Chapter 044: Young Mother
The next day, Jesse was awoken by the chirping of birds, and as he sat up, he found himself lying on an extravagant large bed.
Of course, by "extravagant," it was only compared to the beds he had slept in before.
Looking out the window, he realized he was at Great Lake Farm, and the bandages on his wounds had been changed carefully, with no more bloodstains on them.
Recalling last night, it seemed like he had been bitten quite severely.
As he tried to get out of bed, he suddenly felt sore all over, with a dull ache in his ankles and wrists. He stumbled and almost fell at the edge of the table, barely managing to grab onto it and prevent himself from falling.
"Greed?" he called out, but no one answered.
Judging by the direction of the sunlight, it was just past noon.
He peeked out of the window and saw a woman sitting on the steps outside the farm holding a sleeping girl in her arms. A few young people were busy by the granary, and an old lady stood nearby watching them without moving.
The girl didn’t seem to be hurt, and yesterday Jesse and Greed were too tired to carefully check her condition.
After a while, the girl’s mother looked up and seemed to notice Jesse looking out from the window.
She rushed into the house, took the girl into another room, and when she came out, she caught Jesse trying to hold onto the table to stand up.
"Sir!" the girl’s mother held him and said, "You better not get up yet. I’m Amy Lee Foller, the wife of the man you saw yesterday. You saved our daughter."
"I remember you." Jesse felt a bit dizzy, and the woman quickly helped him back to bed.
He looked around, by the window, and saw his walking stick and bag on the cabinet below the window, finally putting his mind at ease.
"What about the dwarf?" Jesse asked. "How is he doing?"
The woman said, "The dwarf has some minor bites on his legs, but he is strong and should recover in a few days."
Jesse remembered the scene from last night when Greed was surrounded by several old wolves, it seemed like he still had some strength left.
However, Greed always wore leather wrist guards and boots when going out, no matter how hot the weather was. This was important protection to avoid injuries when dealing with wild animals, it might have played a crucial role.
Jesse looked at the bright sky outside and remembered he had promised to go to work this morning.
It was already late, but he couldn’t stay here for too long.
Before leaving, there was one more thing to do – that scroll. The scroll written in Orcish language kept intriguing him despite all the chaotic adventures he went through.
"Please stop a carriage for me, Lady Furel." Jesse said, "The faster, the better. I need to hurry back to Stormwind, just give the payment to that dwarf, I have urgent matters to attend to."
"Are you sure it’s okay?" Lady Furel worriedly said, "And we haven’t had a chance to thank you properly yet. Matt rounded up some workers from nearby farms this morning and found some wolf carcasses. They’re preparing a wolf meat feast, and they’re currently skinning the wolves… Some of the wolf skins are intact and can be sold for some money or used to make winter clothes. This is all a token of gratitude for you."
Hearing about the wolf meat, Jesse’s stomach grumbled and he couldn’t help but swallow saliva.
Besides the wolf fur jackets to take, feeling sore all over, he probably couldn’t move a step further and decided to lie down for a while first.
He tilted his head, relaxed, and said, "I want to eat some fruit. Do you have any fruit to eat? Anything is fine."
"Ah…" Amy nodded and ran into another room, then hurried back holding a wooden plate.
"Here are grapes from Northshire Abbey. I don’t know if you…"
Jesse picked a grape from the wooden plate and put it in his mouth. Wow, it was so sour that it made his teeth ache, but there was a hint of sweetness and a little scent of wine. It seemed like they had been stored for a long time.
It had been a long time since he had enjoyed the satisfaction of this sour juice. After swallowing one grape, he felt much better. Grapes were truly wonderful.
"May I ask, sir, are you not very old?" Amy Fairchild seemed like she wanted to find a topic to break the awkward silence.
Jesse said, "I’m almost eighteen."
"Last night, I was so worried that something might happen to you," she said. "You are so young, doing such a dangerous job outside. Your parents must be worried, right?"
Jesse took another grape and said, "My parents are not here. They think I’m doing labor work like bricklaying in Stormwind, so they won’t worry."
"But they…" Amy couldn’t finish her sentence and tears suddenly poured out.
"I don’t know, but if we lose Little Rose, I really don’t know how to face Matt, I really don’t know how to continue."
Seeing her looking down, Jesse also felt uneasy, if her parents knew what she was doing here, they might insist on her returning to Lordaeron, right?
"Alright, alright, don’t try to play emotional cards, find another child to get the extra money, you know how disgusting it is to go into the wolf’s den? Yesterday, I told your man two silver coins were two silver coins, the wolf meat and fur you make can’t count as money, I didn’t say I wanted those things, even this bunch of grapes can’t count."
"Doesn’t count, doesn’t count." The woman wiped her tears, tried to force a smile, and said, "The money is ready, we’ll give it to you when you return."
"By the way," Jesse said, "remember to take your child to have a look, especially find a priest, you know there are some undead in the south, we worry that the wolf disaster is related to those undead."
The woman nodded solemnly and said, "We know, we’ll take her to town tomorrow afternoon."
"That’s good." Jesse lay in bed, groaned, and said, "I want to lie down a bit more, feeling a bit sore."
After the young Lady Forrester left the room and gently closed the door, Jesse finally felt much more relaxed.
You don’t have to worry about those annoying and unsolvable problems your parents have.
Right now, he remembered the wolves from last night, the group of wolves that surrounded him and Greed, and the Fear he successfully cast.
He didn’t even know if that was Fear… because according to the game’s rules, Fear should only frighten one person. Besides, even when Gakin was in the streets of Old Town, he didn’t scare Surena Caledon.
The Fear that Jesse cast back didn’t affect Surena who was observing from the sidelines.
So what was it then?
Thinking about this, Jesse noticed the stick leaning against the wall that he had looted from the Orc Warlock.
He remembered that night vividly, after he chanted the spell, everything became blurry, only the evil light released from the stick with the incantation impressed him, now recalling it felt like a hallucination.
Tearing off some of the cloth wrapped around the stick, he didn’t find any Mageweave or gems that could emit evil light.
Does this magic wand really have the ability to strengthen dark spells?
In the game, a regular magic wand doesn’t have the same special effects as in the story. But Jesse knows it’s not right to copy the game’s settings and data to the real Azeroth.
Plus, a normal Orc Warlock can’t possess an artifact with powers surpassing countless legendary magic wands, even if they’re a member of the Shadow Council.
So far, he hasn’t really understood how magic wands specifically affect magic in this world.
"Jesse." Greed appeared out of nowhere, standing at the threshold of the doorway of another room, looking over. He said, "I just had a great idea."
