Chapter 434: A New Name
After saying goodbye to Malin, Jesse walked out with his magic wand.
As the evening approached, even though it was probably August by now, the Blasted Lands were chilly with a cool breeze, despite it being the hottest time in Stormwind.
It wasn’t as cold as the winters in Lordaeron, but Jesse felt a slight chill in the clothes he was wearing.
Nevertheless, the cold was still better than the intense heat brought by the lingering fel magic from before, by who knows how many times.
Jesse took one step at a time towards his home on the other highland, thinking about what would be a suitable name for himself.
Lost in thought, he suddenly stepped on a stone or a pit, his feet gave way, his arm groaned in pain as he couldn’t hold on, and he fell to the ground, his magic wand rolling away.
He muttered to himself, brushed off the dust from his face, opened his eyes to look at his magic wand, and then a dwarf picked it up.
Jesse raised his head to look at the dwarf, but the moonlight made it hard for him to see the face clearly.
"Strange, after sleeping for a few days you don’t recognize me, young man," said the dwarf.
Jesse couldn’t help but laugh, he helped himself up and sat on the nearby dirt mound saying, "Give me back that thing!"
Greed handed over the magic wand with a smile, sat down beside Jesse, leaned against a rock, and said, "With you looking like that, they let you out?"
Jesse cleared his throat and said, "Maybe they thought someone who can use magic to blow up a demon king wasn’t going to get into trouble so easily in Nethergarde."
"You rascal…" the dwarf chuckled.
He sighed, looked up at the moon and said, "Honestly, at first I really thought you were a goner. I’m not like Vereesa Windrunner, waiting and watching every day, I’m not that strong, those days were tough to stay optimistic. If I didn’t go out to kill a few demons, I felt like I wouldn’t make it, Jesse."
"I remember you used to be quite optimistic." Jesse said, "Every time going off to face death, but always feeling like nothing would happen."
Greed said, "This time is different. I don’t know why, but I feel like I am not strong enough to protect my brother."
Jesse asked, "How strong do you want to be? Do you know what kind of monster you are dealing with?"
Greed replied, "They didn’t give many details. I just know he is incredibly strong, stronger than any monster I have ever seen."
Jesse explained, "It’s probably because they are unsure of what he is. If the elves’ records are correct, there has only been one Pit Lord in this world since its creation, Greed, and this is the second one. Sending him here means the demons really want to protect the Dark Portal."
Jesse pointed out, "Think about it, you are facing off against a leader that even the Burning Legion hesitates to send to battle. Do you still think you are not strong enough?"
Greed admitted, "But obviously, I can’t defeat him. Look, this is the scar he left on me after one strike. He easily broke my skin with just one blow. I know that if I can’t dodge his attack even once, I will immediately turn into useless rubble."
Jesse couldn’t look away from the scar on Greed’s arm until Greed covered it up.
Greed reassured, "Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. I know you are eager to use that magic against the demon, fearing for my life. I understand your intention, dear brother, and I will remember this kindness."
Jesse coughed and said, "I am already starting to regret this."
Hearing Greed laugh made Jesse even happier, unable to hold back his own laughter.
The two of them laughed for a while, until Greed sighed and said, "Though it was a bit tough, but I haven’t had a fight like that in a long time. A real opponent should be like that, even though a bit uglier than I imagined. By the way, did you see it?"
"Of course, I saw it, I’m not blind," Jesse said. "And I heard that many people really thought you were the Mountain King!"
The dwarf said, "They better not think that now. If it was Muradin Bronzebeard in front of that demon instead of me, he would have surely performed much better than I did. So, I must work hard to reach that level. I don’t want to be a Mountain King who’s worse than others."
"There’s still plenty of time, no need to rush," Jesse said. "I will definitely help you, Greed."
"Focus on getting better first," Greed said, patting Jesse’s shoulder.
"Be gentler, damn it…" Jesse coughed and said.
"Alright…" the dwarf quickly said, "I didn’t expect you to be this weak. Sorry, ha."
Jesse stared at him and said, "Now help me come up with a name, Greed. I can’t go on telling others that I’m Jesse Seso from now on!"
"Hmm, yes, after all, you are already dead," the dwarf stroked his beard and said, "I’ll give you a Dwarven name, Kedgar, how does that sound?"
"What do you mean?"
"Meaning trust," Greed said, "I believe you are a human absolutely worthy of trust, and I am sure other dwarves feel the same way."
Jesse’s expression shifted from curiosity to speechlessness.
"What is the name of the archmage among Lothar’s sons?"
"Khadgar," Greed quickly responded.
"Ah… damn, it’s the Bronzebeard Dwarf accent," he suddenly realized, saying, "The thing is, in this world, there are too many dwarves and humans named Kedja, Kedgar, Khadgar, or Kehadgo, changing your name wouldn’t hurt, right?"
"No!" Jesse said, "Think of another one!"
Greed lowered his head, started counting on his fingers, mumbling to himself, and after a while said, "Jurke, how about that?"
"What does it mean," Jesse asked.
Greed explained, "In the Dwarven language, it’s a color between purple and light pink. The Dark Iron Dwarves used to use this word to describe the flames created by magic. What do you think? Like Arcane and Shadow, I think it’s a good name, perfect for you, the little one who likes to burn things."
Jesse nodded and said, "It’s really simple, so how many dwarves in your group are named this?"
"Probably not many in the Dwarf Wildhammer, I’m not sure about Ironforge," Greed explained. "There might be some in Shadowforge City, as those dark fellows are more interested in things like these flames and Arcane, but don’t you just need a name that’s ordinary and nothing special?"
Jesse said, "Jurke, that’s settled, it sounds like a name not for a good person."
"As long as you’re a good person, this name will start to sound more and more like a good one, Jesse, I mean, Mr. Jurke," Greed couldn’t help but chuckle.
"Perhaps you should stick with what you’re called," Jesse reminded him.
