Chapter 456: The Most Professional Demon Hunter
"Yes, master." Sorrel responded lightly as she walked into the room, Jesse watched her back and said, "She follows your orders very well."
"Succubi can indeed be very obedient," Zardeth said. "So I don’t understand what Gakin did. He is supposed to be more ruthless towards demons. Since he has already subdued those two succubi, why did something like that happen again, it’s really frustrating."
"In addition to the spells I mentioned earlier, there is one that we have compiled but have not successfully tested." Zardeth took the paper handed by Sorrel, flipped through it, and handed one of them to Jesse, saying, "It’s this one. It has phonetic annotations in both Demonic and common languages."
Jesse looked at the Demonic annotations on it and said, "This time I also brought back a spell that everyone can learn together. I studied it myself and felt it was difficult to make any further breakthroughs."
"What?" Zardeth said. "You have already learned it, but you think there is room for improvement?"
"Yes," Jesse said. "It’s a shield woven from shadows. I think casting it may be related to controlling one’s emotions. Once you find that casting feeling… it can take the spell to the next level."
Zardeth nodded slowly and then said, "This is a conjecture I have never dared to confirm. Jesse Seso, can you really use… control your emotions to affect the magic’s effectiveness?"
"It’s quite evident in some difficult spells," Jesse said.
Zardeth said, "Great, I can sometimes feel something, but it’s hard to tell the difference. Maybe it’s because the magic I use is quite simple."
"Let’s talk more about it when we get to The Slaughtered Lamb," Jesse said, looking at the spell in his hand. "This spell… I can feel that it’s very powerful."
"Are you saying we should spend more money to hire someone to test it?" Zardeth asked.
"I think we shouldn’t hire anyone else, it could be dangerous. Let’s start with an animal," Jesse suggested.
Zardeth said, "I’ll talk to Jarel tomorrow, ask him to bring a lamb."
Jesse nodded and said, "One more thing, I want to know if you have Gakin’s spell records. Do you have them with you?"
"Of course," Zardeth replied. "Do you want to take a look? I haven’t had the chance to copy them yet, but once Sorrel helps me make a copy, I’ll give them to you. There are some parts of Gakin’s materials that I haven’t figured out yet."
"Is Sorrel willing to help you copy things?" Jesse asked.
"Is Ms. Molofeel not willing to help?" Zardeth asked in return.
Jesse immediately said, "I, um, I’ve never asked… but, why won’t your little creature help you?"
"Creature?" Zardeth chuckled and said, "My little creature doesn’t have much strength to write many words. It’s not as efficient as a succubus. Though it understands Demonic, its skills are far inferior to Sorrel’s. Her appearance has truly helped me a lot, thanks to you, Jesse. Of course, we must not forget Gakin’s sacrifice."
Jesse nodded and said, "Speaking of Gakin and succubus… I have something else to ask you, Zardeth, about Mor’zul."
Zardeth sighed, leaning back in his chair, and said, "I knew you couldn’t avoid mentioning that person eventually. Well, he hasn’t really done anything to harm us. Go ahead. But don’t ask me where he is. I have no idea and no interest in finding out."
"It’s not about Mor’zul himself," Jesse said. "I heard Mor’zul used to know a female warlock… I want to know more about her."
Zardeth glanced meaningfully in her direction and said, "You mean Dethmoora Darkeye."
"You know her name?" Jesse asked.
Zardeth smiled and said, "Would you call it knowing? Just like Mor’zul, it sounds like a name made up to become a master of shadows. Dethmoora Darkeye was quite famous in the old warlock circles, I mean, among those practicing dark magic before the Dark Portal opened, in places like Shadowforge City, Stratholme, Dalaran, Stromgarde…"
"Is she a human?" Jesse asked.
"I really don’t know," Zardeth said. "Dwarves, humans, elves, and even trolls could be, maybe even a demon. She has many legends and writings about demonology. I know Mor’zul claims to have seen her, but I don’t know if it’s true or not, maybe just his imagination."
"If he hasn’t seen that female warlock, where do you think Mor’zul got all that demon knowledge from?" Jesse asked.
Zardeth looked at Jesse and said, "It’s hard to say, but you’re not the first one wanting to find Dethmoora’s warlock, Jesse. Gakin also tried to figure it out, maybe even Mor’zul himself wants to know."
With that, he chuckled.
"You mentioned earlier that Dethmoora left a lot of books, right?" Jesse asked.
"Yes."
"Were any of them written by her?"
"Written by her?" Zardeth furrowed his brows and thought for a moment, mumbling Dethmoora’s name under his breath. After a while, he simply said, "Maybe Mor’zul does have some, but now let me think… perhaps you can ask some ancient scroll collectors, especially those who are willing to collect Shadow Magic related items, like some Goblin Magnates."
Goblin Magnates?
Whenever Jesse thought of Goblin Magnate, he immediately remembered Goblin Alchemist Bucks Miserheld. Even though Bucks Miserheld was more of a miser, Jesse had to admit he had a wide network within the Steamwheedle Cartel. Acquainted with the head of a risk investment company and the mayor of Gadgetzan, he might be able to gather relevant information.
Jesse was thinking that if he could get a book handwritten by Dethmoora Darkeye, or at least something she had touched, he might be able to use the "Sympathy" mentioned by Reliquary to sense Dethmoora’s magical trace and find clues she left behind.
However, a trip to Booty Bay was still necessary.
Jesse decided to carefully consider his plan. During this time, he planned to learn a few necessary spells from Zardeth. Jesse felt that the process of finding Dethmoora Darkeye might encounter more and more troubles.
Not to mention preparing to help Mor’zul summon that demon next. It’s hard to say which is more difficult, succeeding or failing without getting caught.
In addition, contacting Reliquary would require Vereesa’s help. He could start by writing a letter to inquire if any members of Reliquary were nearby. Having an introduction letter from a member of the Windrunner Family should make the conversation easier.
"By the way, I haven’t asked yet, have you met Jalane Ayrole?" Zardeth inquired.
"She has joined our Dagger Association. I’m sorry that you weren’t present when we invited her to join, but you are never here…"
"I have met her," Jesse said. "It should be me apologizing for not being there when she came to us, Zardeth. I can tell she is talented, and Ursula mentioned she is already preparing her first robe."
"Yes, she’s getting ready, and so are we," Zardeth said. "You took part in the battle at the Dark Portal, so you know how many demon bodies were left in that burnt place. Not only there, but also in the Black Morass, demons are everywhere. The Alliance is unable to clean up so many demon corpses, and their bodies don’t decay quickly. Now is a good time to gather demon remains for spell materials and robe ingredients, Jesse. If you’re lucky, you might even find things left behind by powerful Eredar demons. Of course, you can’t expect too much, as I know that the Wizard’s Sanctum and Dalaran are also searching."
"Anyway, Erlan, Surena, and their few hunter friends have already set off, they might bring some back soon. By the way, are you interested in going with them to make some money? They are heading east from Lakeshire into the Black Morass."
"Of course," Jesse nodded. "Is there good profit in it?"
Zardeth said, "You’re skilled, Jesse, and you have quite a rich experience in dealing with demons, you could even say… very rich. I will have Erlan negotiate a good price for you. However, I know that you are officially sacrificed at the Dark Portal frontline, so you need a new name, have you considered it?"
"Jurke," Jesse replied, trying to mimic Greed’s accent.
Zardeth couldn’t help but laugh, "Good name."
