Chapter 428: The Final Struggle
No… Hold on.
Jesse felt a tingling sensation on his scalp, he ran towards the direction where the Pit Lord was heading. On the vast battlefield, no demon, no one paid attention to why an apprentice mage started running sideways.
Under the charging demon, a Paladin, shining with golden light, was suddenly extinguished under the foot of the Pit Lord. Another knight urged his madly howling warhorse to charge at the Demon King in a deathly assault, then got drowned in a sea of demonic flames burning with the footsteps of the Pit Lord.
The Farstriders had already consumed a lot of their arrows during the previous long battles. At this point, the arrows available to shoot at this Demon Lord were scarce, and even if they hit him, it wouldn’t make a difference.
The monster’s demonic skin was covered with thick scales and sturdy armor. Inaccurately hitting those almost invisible weak spots was not even enough to scratch an itch for him!
Arcane Missiles started to be thrown down from the Mage Tower, but the Pit Lord opened his mouth wide and devoured them all, laughing madly as he continued forward. Behind him, countless soldiers who couldn’t keep up with his pace could only watch as he dramatically raised the huge blade in his hand…
His goal was the shiny Magic Crystal glowing with mysterious light in front of him.
The demon roared and swung his giant blade towards the top of the Mage Tower, but a dark red force dragged the blade slightly, causing the strike to miss and hit the bottom of the Mage Tower, slicing through a thick wall of rubble.
The tall tower shook, and the Arcane Crystal shimmered and flickered along with it, making the whole Magic Shield immediately unstable.
The demon hesitated, looking towards the direction of the strange force pulling, where a small and weak figure was kneeling not far away.
Jesse stared at the looming giant shadow in front of him, feeling the blood in his chest surging continuously. He coughed, spitting out some black blood, and struggled to swallow what he couldn’t cough out.
Using the Gorefiend’s Grasp drained all of his remaining energy in an instant, and disrupted the blood flow in his body.
The Pit Lord noticed him, though his ugly face showed little expression, Jesse could tell he was angered.
How could such a weak ant stop his actions?
In his blurry, reddish vision, with the demon’s massive body and wings blocking his sight, Jesse felt powerless as the demon raised his weapon high. He had lost all his strength, and didn’t know the extent of the damage caused by the earlier drag. He knew this was his last struggle.
The sky was covered in dark shadows, the gryphon let out a shriek, and the sound of flapping feathers echoed in the ears.
He looked at the Mage Tower behind the demon, has the teacher left? Has Amy left?
"Jesse!"
He didn’t know who was calling him, it seemed like someone familiar.
"Jesse Seso!"
The demon’s long sword suddenly swung down, then stopped abruptly in a burst of thunder!
Jesse watched as a stone-like monster in front of him forcefully blocked the Pit Lord’s weapon in mid-air with two weapons.
"Jesse Seso! You f***ing…"
With a series of cracking sounds, Greed Thunderfist raised his warhammer, which gleamed with electricity, and with a mighty blow, he knocked the Pit Lord’s giant blade aside!
The Pit Lord mumbled in surprise, then stared crazily at the small stone statue under his feet.
He tried to step on it, but the dwarf easily dodged. Then an axe struck the demon’s hind leg, making the demon even more hysterical. He sneered and cursed, and the demonic fire from his head to his fat tail exploded again.
Raising his thick arm, he gathered a powerful fel magic flame, and as he raised his right hand, a wave of evil fire suddenly shot out from under him and exploded all around.
Jesse was blasted out by this shock wave and fell to the ground, rolling among extinguished Hellfire debris. The intense pain and dizziness from the impact made him almost unable to regain any consciousness.
Trying to drag that weapon with Gorefiend’s Grasp was truly foolish.
"Greed…"
He struggled to get up, while the Pit Lord was wildly slashing at everyone coming at him – the paladins, the spear-wielding warriors, and the statue-like dwarf…
But the front line had already been breached.
The demon forcefully pushed aside the soldiers and charged towards them. A Demon Guard wielding a long-handled axe was coming at him, and Jesse, gripping the Azuresong Mageblade at his waist, felt like he didn’t even have the strength to draw the sword.
Just when he thought he was about to be cut in half by the demon, a bright light suddenly tore through the demon’s chest, releasing arrows of energy that pierced the ground. The Demon Guard immediately knelt in front of himself, trembling and fell down.
Vereesa Windrunner’s shadow was already in front of him. She pulled out two long knives and with one swift motion, she chopped off the head of another Mo’arg soldier that was pouncing towards her.
She shouted incomprehensible words in the Sayaad Language towards the Farstriders and elves in the distance. She agilely dodged another Demon Guard’s attack and directly stabbed the Guard’s helmet with her sword and thrust another sword into the Guard’s chest. Stepping on his thigh, she leaped down and swiftly decapitated another Demon Guard.
In just a short time, she had lost count of how many enemies she had slaughtered. In the corner of her eye, her moving figure was like a spinning storm of blades, sweeping every demon attempting to attack Jesse. Only a blurry pile of limbs and heads remained.
Jesse struggled to raise his body and looked into the distance. The Pit Lord was almost finishing off the soldiers besieging him, leaving behind only broken and unrecognizable remains. Only a green-blooded statue of the Pit Lord, continually striking the almost unmovable demon with its weapon.
Jesse watched as the demon’s blade nearly missed hitting the dwarf several times, but the dwarf never flinched, instead, laughing louder.
"I won’t let you die, Jesse," Vereesa said as she plunged her blade into a demon’s chest, muttering with her remaining strength. Her voice was almost like a gasp rather than speech.
"Jesse Seso!" the distant statue roared in a rough, blurry voice, "This is the true battle, the battle that belongs to this bloodline… can you see it? Are you dead yet?"
"I fucking see it… and I’m not dead yet."
Jesse muttered, then bit his lip, he had an idea in his mind.
He didn’t know what he cared about, but he didn’t want to lose anyone, didn’t want to lose Greed, didn’t want to lose Amy, didn’t want to lose his teacher, didn’t want to lose Vereesa, didn’t want to lose… everyone here.
He thought, "I’ve never been a smart person. I’ve always been a fool who acts on impulse."
Perhaps this world shouldn’t belong to fools like him?
"Lurarlwenkta, Lua’lakipta…"
