ghosts."
"Send me to Karazhan?! Impossible, that’s like a suicide mission, no, even worse than death itself."
"You don’t need to go into the tower of Karazhan, it’s far from there, just in that valley." Miserheld leaned closer and said, "The rewards will be great, young man…"
"Let me buy some undead hearts first," Jesse said. "Also, I have another question for you, about a warlock…"
