Chapter 460: The Special Nature of Spells
By nightfall, everyone was tired, except for Jalane, who continued practicing after everyone else had achieved success. While she could gather the power of shadows this time, she still had some issues with releasing the energy in the final stage.
Even though she had achieved some success, she still couldn’t convince herself.
After a simple dinner in the basement, a few people chatted about what had happened in the basement while Jesse was away, including Surena summoning the incubus.
After dinner, Ursula went back to the Alchemy Room to continue organizing her potion bottles, Jalane started packing her things to go home, and Zardeth looked over and said, "Jesse, come with me. I have the notes that Gakin took for you."
In Zardeth’s room, Zardeth opened a cabinet and took out a stack of new papers, handing them to Jesse, saying, "These are the spell materials Erlan found at Gakin’s house. Some of them have been organized based on your Demonic materials, like the Curse of Recklessness, but most of them are untouched."
After taking the papers, Jesse received a few more from Zardeth, who explained, "These are the spells we have organized over the past few days. There’s one called Unending Breath that allows the exchange of gases using shadow power, preventing suffocation in most situations… There’s also Corrosion Spell, which has become more stable after being organized with Demonic techniques. Since you personally compiled the Demonic dictionary, do you only have one copy?"
"Yes," Jesse replied. "I’ve been thinking of leaving it here at The Slaughtered Lamb for everyone to access easily. In some time, I will organize and bind them together, adding a protective spell provided by Jalane to prevent damage from browsing."
"Alright."
Jesse added, "I created this dictionary to organize spells, so it would be even better if everyone could help."
Zardeth smiled and said, "After experiencing some setbacks, I feel like our group is finally getting back on track."
Jesse nodded and said, "Do you have any extra blank paper? I want to write a letter."
"Of course." Zardeth took a paper from a drawer under the table and handed it to Jesse, then said, "I have one more question, Jesse."
"That is the spell you told Gakin before, the Curse of Weakness, do you remember?"
"Of course I remember," Jesse said.
"That spell is not short," Zardeth said, "Ideally, by looking up the pronunciation in your dictionary, we should be able to find some clues. Some of the spells that Gakin found, we haven’t found every corresponding word, just at least one or two, but that Curse of Weakness…"
"Because that curse is not Demonic," Jesse said, "Sorrel should be able to notice that."
"She is not entirely confident in her Demonic skills," Zardeth asked, "Are you sure that is not Demonic?"
Jesse said, "Have you forgotten, I received this spell when I went to the western seaside, it should have been left by Naga… and Naga do not learn magic from demons, they have their own ways."
Hearing this, Zardeth looked serious and thought for a while before saying, "I thought that finding a Demonic dictionary would make it easy to translate all spells, it seems it’s not that simple, we can’t just communicate with Naga, can we?"
"My suggestion is to let go of that Curse of Weakness, Zardeth," Jesse said. "We can’t negotiate with the Naga, so let’s just use that curse for now since it works well and doesn’t cause any harm. We can think of ways to fix it later if there is another chance."
"So, what language is the Curse of Weakness in?" Zardeth asked. "Is it the Naga’s own language?"
The language used by the Naga is a variation of ancient elvish, similar to the language used in Quel’Thalas today. However, this curse is not in the Naga’s language but in the language of the Old God and its minions called Shath’Yar.
Seeing Zardeth still looking reluctant, Jesse said, "You must know about the Naga and the deity they worship, right?"
"I heard some things about them in Kul Tiran," Zardeth said.
"Then you must also know about the myths of the Naga and their sea god going mad," Jesse said.
"I’ve heard of those too," Zardeth said. "But in the spell book I found, there are many spells similar to the Curse of Weakness. Does that mean those spells are also in the Naga’s language?"
"Shadow Magic spells have many sources, Zardeth. Even demons use magic derived from those deities," Jesse said. "But we should only use them sparingly, not to become a group that worships ancient gods like a bunch of demons and Orcs. If the magic works, we can try it, if not, we should abandon it and not delve further."
Zardeth said, "I’m always cautious about these matters, Jesse. I just wanted to ask you about the peculiarities of that spell."
He started packing his bag and said, "I remember you also live by the canal, right? Why don’t we go back together?"
"No," Jesse said. "My goals are too big right now. Being with you might cause unnecessary trouble, and it’s already very dangerous."
Zardeth smiled and said, "Don’t worry, Jesse. I have friends in many places. If The Slaughtered Lamb attracts unwanted attention, I will know immediately and inform everyone quickly. I can also find out why it drew attention. I didn’t randomly choose to search for a place with Gakin and Jarel Moor in the Mage Quarter and gather this group of people."
"I know, thank you for your efforts, Zardeth. But I have something to do in the Mage Quarter tomorrow," Jesse said.
"Then I’ll leave first," Zardeth nodded and said. "See you later."
In the hall, watching the back of the man with black hair leaving, Jesse still couldn’t shake off his worries.
Although Zardeth seemed much calmer and more rational than Gakin, his constant contact with warlocks from different places made it uncertain whether he might run into worshippers of those Old Gods.
It is clear that the influence of the Old Gods has taken root among the Dark Iron Dwarves. The Firelord Ragnaros summoned by the Dark Iron Emperor Thaurissan himself was once a servant of those ancient gods.
Jesse couldn’t control the Dark Iron Dwarves, but if there were elements within this warlock group leaning towards the Old Gods and their servants, he had to eliminate them.
