Chapter 447: The Border of Three Kingdoms
The convoy left Cinderstone Village and headed north, bypassing a shimmering mist-covered Cinderstone Lake. By evening, Jesse could see a huge dark shadow up ahead.
The big shadow made Jesse feel a bit uncomfortable. He couldn’t remember how this place looked like when he passed by three years ago.
As the caravan approached, he confirmed that it was Greymane Wall.
The Greymane Wall located at the southern end of Silverpine in the game was already quite impressive, but this one was even more exaggerated. When he arrived at the wall, he had to crane his neck to see the top where the battlements and towers were blurry, making it uncomfortable.
At least the person who supported leaving the alliance last night was right, this wall was indeed much more spectacular than the walls at Nethergarde.
Jesse thought to himself, King Genn’s money must have all gone into building this incredible sight.
However, beyond this wall, there was still a large expanse of Gilneas territory, including Shadowfang Keep, which was still called Pyrewood Village at the time, as well as Ambermill town near Dalaran to the east.
To be honest, that territory had already entered the heartland of the Lordaeron continent, Silverpine. And this wall happened to separate Lordaeron continent and Gilneas Peninsula at the narrowest point. Building the wall here was much more cost-effective than enclosing the entire Gilneas border.
The wall was not fully built yet, with tall scaffolds everywhere, cargo wagons transporting materials, huge stones, busy workers back and forth… Tents stretching out in rows, and even completed wooden and stone houses. It turned this construction camp at the city wall into another small town, not much smaller than Lakeshire.
Resting under the wall overnight, Jesse set off again the next morning, leaving Greymane Wall and continuing northeast, crossing a vast swamp, following the Pyrewood River flowing towards Gilneas Bay. By afternoon, they bypassed a forest and finally saw the town of Ambermill on the riverbank in the distance.
Just like Emberstone Town, Ambermill also started off as a town that grew because of its resources, but instead of minerals, it was wood.
Being on the border of Gilneas, to the north lay the powerful Kingdom of Lordaeron. To defend against attacks from the Lordaeron army, Gilneas built many watchtowers and walls around this logging town, hoping it could take on some of the fortress duties, supporting each other with the fort of Caer Darrow to the west of the forest.
However, this town was actually influenced much more by Dalaran than by Lordaeron. Many Dalaran mages hoping to study the herbs and magic of Silverpine reside here. Along the road to Ambermill, carriages can be seen with purple-robed mages riding in and out of town on horseback or on foot.
Everywhere you look are Dalaran mages carrying long staves. The entrance watchtowers still fly Gilneas’s black anchor flag, rather than The Violet Eye. Many Lordaeron people assume that Ambermill belongs to Dalaran. Jesse, for example, wouldn’t have known this was a border town of Gilneas if he hadn’t come across information on the borders and history from Malin’s bookshelf while he was bored and flipping through books.
Perhaps it’s because Dalaran, in its two-thousand-year history, has never really built a proper army or invaded other countries or shown any intention or actions of annexing land, that Gilneas doesn’t pay much attention to Dalaran’s influence.
The wealthy mages also boosted the town’s economy, turning a literal logging camp into what is now a bustling trading post at the border of the three nations, albeit not very large in size.
So, the kings of Gilneas also turned a blind eye, since this town was, after all, paying taxes to Gilneas.
However, after the scourge in the game, the Kingdom of Lordaeron fell, Dalaran City destroyed by the defiler Archimonde, and the entire Silverpine quickly corrupted under the spread of the plague, King Genn decisively closed the Greymane Wall to isolate the effects of the scourge, effectively abandoning this town.
Thus, after the scourge was subdued, the Kirin Tor naturally took over here, turning this into the frontline against the Forsaken undead that occupied the ruins of Lordaeron. Of course, by then, Ambermill was no longer as lively as it used to be.
The caravan stopped at Ambermill, and Jesse took out the letter Ursula had given him, double-checking the address written on it.
Near the town hall was the Alchemy Room… Eldred’s Alchemy Room.
Jesse wandered around the town center next to the tower, and after asking a mage, he finally found Eldred’s alchemy materials shop in an alley.
"Is it Mr. Eldred?" Jesse asked the person behind the counter as he entered.
"Yes, it’s me." Eldred looked to be around forty years old.
"I have a letter for you." Jesse placed Ursula’s letter on the table.
"Did she really hire a mage just to deliver a letter?" Eldred asked curiously.
Jesse didn’t say anything, just nodded and left the Alchemy Room.
Eldred seemed familiar with Ursula, so Jesse used Detect Demon to check the seemingly ordinary shop but didn’t find any demons.
However, no matter what, he always felt that things were not as simple here, perhaps he should go back and ask Ursula for some advice.
Ambermill not only had many mages, even the food and drinks sold in the inn were very similar to Dalaran. It could be said that if it weren’t for the flags of Gilneas hanging everywhere, it would really be a small town of Dalaran. It’s no wonder people from Lordaeron mistakenly think of this place as Dalaran.
After eating and drinking, Molofeel came to his reserved room at night and leaned against the window, looking outside. He said, "The Alchemy Room the master visited today… the smell doesn’t seem quite right."
"There’s a smell of demons!" Saenor said. "I also smell the scent of demons!"
"At least it’s the body parts of demons," Molofeel said. "That place might be a trading post for demon materials."
"But there are no demons inside," Jesse said. "Anyway, it’s none of our business. I just want to return to Lordaeron quickly to see my parents. I don’t want to deal with anything else on this journey. So, you two, don’t cause trouble for me…"
"Can I meet the master’s parents?" the succubus said softly, with a slightly teasing smile.
"I think you’re completely crazy," Jesse said quietly. "When we reach the royal city, I will book a room for both of you at an inn, and you will stay there… Alright, the royal city, let me think, maybe I will need to go to Brill to find a place for you to stay."
"Wherever you end up staying, just behave yourselves. If any of you dare to let the humans there notice your presence…"
"I promise!" Saenor quickly said.
"The happy days are almost over," Molofeel said sadly, leaning towards Jesse and saying eagerly, "That night I used up so much of my magic power, it still hasn’t fully recovered. Master, I urgently need your help."
Jesse pushed her aside, saying, "Forget it, do you know that Dalaran was once invaded by your Sayaad kin? Bringing you into this town is already dangerous enough. This is not like being on a ship or in Southshore, you must not cause trouble when surrounded by mages in the future."
