Chapter 437: Activating Power
"You should hold onto it, Jesse," Vereesa stared at the gem and said, "When I hold it, I always feel itchy inside."
"You elves sure have quite a problem," Greed said.
The elf glared at Greed, and Jesse asked, "So how do I activate it?"
Vereesa said, "Actually, I can’t explain it clearly. You can try to extract magic from it…"
"Extract magic from it?" Jesse repeated her words slowly, then said, "Do you think this is something us humans can do?"
"I think it’s about creating an Arcane resonance inside it, and then releasing power to its wearer," Vereesa tried to explain, "But it’s definitely not the kind of power that harms. You wouldn’t want to destroy it, right?"
Jesse thought for a moment and asked, "Is it similar to casting Arcane Intellect?"
"I… can’t say for sure," Vereesa said, looking at the gem.
Jesse instinctively felt it was difficult. He furrowed his brow, as casting other arcane magic usually involved spells, gestures, and materials to connect with Ley Line. He had no connection with arcane energy.
"So, are there any spells to activate this artifact?" he glanced at the elf and asked.
"I’m not a mage, how would I know so much," Vereesa said helplessly. "Maybe you can try touching it, feel the magic inside, and see if you can resonate with it, like… like…"
Vereesa was at a loss for words, she finally said after thinking for a while, "Like dancing with the magic within."
"I can’t dance," said Jesse.
Greed slapped himself in the face.
Vereesa sighed as she watched Jesse, then suddenly snapped her fingers and said, "Just like riding a chocobo, uh, I mean riding a horse! You can ride a horse, right, Jesse?"
"Isn’t this a bit too far off, but I’ll give it a try first."
Jesse picked up the gem, closed his eyes, and tried to feel its magical power.
It must be said that spending an afternoon with the Living Ice Crystals had given him some insights, and this gem’s restoration of magical power seemed to resonate with the gem more easily.
Riding a horse… What does it feel like?
Feeling the rise and fall of the horse’s back, Aarna’s footsteps and temperament…
Slowly, Jesse seemed to have a bit of a sense of the swirling Arcane energy, like the mother horse he was trying to control, sometimes moving with his thoughts, sometimes not so obedient… So, how can he "activate" it?
Jesse tried to change the direction of the magic within him. As his awareness became more in tune with the magic, he suddenly felt a sensation of "dancing".
"It’s time, Jesse."
Upon hearing Vereesa’s voice, Jesse tightened his focus. Suddenly, he felt a warm magical energy enveloping him, not like Arcane, but more like the healing Holy Light released by a priest in a cathedral trying to cure him!
This miraculous thing…
Jesse opened his eyes and saw the gem in his hand emitting a golden light. It was indeed golden Arcane energy, not Holy Light. Vereesa and Greed both widened their eyes in astonishment.
As the golden light faded, the gem dimmed slightly, yet Jesse felt a surge of energy he hadn’t felt in a long time.
Areas on his body that had been sore, including the wounds beneath the bandages that couldn’t be removed yet, seemed less uncomfortable. Even the corrosive scars from overusing shadow power…
So, is this gem using this power to combat shadow damage?
Jesse finally understood. He looked at Vereesa and asked, "This thing isn’t only usable once, is it?"
"How could this be possible." Vereesa rested her chin on her hand, gazing at the gem. She said, "If this is indeed the amulet worn by Aegwynn, then it must have existed for at least eight hundred years. Hasn’t anyone tried to activate its power during these eight hundred years?"
"When do you think we can use it next?" Jesse looked at the slightly dimmed gem and said, "I feel like its power is much weaker now than before."
"I’m not sure." Vereesa said, "Just for now… I can’t sense how quickly it’s regaining its power. Maybe tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, let me check again, maybe I can estimate a rough time."
"Indeed, it is of the Arcane race." Jesse exclaimed.
Vereesa smiled and said, "If I truly had such Arcane talent, maybe Alleria would have sent me to study magic in Faralyn at that time."
As she mentioned this, her gaze suddenly dimmed, and her smile disappeared.
The three of them fell silent for a while. At that moment, the sommelier came over and placed four cups of wine on the table. The dwarf sniffed the cup and asked, "Hey, madam, what kind of wine is this?"
"You can call it Nethergarde Bitterwine." the sommelier smiled and said, "It’s surely not an ordinary drink for warriors facing demons and Orcs."
Greed nodded and said, "I haven’t tried it before."
"Probably because you arrived late during that time," the sommelier replied.
Greed said to Vereesa across from him, "This wine smells very good, perfect for teaching you a lesson, Elven Wisp."
The elf looked at Greed with eyes wide open and said, "Let’s do it."
At that moment, Jesse glanced at the two of them, then at the wine glass, and then at the female sommelier who brought plates of food. He casually took a small piece of dried meat from one of the plates and tasted it for its saltiness.
Greed grinned crookedly, staring at Vereesa, "You’re truly inexperienced."
With that, he quickly downed a glass of wine, coughed, and then slammed the empty glass down, saying, "Drink!"
Vereesa gritted her teeth, gulped down the entire glass in one go, then smashed the glass on the table and began devouring everything on it in a frenzy.
Jesse quickly grabbed a cookie and stuffed it into his mouth. The intensity was such that any delay would have resulted in it being taken away.
Greed ate a piece of bread, then downed half a glass of wine and gestured to the sommelier, saying, "Bring two more glasses!"
Vereesa stared at the dwarf, picked up another cup and drank it all at once. Greed looked at her in surprise, immediately finished his remaining half cup, burped, took the cup handed to him by the sommelier, and pushed a cup to the elf on the opposite side who couldn’t stop eating or drinking.
Jesse glanced at Vereesa, then at Greed. The latter raised his cup and gulped down a whole cup, feeling a bit strained. After setting down the cup, he took a deep breath. At this moment, Vereesa did not drink along, but instead leaned on the table, staring at Greed, struggling to keep her eyes open.
After a moment, she looked at Jesse and said, "Don’t drink what I have left."
"What do you mean?" Jesse asked.
As soon as the words were spoken, Vereesa immediately flopped onto the table.
Greed looked at her with a sneer and said, "See, this elf can’t handle it. Let’s go, Jesse, I’ll… take you back to the riverside!"
