Chapter 452: Eventually Parting Ways
On the way back, Henny seemed to realize something and didn’t drag Jesse to wander around the market or anywhere else anymore.
The two walked in silence, Jesse wanted to say something to reassure his mother, but he couldn’t find the right words.
Upon arriving home, his mother immediately started preparing dinner, waiting for his father to return.
At the dinner table, Jesse talked to his parents about Nethergarde and Stonard, about the demons they encountered on the battlefield, about the different people he met there. His father was touched and shared many stories from before the Orc War, when they were on the border dealing with Stromgarde cavalry.
At that time, the Kingdom of Lordaeron and Stromgarde had a strained relationship, with friction at the border. But after the Dark Portal, everything changed. Even the red-clothed cavalrymen, who once seemed threatening, now appeared friendly and kind.
At night, Jesse lay in bed for a long time without falling asleep, sensing a light from inside. His mother knocked on the door softly and asked, "Jesse, are you still awake?"
"I’m fine, Mom."
"Can I come in?"
"Of course."
Jesse sat up as his mother walked in with a candlestick and placed it on the table. She sat on the edge of the bed and asked, "The one who came to see you during the day, he was a mage, right?"
"You saw him," Jesse replied.
Henny nodded and sighed, "They don’t want you to go back home."
Jesse said, "Yes, it will be troublesome once someone knows I am still alive."
Henny opened her mouth as if she wanted to speak, but hesitated.
She seemed to hesitate for a while, but couldn’t resist asking in the end, "There is one thing I don’t understand, Jesse, about the elven messenger… He did not clearly explain to us why, after you healed the injury, you had to be declared dead on the battlefield. I asked your father about it, but he didn’t know either. I thought he was going to ask you at the dinner table, but in the end, he didn’t bring it up."
In fact, Jesse almost knew why his father did not want to ask him this question; as a captain of the guards of Lordaeron, he might have heard some rumors already.
He looked at his mother, considering whether to speak or not.
What good does it do to keep hiding it?
Henny was not a fool.
Furthermore, he might not be able to return to the royal city for a long time, just as Bethor Iceshard said.
It’s better to tell his mother instead of letting her guess and worry unnecessarily.
"To defeat the evil demon commander, I used some not very nice methods, and many people saw it." He whispered, "They are saying those things to protect me and you all."
"I almost understand, son," Henny nodded.
Jesse lay down and said, "Mom, tell me a story, please."
Henny smiled and leaned against the headboard, saying, "Then let me continue the story about the cunning pirates of Treacherous Cove. Last time, we left off with Grego Ackuston facing a group of Naga Sethrak…"
"Yes!" Jesse opened his eyes and said, "Those Naga can even speak a common language!"
"You actually remembered that," Henny patted Jesse’s head and said, "They speak a common language, so they directly demanded Mr. Ackuston to hand over all his treasures to their queen…"
Though Henny’s storytelling was still as captivating as it used to be when he was young, as if the events were real, Jesse unknowingly fell asleep quickly, feeling safe and peaceful.
In the following days, Jesse helped his parents repair many things in the house that were not working well, tidied up a warehouse that hadn’t been cleaned in years, and considering Bethor Iceshard’s warning, he didn’t go out with his parents again.
But, he still had to leave somehow.
He also knew that the longer he stayed at home, the harder it would be to leave.
One morning, Jesse packed his things, put on his cloak, and his father handed him the Menethil royal sword hanging on the wall, saying, "Take this with you, Jesse."
Jesse replied, "Well, you keep it. This sword was a gift from the king to you, not to me, besides my own grave has been prepared."
Vickers shook his head, "I have my own weapon, Jesse, and it suits me just fine. Take this sword for your protection."
"I have my own sword too." Jesse patted his cloak and said, "Maybe you haven’t seen it in my room these past few days, but trust me, it’s just as good. I know you like this sword, so you keep it!"
"And I am a mage, what do I need with two swords… right, Dad?"
Vickers chuckled and said, "Even mages may run out of time to cast spells, but since you insist, I’ll consider it a gift you are giving me."
Jesse nodded, then looked at his mother. Henny seemed upset, but to avoid making her son sad, she stayed silent.
"Mom, I actually have something to give you."
"Ah? What."
Henny obviously did not expect.
Jesse took out the dragon tooth dagger from his pocket and said, "Look at this."
"This is… a dagger?" Henny’s eyes lit up, then shook his head and said, "You’ve outgrown that wild and crazy age, now with Vickers by your side… you don’t need this anymore, Jesse."
"But you still like these little toys, don’t you?" Jesse said, "And most importantly, look, guess what this is made of?"
"It looks like some kind of beast’s tooth." Henny took the knife, turned it in his hand and said, "Very light, son, and beautifully made, but I can’t figure out exactly what it is, is it a Highland Raptor’s claw?"
"This is a black dragon’s tooth, Mom," Jesse said, "And it’s a black dragon that I personally killed."
Upon hearing this, Henny was stunned, and Vickers’ face changed as he asked, "You… killed a black dragon?"
Perhaps the concept of a demon commander was still somewhat unreal for a guard captain living in the distant north, but a black dragon… was no longer such an unimaginable creature for the people of Lordaeron.
"Even though I’m just a young dragon, and with others," Jesse said, "Don’t worry, Dad. The fang of this black dragon definitely has no poison left. I can assure you."
He held his mother’s hand, which was holding a dagger, and whispered, "If old Vickers bullies you, you use this to defend yourself."
The mother burst out laughing, then nodded, while the father chuckled beside her and lightly tapped Jesse’s head, saying, "How come you’re on your mom’s side now?"
"Of course… But, you’re not worried about my safety outside now, are you?" Jesse whispered, hugging his mother. "Even if it’s a black dragon, it can’t harm me. Whoever wants to fight me puts their life at risk, but here I am, safe and sound. I’m not bragging. Also, Mom, Dad, I’ll definitely come back for you."
