Chapter 451: The Reminder of Kirin Tor
Early the next day, Jesse accompanied his mother to the grand cathedral to pray to the Holy Light. The square was crowded with people, and the cathedral’s door was constantly filled with people coming in and out, with many priests having to maintain order here.
This old grand cathedral was said to be even older than Lordaeron itself, and from the front, it looked like a towering light-colored monument.
The interior of the cathedral was much cooler than the outside. A bishop dressed modestly but of high status stood in the corridor at the entrance, reciting blessings to every citizen and traveler entering the cathedral.
Jesse didn’t know if others could see the shadow power within him, but when it was Jesse’s turn to approach the bishop with the crowd, the bishop still bestowed the blessings of the Holy Light upon him, no different from others.
Walking over to a row of benches, Jesse leaned in to his mother’s ear and said, "Mom, I won’t go with you to the front."
"Why?" Henny asked, tilting her head to the side. "We finally came here, and you are not going to pray to the Holy Light with me…"
"But many people here know me," Jesse sighed and said, "I’m taller and thinner than before, with this messy hair covering me a bit. They might not realize it’s me. But if I stand next to you, it’ll be easy to recognize me."
Henny nodded and said, "Then sit behind me and pray together? The Holy Light will understand you, Jesse."
"The Holy Light always understands me, Mom," Jesse replied.
Henny continued to move forward with the crowd, while Jesse sat in an empty seat, watching his mother looking back at him every few steps, smiling occasionally. He smiled back.
Looking up at the grand cathedral with its dome resembling the night sky, adorned with intricate stone pillars, sculptures of warriors holding swords watching over the people in the center, golden chandeliers, and dazzling stained glass windows under the sunlight…
"Hello, Mr. Seso."
Hearing the greeting, Jesse lowered his head and saw a middle-aged nobleman standing next to him. Jesse noticed the man wearing various rings, some from Kirin Tor, some from Lordaeron’s archmage, and some with emblems Jesse didn’t recognize.
"Hello, sir," Jesse said.
"I’m Bethor Iceshard," the man introduced himself, reaching out his hand. "I’m a member of Kirin Tor and also the magic advisor to the royal family of Lordaeron."
"I have heard of your name, Master," Jesse stood up and shook his hand.
"Have you heard of me?" Bethor Iceshard said with a smile, "It’s quite unexpected."
Jesse knew his name, but not from this world, but from his past life.
Bethor Iceshard later died from the scourge, was resurrected as a powerful undead mage by the Death Knight, but regained his will after the Lich King and the Icecrown Citadel were severely damaged, and thus joined the Forsaken ruled by the Dark Lady Sylvanas, becoming the leader of the Undercity of Lordaeron, which later became known as the Magic Quarter of the Undercity.
Of course, the reason he could be valued by the Scourge and Forsaken was that he was a senior member of the Kirin Tor in his lifetime.
"I must tell you, just now in the square, I was betting in my heart whether you would be willing to enter the cathedral. I was even curious to see what would happen if you entered the cathedral…" Eszhade glanced at the chair beside him and said, "Please sit down, Mr. Seso."
Jesse nodded and sat down, while Bethor Iceshard straightened his clothes and sat on the side, then said, "I am also curious if you would be harmed by the Holy Light if you entered this cathedral."
"Would that really be a concern?" Jesse asked.
Eszhade shook his head and said, "I think even members of the Kirin Tor have some strange superstitions, such as almost all of those secretly studying Shadow Magic, even those unforgivable criminals trying to research Necromancy… they never set foot in any sanctuary, so I occasionally pay attention, to see if they really go in, what reaction the Holy Light would have."
"But you came in just like that, completely open and without any hesitation… and Holy Light didn’t do anything to you at all, which resolved a long-standing question for me."
"Or maybe you’re just a special case." Eszhad smiled and said, "I think if you’re in trouble here, it must be because of an issue with the Holy Light."
Jesse smiled a little but didn’t say anything.
"Of course, I didn’t come here just to chat." The smile faded from the mage’s face, and he continued, "When you entered the royal city, the Kirin Tor took notice of you, Mr. Seso. Frankly, we didn’t want you to appear here so openly. Too many people in the royal city know you, not to mention that the last place you should be is at the Seso’s household."
"I’m sorry, but I have to come back," Jesse said.
Eszhad said, "General Sylvanas Windrunner has already sent messengers to explain the situation to your parents. I believe Ms. Vereesa must have told you this, so you really don’t need to come back specially."
"Of course, I understand your feelings, but… you should also understand the difficulties faced by the Kirin Tor. Informing the entire Alliance that you killed a Pit Lord with a fire meteor is manageable, but rumors of you using Shadow Magic to execute that demon king will spread quickly once the soldiers supporting Nethergarde return home, and it will soon overshadow our version completely."
"But as long as you remain dead, in a few years everyone will have completely forgotten about this. Everything will be under control. So we don’t want you to come back to life. Even the rumor of you coming back to life is unacceptable, because those rumors are like wildfire, they will ignite the previous rumor of Shadow Magic, causing panic… You are a warlock, I believe you understand fear the most."
"The Kirin Tor doesn’t blame you for wanting to see your parents, so they sent me to further communicate with you. I think Archmage Malin may not have been clear about some things due to the bond between you as teacher and student."
"Of course, I can’t speak too bluntly, but I’ll do my best to convey the Kirin Tor’s message. I really admire your bravery at Nethergarde, this is not just polite words, it’s from my heart."
"Thank you for the reminder, Master." Jesse paused for a moment and asked, "So I need to leave the royal city immediately, right?"
Es shard looked at Jesse, tilted his head in distress, then said, "As I mentioned, Kirin Tor doesn’t want to blame you for returning here to see your parents. You can stay here for a few days, just avoid going out and attracting attention. But after that, try not to come back."
He glanced at the front of the church and said, "Well, I won’t disturb your time with your mother’s service, Mr. Jesse Seso. Despite what was said earlier, you are still welcome back to Lordaeron, I hope you enjoy your time here."
After speaking, Bethor Iceshard quickly got up and squeezed into the crowd, leaving Jesse alone on the bench, quietly sighing.
