Chapter 466: Difficulty of Crafting
In the evening, Jesse wrote down the incantation of the Shadow Shield, the casting gestures, the necessary instructions, including the emotional requirements summarized with Molofeel – that is, to be as indifferent and even contemptuous as possible, all on a piece of paper.
The next day after lunch, Jesse arrived at The Slaughtered Lamb at the agreed time with Zardeth.
Right now, Jalane Ayrole and Zardeth haven’t arrived yet. Ursula is already here waiting.
Jesse remembered talking to Jalane about the robe before. Jalane wanted to go to Booty Bay to see if goblins were selling Essence of the Elements.
Ursula is here now, why not just ask her directly.
"Jesse," Ursula saw him coming into the hallway and called out with a smile.
"Ursula," Jesse said, "I was talking to Jalane about that Shadow Council robe… do you know about it?"
"Of course I do," Ursula said. "She was still thinking about the second robe before finishing the first one. Jesse, I have been preparing the dyes for that robe."
Jesse said, "I found out that the robe needs Essence of the Elements with fire and necrotic energy. Where can we get these things, any suggestions?"
"I know about fire," Ursula said. "In the depths of Burning Steppes, near Blackrock Mountain, there are many fire elementals. Jesse, the Dark Iron Dwarves should know more. If there’s a way to defeat those fire elementals and take their leftover flames, we might find alchemical materials to extract Essence of Fire from within."
"Of course, these are all written in books. I also want to get some Essence of Fire. I have a few recipes that require the essence of fire elementals… but going too deep into Blackrock Mountain is too dangerous, it’s a battlefield for Orcs and Dark Iron Dwarves…"
"And now there are even more black dragons," Jesse muttered quietly.
"Yes, black dragons," Ursula said. "That’s why I’ve been hesitant to send you."
"What about the Essence of Undeath?" Jesse asked.
"The Essence of Undeath…" Ursula raised an eyebrow. "I’ve only heard of it, never seen it. I do have the extraction method here, although it’s not difficult, but lacks the required ingredients."
"Ingredients?" Jesse asked. "What do you need, the brains of undead creatures? Or their hearts?"
"I think it’s the hearts," Ursula said. "While destroying a zombie’s head is said to stop them, according to the book, the dark power of death stored in the dark heart of undead creatures is much stronger."
"Duskwood has many undead," Jesse said. "Can we use the hearts of those undead?"
"If you want to use the Essence of Undeath," Ursula shook her head. "The dark power of those undead may not be suitable. This essence is extracted from undead creatures with their own will."
Now that the Scourge Legion has not invaded, where can we find so many undead creatures with their own will?
Jesse nodded, realizing that making this robe was much harder than he had imagined.
When he first saw Jalane Ayrole, he just wanted to get some clothes from her, as long as he didn’t have to go to Larson and risk getting into trouble again.
But when Zardeth told him about the Orc robe of the Shadow Council, his curiosity was piqued.
Thinking that this robe was meant for him, Jesse felt like he was not just making a robe, but finding something he had lost. He hoped that the power in this robe was worth the difficulty of making it.
Zardeth emerged from the passage followed by Sorrel, who appeared out of nowhere, and Jalane following behind.
"This is the spell of the Shadow Shield," Jesse said, handing the paper to Zardeth.
Zardeth glanced at the spell, softly recited it, then furrowed his brow.
"I already feel it’s quite challenging just by sensing it. Even reciting it, I can’t feel the power of shadows gathering. You show me how it’s done, Jesse."
After drinking a bit of Shadow Protection Potion to prevent harm from Shadow Power, they arrived at the practice room. Jesse warned the others, "This magic is very dangerous. If touched, it may release shadow damage attacking everything around. Erlan got hurt when we tried it before."
"Oh… that time." Ursula nodded and said, "I remember now. Erlan once complained that you used him as a target for Shadow Magic and he got hurt."
"What nonsense is that guy talking about…" Jesse sighed and said, "I didn’t know this magic could harm the attacker instead. I just wanted Erlan to test its protective nature."
"So, let me demonstrate first."
He recited the spell, found the right emotional feeling, and started to guide the Shadow Shield to unfold. Everyone saw a thin shadowy film floating around Jesse, widening their eyes in amazement.
Shadow is a corrosive energy, corroding the body, corroding the mind… Spells that use it to protect the caster are rarely known, and it was clear that Zardeth had never seen such magic before.
After all, this was Teron Gorefiend’s strange move.
Jesse still remembered when he used the Shadow Shield to block Vereesa’s Arcane shots in Dalaran, her unshakable look.
Then, his magic failed.
Jesse watched in disbelief as his magic, which he had mastered so well, especially after practicing with Greed many times and succeeding in the tense environment of Uldaman, flickered and failed. He shouldn’t have overthought things.
Indifferent.
Not knowing why, when he should have been clearing his mind and being indifferent to everything, he found himself thinking about Dalaran.
Jesse took a deep breath, glanced at the three people around him, and said, "Sorry, I was lost in thought."
This time, he tried his best to clear his mind, recalling the feeling of practicing the Shadow Shield with Molofeel before, and finally managed to maintain this magic for more than ten seconds.
Then he released the spell, making the Shadow Shield disappear, took a breath, and said, "That’s it, I still feel far from casting this Shadow Magic perfectly."
"It’s already quite surprising," Zardeth said, "This is the first time I’ve seen such a powerful shadow protection magic. Before, the shadow protection I knew was just a barrier specifically designed to resist Shadow Power."
"Let me give it a try next."
