Chapter 433: Still the Teacher
Although Jesse said he didn’t want Vereesa to help him retrieve the two items, after a nap at home, in the evening he obediently went to ask Malin about his things.
In the evening, Nethergarde became lively again. The soldiers stationed here mostly finished their day of patrolling or training and returned to the barracks or hurried to the tavern. The square was filled with the sound of chatting and conversation.
However, Jesse could sense a lingering gloom hovering over the place. After nearly a month had passed, the celebrations, cheers, and relaxation that should have happened were all in the past.
What lingered in Nethergarde now was only the sadness of losing comrades or friends, along with a longing for the expedition force stranded in the other world.
Yet, to find them, they must reconnect Draenor and Azeroth, which meant another Dark Portal—a possible encounter with Orcs, demons, or even more troublesome threats.
The terrible fel magic disaster that Stormwind faced before is still fresh in everyone’s memory. Even further in Stormwind, places like Goldshire, Darkshire, and Lakeshire look the same. The efforts of the expeditionary forces seemed completely wasted.
This unsolvable conflict also worsened the complex emotions in Nethergarde.
According to the guard from the Kirin Tor, the Mage Tower was tainted by the Pit Lord’s demon blood. Despite several purifications, for safety reasons, all mages have been moved to a barracks near the elves. Malin lives in a small room on the third floor.
Just walking down this steep hill and climbing up another one almost cost Jesse his life.
After reaching the barracks with the Kirin Tor flag, Jesse struggled to climb to Malin’s room on the third floor and knocked on the door.
Malin opened the door, surprised to see Jesse, and asked, "How did you come here alone? If you wanted to see me, you should have told your guardian."
"I wanted to exercise a bit by myself, Master," Jesse said. "You know I used to run to your place in Stormwind for work, so it’s a habit."
Malin nodded helplessly and whispered, "Come in, Mr. Seso."
Jesse nodded and moved into the room, pointing to a small chair, "Can I sit here?"
"Have a seat," Malin said, leaning on the nearby cabinet.
Jesse sat down and took a deep breath, saying, "Master, I have come to retrieve my belongings."
"Are you planning to leave Nethergarde?" Malin asked.
"No," Jesse replied. "I obviously don’t have the ability to leave in my current state, but having my things with me gives me some peace of mind."
Malin said, "Then, wait here."
With that, he left the room. Jesse, feeling exhausted, squinted his eyes, recalling the words Vereesa had said to him that morning. He ended up falling asleep, only to be awoken by the sound of the door opening.
He felt like Malin was leaving and returning in quick succession.
Luckily, he looked extremely weak to begin with, so when Malin saw him with his half-open eyes, he didn’t find anything strange.
The old mage carried a magic wand wrapped in beautiful runed silk, while the Azuresong Mageblade was sheathed in an elven scabbard with golden patterns on a green base. Jesse thought they must have simply tossed away his previous dirty and tattered scabbard.
"These two things still stand out." Malin said, "Just be careful not to attract too much attention."
"In Nethergarde, can’t I reveal who I am?" Jesse asked.
Malin looked at him for a while, then slowly said, "I understand this might make you uncomfortable, especially considering your age. I’ve been young too, dreaming of becoming a hero and defeating impossible enemies like the Tirisfal Guardian from legends, being admired by many. So, I think I can relate to how you feel now."
"But most people in Nethergarde now think we couldn’t save you in the end. So, they will gradually forget how you used magic to defeat Azgath and only remember you as the hero who saved Nethergarde… Because of your actions, they can go back home to see their families and continue their lives peacefully."
The old mage sighed and continued, "However, if they knew you were alive, their fear of you would grow stronger, overshadowing their gratitude and respect for you. Many years later, they might even forget how you became a hero in the first place, but they will always remember the danger you could bring."
"It’s not their fault. I can honestly tell you, even I can’t completely let go of my guard with you, especially with that person’s betrayal still fresh in mind. I mean… Medivh."
At this moment, Malin seemed unable to calmly say that name, as if mentioning him would trigger some curse.
He continued, "Of course, I’m not saying you will commit unforgivable crimes like Medivh did, at least so far you are more normal than him."
Jesse nodded, unable to make any promises at this moment, feeling powerless to do so.
"I understand, Master!"
"Maybe I’ve been worrying too much," Malin continued, "In addition, the Kirin Tor will pay more attention to your whereabouts, Mr. Seso. From what I know, they might contact you first if there are any unusual shadow disturbances within the Kingdom of Stormwind or Lordaeron. Life might get more complicated from now on."
"Of course, as long as you are innocent. If you intend to use your magic for something strange, it won’t be trouble, it will be ‘getting what you deserve.’"
After saying that, Malin handed over the magic wand and sword to Jesse. Jesse took them, hung the sword on his waist, hugged the magic wand, and seemed to gain more energy all of a sudden.
"Teacher, thank you!"
"Clearly, I haven’t taught you many useful things," Malin joked.
"Absolutely not," Jesse glanced at him and said, "I was never good at using arcane magic, Master. I’m grateful for you teaching me so many spells. You don’t know how many times I almost died, but saved myself using the Mage Armor and Fireball spells you taught me."
"By the way, can I continue learning more magic from you in the future?"
"When you return to the Wizard’s Sanctum, bring your new name, Mr. Seso," Malin said. "I will have Master Andromath make you a new ring, and then we can discuss new spells."
Jesse nodded and said, "I understand, Master."
"Take care of yourself, Mr. Seso," Malin said.
