Chapter 459: The Power of Emotions
Zardeth was quite confident, and for good reason. Jesse noticed that when he approached everyone, the power of shadows had already followed him and spread little by little.
He was already trying to adjust his emotions… and quite intensely.
Zardeth said something smart. He already noticed how emotions affect dark magic, but he couldn’t convince himself of the connection before.
So when Jesse proved that this method really works, he quickly found back the feelings he once abandoned.
Zardeth skillfully cast a spell. At first, he didn’t use a magic wand, instead he tried to gather the power of shadows with his hands. Unfortunately, this way was much harder than he imagined.
After a few tries, he had to pick up his staff that was standing nearby, copying Jesse’s gestures and trying again…
The first attempt guided by Jesse was very successful, but Zardeth couldn’t shoot out the Shadow Bolt smoothly. However, the second time, he successfully completed the entire magic. When the Shadow Bolt hit the wall, it wasn’t as powerful as Jesse’s, but it was still strong enough.
Zardeth looked at the spreading Dark Energy, smiled, and said, "You are right, Jesse. Once you understand the trick with emotions, everything changes. I think those dwarves also know this, but they are not willing to share any tips with us, those guys…"
"Maybe they are also unsure and just go by their instincts," Jesse said. "I met a Dwarf Warlock once, he thought he was very strong, but in reality, he was just average."
"That’s only because he crossed paths with you," Zardeth said with a smile.
He continued, "I wanted to try guiding energy without relying on a magic wand, but it was simply a waste of time. Shadow Bolt may seem simple, but it’s all about being well-prepared before casting it."
"I think I need a dark magic wand to help with casting spells too, Zardeth," Ursula said.
Zardeth nodded and said, "The Orc Warlock left many magic wands in this world, Ursula. Don’t worry, I will help you find one suitable for casting Shadow Magic soon. Surena and Erlan don’t have their own magic wands either, and I have been working on this. "
"Controlling your emotions… sounds interesting," Jalane Ayrole whispered. "I want to try the next one, Zardeth."
"Please, Jalane Ayrole," Zardeth said, stepping aside.
Jalane unwrapped the cloth from her magic wand, revealing a small and delicate shadow stone inside.
She approached the others, glanced briefly at Jesse, then closed her eyes, as if remembering everything Jesse had done as if revising them in her mind.
Next, she carefully raised her magic wand, tried to recite a spell, but the effect was not good. Although she tried hard to gather the power of shadow to the tip of the wand with her hand, despite the constant influx of shadow power guided by the spell, she could not form a strong energy mass.
Jalane tried for a while, but in the end, she just sighed, tired.
"Being too impatient is not good," Jesse said.
"You’re right," Jalane said. "I need to be patient like guiding a needle through fabric when learning magic in Alterac. My teacher pointed out my mistakes back then."
"Everyone has their strengths," Zardeth said. "Here, you can relax a bit, Jalane. There are no exams or strict goals. See us as family and friends, not your boss or teacher."
"I understand, thank you, Zardeth," Jalane nodded. "Maybe I need some time to readjust. I feel like I still have a long way to go to succeed."
"Then it’s just me left," Ursula said. "If I try to calm myself down as Sorrel mentioned, feeling sad and down… then chant a spell, guide the power of shadows on the magic wand with gestures, is that enough? Can I try your magic wand, Jesse?"
Jesse handed her the magic wand, saying, "Of course."
Ursula walked up to the group with Gorefiend’s magic wand, facing the wall on the other side.
She glanced over this side, then at the magic wand in her hand. Jesse could tell she suddenly seemed to feel down.
Alchemist stared at the wall, calm for a while, brewing something, then began chanting the spell.
They had practiced this spell a few times before, so Ursula was quite proficient with the chant. Her delicate fingers guided on the gem of Gorefiend, gathering the power of shadows swiftly, even more smoothly than Zardeth.
According to today’s standards, Ursula is like a half-elf, maybe born with some magical advantages, even though her elf heritage is almost negligible. She’s more like a human with elf ancestors than a half-elf, so can she really surpass Zardeth with this racial advantage?
Jesse was very doubtful.
Maybe it’s because of the magic wand, but…
Is it because of her emotions? What is she thinking about now? What memories is Ursula recalling to find this emotion?
She mentioned that her father died early, and after that, she left the Kingdom of Lordaeron and came to Stormwind.
Yes, in this aspect, she would be much more adept at using magic by gathering it.
After several attempts, Ursula drank a Mana Potion and then successfully shot the shadow orb she had gathered at the wall.
It seems that for her, releasing the shadow orb is much more difficult than gathering it, but it’s just a matter of experience – after all, she rarely casts spells.
"I did it… Jesse," Ursula said, looking at the black wave created by the impact of the shadow on the wall. By now, her forehead was covered in sweat.
Jesse even felt that her Shadow Bolt was indeed stronger than Zardeth’s, and Zardeth noticed it too, which made him gasp in surprise.
Ursula took the towel Jesse handed her and wiped her neck, saying, "I’m tired, Jesse, but… I feel accomplished. I can’t wait for Surena to come back and see the new skills I’ve learned."
She glanced at the spot hit by her Shadow Bolt and couldn’t help but smile.
Jalane Ayrole stood aside, with a worried look on her face.
Jesse could tell that Jalane must be thinking that even Ursula Deline, considered the least talented here, had succeeded. As an enchantress who had studied magic and a robe tailor, she shouldn’t do worse.
Understanding the spell all of a sudden and having three members master it in an afternoon, Zardeth was clearly excited.
He looked at the new members and said, "When Erlan and Surena come back, we’ll teach them too. Don’t worry for now, Jalane. It’s foreseeable that for those two, releasing Shadow Bolt with negative emotions won’t be easy."
