Chapter 439: Returning From Nethergarde
Not only Vereesa looked forward to having the chance to go to Thelsamar again to eat, but Jesse looked forward to it too.
When their bodies recover, maybe they can also compete with these two endless drinkers to see who can drink the most…
I wonder if there is a spell in Shadow Magic that can increase one’s alcohol tolerance.
Everyone has their own wishes; Greed wants to become stronger and progress towards his goal of becoming the "true Mountain King," Vereesa hopes to become a respected Farstriders’ ranger like her sister, maybe even become the Ranger-General of Silvermoon City… or at least a ranger lord like Lotheb Sarlon.
Jesse, of course, hopes to spend a lot of time with both of them, whether it’s chatting, drinking, eating, or adventuring together.
Even facing life and death… doesn’t seem so scary.
He wants both of them to achieve their goals soon, just like himself; he also has his own goals.
Buying a house.
Buying a house early.
But now, can’t buy a house in the name of Jesse Seso.
But since it’s for parents, just register it under mom and dad’s names, and Jesse can act as a "proxy" to communicate with the people at the Stormwind registration office.
The next morning, Jesse said goodbye to Amy, the teacher, and Greed, and started the journey back to Stormwind.
Traveling with the carriage carrying supplies to Nethergarde, crossing The Black Morass into South Elwynn and arriving at Darkshire took more than a week.
While in the swamp, Jesse hoped that after the Dark Portal closed, some of the shadows covering the entire Duskwood would dissipate, just like the Blasted Lands suppressed by darkness.
It wasn’t until Jesse arrived at Deadwind Pass that he realized the shadow over Duskwood had nothing to do with the Dark Portal.
Deadwind Pass is a valley that must be passed through when entering Elwynn from the swamp. When Jesse looked south from Redridge, it was an inconspicuous path in the hundreds of miles of mountains that were not visible.
At the Language Orcish meeting in Dalaran, Jesse lied and said he found the Orc Warlock in Deadwind Pass, got lost there, suspected that he was disturbed by the dark power of Karazhan, and the mages present did not directly question him, quickly believing him.
At that time, Jesse also felt very persuasive in what he was saying.
But when he actually arrived here, he understood why those mages believed it right away.
Looking south from this small path, the dark dead forest covered everything, with some shadows of town ruins in the blur.
The valley was rugged and complex, with either dense woods or deep ravines if one ventured deeper, and fog pervading everywhere – even without the magical interference from Karazhan, it was easy to get lost.
If it weren’t for the mountains blocking this place, the Dark Energy from Medivh’s Tower would have leaked out unimpeded, and Elwynn Forest wouldn’t be any better off than here – even Stormwind might have been affected.
Emerging from the valley of Deadwind Pass, passing through a slope of barren, dead trees all the way down, one could soon see an abandoned Stormwind Kingdom watchtower, with a Lion flag on top that had turned somewhat ashy from being corrupted by Shadow Power, probably set up during King Llane’s reign.
Upon seeing this watchtower, the leader of the caravan reminded the others that Darkshire was just ahead. Jesse tried to stand up on the carriage and look towards the distant lowlands, where indeed a dark forest could be seen at the end, with some scattered lights that looked like stars.
They arrived in Darkshire at dusk. Jesse could only tell the time by relying on his pocket watch. He made his way familiarly to the inn, ordered some food and drink from the innkeeper, and booked a room for the night, but the innkeeper refused to take any money.
Jesse originally thought he had been recognized inexplicably again, considering he had rested at this inn a few times before and the innkeeper seemed to remember him. However, he found out with curiosity that it was because of the clothes he was wearing.
His previous Dalaran Battle Mage robe had inevitably been burnt by his own Shadow Magic, lasting only a few days, almost breaking the shortest survival record of the Elf Mage robe he had worn during his last outing with Vereesa.
Now he wore old military clothes that he got from the supply room, in addition to his own everyday clothes in the small room. These clothes were easily recognized as those of a veteran returning from Nethergarde.
In the words of the boss, each veteran carried a scent of "a comforting smell of demons."
With that in mind, Jesse had to accept it.
After having his fill and resting in the inn room at night, Jesse looked at the Living Ice Crystals. At this point, its power seemed to have recovered considerably.
On the day before leaving Nethergarde, Vereesa mentioned that it might take about two weeks for this thing to recover.
Judging by the energy contained in the gem at that time, her estimation was likely accurate.
Jesse didn’t expect this thing to work like the accessories in the game, activating in a minute or two. Even with two weeks, it would be sufficient in case of emergency.
It was time to test its magic recovery ability now.
During this time, Jesse had not cast any spells or used any magic, so he couldn’t feel its magic recovery speed. However, the cool sensation it constantly emitted was quite comforting in the summer.
Jesse didn’t know if he needed a special wrap to keep magic away during winter.
Jesse decided to cast a weakened Mage Armor spell on himself, which was the safest spell he could cast now with a clear sense of the magic energy it consumed.
After casting the spell, he felt like he had used about a third of his energy. Compared to when he first learned Mage Armor and fainted before finishing casting, this was much better.
His magic skills were improving, and as he used more magic, his energy limit was increasing.
Jesse wondered if drinking the Sunwell water had given him any extra boost.
According to Malin, even after drinking the water, Jesse was still in danger. Most of the water’s energy was used to heal his wounds and counteract the shadow corruption.
Holding the gem in his hand, Jesse felt its magic seep into his body, gradually restoring his mana. Although it was helpful, it was not as effective as directly drinking a Mana Potion from Ursula.
Despite this, the significance was great. If Jesse faced the demon army again, wearing the magic crystal would prevent him from feeling increasingly exhausted as the battle progressed.
To test the crystal’s effectiveness against the demon mental disorder, Jesse planned to wear it and consult Molofeel tomorrow after a good night’s sleep.
