Chapter 426: Dark Portal..
The Gryphon Riders in the sky quickly took control, and as expected, the demonic wings of Doomguards appeared in the sky after the Vile Bats. The Gryphon Riders decisively changed direction, heading towards those massive flying monsters.
Just then, a piercing scream rang out from the crystal atop the Mage Tower. Jesse looked up at the higher sky, where the green Hellfire meteors were shattering against a pale blue membrane in the air, turning into a dim shower of broken stones raining down.
This scene inspired all the soldiers on the battlefield, with cheers rising and falling. Ahead, passing a group of Farstriders, at the command of their leader, all the Farstriders simultaneously released a volley of arrows, a rain of Arcane-glowing arrows streaking across the sky and falling among the demons in the distance, provoking a mixture of cries and wild roars.
More volleys of arrows flew from all directions towards the front. Jesse, along with the Battle Mages, followed the dwarves charging ahead from the side to the demon formation. The dwarves in front yelled and swung their giant axes into the Demon Guards, who were twice their size, appearing almost engulfed by the demons at once. But with various screams and curses, soon one Demon Guard after another fell, the sounds of axes chopping into bone and flesh echoing continuously.
Jesse saw that the skilled Battle Mage in front of him commanded the formation, summoned a magic shield, and entered the demon army.
The other Battle Mages behind them, recruited from the Wizard’s Sanctum or other mage groups, tried to imitate by summoning protective shields. Jesse, who didn’t know any normal shield magic, followed along.
Jesse first killed a Demon Guard crawling on the ground with two legs severed by a dwarf, and then used a Scorch Curse to blast the wings of a Vile Bat attempting to attack the mages from the air.
Soon, Jesse felt the thrill of battle. As the demons approached the dwarf axemen, he and the other Battle Mages charged into the demon army. The dwarves fought fiercely, almost like madmen. The Battle Mages mainly helped defend the flanks and block the incoming Vile Bats from the sky.
With some space, the Battle Mages could even cast Fireball or Arcane Missile spells to support the frontline.
They were among the few true mages on the battlefield, as most mages, including those from Quel’Thalas, were supporting the magic shield created by the Magic Crystal in the Mage Tower.
Jesse could almost feel the edge of the magic shield. In the distance, the Eredar Wizard tried various spells to bombard the shield, with little success. The Hellfires from the sky continuously struck the shield, but none could penetrate it, not even into the Alliance forces, let alone the walls of Nethergarde.
As the battle went on, it seemed the demons couldn’t break the Alliance’s line, but Jesse sensed another problem.
Endless waves of Demon Guards and Mo’arg crazies joined the army, but there were no continuous reinforcements from Nethergarde to replace the fallen or injured soldiers.
The Eredar Wizards were still standing nearby fearlessly guiding magical shields, only one Eredar Wizard had been defeated so far. The Dragonhawk Knights could no longer break through the heavy protection of the Doomguards to attack them.
The mages in the Mage Tower didn’t know how much longer they could hold on.
However, Jesse didn’t have the strength to pay attention to other situations. His focus was barely enough to deal with the demons in front of him.
Gryphons and Dragonhawks in the sky were engaged in a tough battle with much larger flying demons. It was hard to tell who had the upper hand. The battlefield seemed to be at a standstill.
A Demon Guard was relentlessly attacking a shield-bearing dwarf with a black giant sword. Jesse stabbed the Demon Guard from behind, making it cough and kneel before the dwarf chopped its head off with an axe.
He took a few breaths and heard low growls approaching closer.
"Felhound!"
A Battle Mage loudly warned the surrounding mages, and they all stopped casting spells almost simultaneously. Jesse saw a Felhunter rushing towards him between the legs of the Demon Guard!
More dark shadows emerged beside the demons’ legs, clearly aiming to attack the group of Battle Mages!
The dwarf warriors in front saw that the Felhounds were about to pass them and attack the mages behind, so they swung their axes to chase and kill these running monsters. However, they couldn’t stop a few from the rushing pack, and soon these Felhounds pounced on the mages one by one, suddenly cutting off the magical support here.
Jesse pierced the chest of the Felhound in front of him that was trying to attack him with a sword. He then walked over and struck another Felhound that was trying to sneak up on another mage with a swing, cutting off one of its tentacles that was unfolding. He stabbed into its back with another sword.
Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in his back. He turned around and cut off two tentacles that had already pierced his body with a sword, then stabbed into the Felhound’s mouth with another sword.
Jesse, feeling pain, held his waist, but then heard a low growl from a Felhunter approaching from behind. He reluctantly turned back to draw his sword, but before he could, the Felhound was struck in the head by a flying short axe, smashing its brain and rolling far away.
No one picked up the axe, and the direction the axe came from was chaotic. A dwarf was sitting on top of a Demon Guard, repeatedly hitting its head with his fist.
Just when Jesse thought they would have to retreat to the castle to defend to their deaths, a mage next to him suddenly muttered, "Dark Portal… Look, Dark Portal…"
Jesse looked up in the direction of the Dark Portal and saw that the once steady, never wavering green curtain flickered a few times…
Would Khadgar’s plan succeed? He couldn’t quite tell if he felt excited, resigned, or a tightening of despair in his chest.
However, he had no time for any profound emotions at the moment, as endless waves of demons were still pouring in, and it seemed that the Alliance was struggling to maintain their initial advantage.
Jesse took a deep breath, lifted the long sword in his hand, and walked towards a Demon Guard who was attacking a shield-bearing soldier in front of him step by step.
