Chapter 425: Finally, the Day Has Come
Unexpectedly, Jesse had a peaceful sleep that night.
When he woke up in the morning, the sky was extra bright. He went to the terrace of Mage Tower and looked down. Outside the castle, the Blasted Lands looked very different, which made him feel very uneasy.
Compared to Elwynn Forest or Redridge, this place was dark enough, but it was much brighter than the past few days, almost sunny.
The thick clouds above him had cleared a bit. He could see the sun behind the clouds, a tinted white halo. Just one look made him feel extremely comfortable.
The dry weather, the gloomy but still bright sky, and a faint charred smell lingering around, was this a dream?
He pinched his own face and admitted that Jesse hadn’t had a dream he couldn’t distinguish in a very very long time. This must be real.
This was reality, because the Dark Portal was still there, unchanged.
Under the sunlight, the green curtain wasn’t as obvious, but it still stood beyond clear sight, revealing a bit of light, staring at this side like a slightly open magic eye.
Suddenly, hurried footsteps could be heard coming from inside Mage Tower.
"All Battle Mages gather in the square."
So the moment had finally arrived. When they reached the square, the Battle Mage was still gathering, while groups of soldiers were already leaving the city gate to head towards the city wall.
The dwarves, holding shields, singing unfamiliar songs and marching in rhythm, passed by. The elves split into two groups, with one heading to the city wall and the other following the human warriors and dwarven army leaving the city gate.
Jesse’s group followed a team of elf riders on ostriches to the outside of the city. As they walked out of the city gate, he saw a hill outside Nethergarde crowded with troops.
They raised a variety of flags, standing in rows facing towards the Dark Portal. Meanwhile, their Battle Mage joined a group of sturdy dwarven axemen.
Glancing at the Battle Mages beside him, Jesse saw that most of them had calm expressions, tightly gripping their swords and gazing ahead into chaos.
Suddenly, a dazzling light emanated from the crystal above the Mage Tower, dispersing all the darkness and thick clouds around Nethergarde, brightening up the area.
The protection of this Magic Shield extended far beyond the walls of Nethergarde. Perhaps, during the time when black dragons besieged Dalaran, the Kirin Tor mages used such a barrier to shield the city from dragon magic bombardment.
The soldiers of Nethergarde had to leave the city to confront the enemy and gain an advantage. Staying on the city wall would eventually deplete the power of the crystal and the mages, leaving them vulnerable to endless Hellfire and fel magic fireballs until the city fell and lives were lost.
General Alexandros Mograine appeared at the forefront of the queue, wielding the oversized Marshal’s Sword of Lordaeron. The sword was so huge, especially when viewed from a distance, that Jesse couldn’t help but worry about the heavy armor and horse that he was riding.
He seemed to be speaking loudly about something, and the soldiers in front were also responding loudly to his calls. But on Jesse’s side, besides occasionally hearing some high-pitched sounds, he couldn’t hear anything clearly.
Not knowing how long he had been silent, Jesse felt his legs standing were a bit sore, and when he urgently needed to move, there was suddenly a stir in the ranks.
He saw some figures emerging slowly from the dark woods in the distant lowlands.
Further up on the hillside, groups of shadows appeared. In the ravines and on the distant road, countless crowds of people were moving, burning with green flames on their bodies, holding various long weapons high, gradually converging and advancing bit by bit towards the high ground where Nethergarde was located.
"Finally…" Jesse heard a female mage beside him whisper.
Yeah, the oppressive atmosphere in these days almost made everyone collapse. Everyone knew something was going to happen, but no one knew when it would happen.
Instead of waiting for the sword hanging overhead to fall, it’s better to deal with everything early, at least here, where one’s own blade could still be of some use.
The demons’ legion was getting closer. Jesse noticed that among the demons at the front were several extremely tall red-skinned demons.
They were wearing dark golden armor, walking with proud strides far ahead of the other demons. By this time, they were so close to the front line of the alliance army that their appearance could be clearly seen with the naked eye.
These demons walk on hooves, have strong and tall bodies, with horns on their heads and strange antennae swinging back and forth on their chins. Their small eyes give off an eerie glow.
That was a group of Eredar.
In the end, these cunning wizards finally revealed their true selves.
"Attack!"
General Mograine roared loudly, followed by other generals from Quel’Thalas and Ironforge shouting commands in various languages.
"Advance!"
A nearby mage shouted, and Jesse followed the Battle Mages around him, drawing his longsword along with everyone else. Jesse also pulled out his Azuresong Mageblade from his side.
Although he tried to keep the sword from shining too brightly to avoid becoming a target on the battlefield, many mages and even elves around looked over in surprise. However, when the mages began chanting Mage Armor, Jesse realized his worries were unnecessary.
As the Alliance army began to push forward, the lead Eredar chuckled, then raised his hands to summon fel magic, followed by the other Eredar around him making the same gestures.
As Eredar Wizard cast their spell, the demon army began advancing with loud roars. They marched faster and faster, crossing through the formation of Eredar Wizards. At the same time, groups of Vile Bats appeared in the sky, flying in a dark mass across the desolate sky, their sharp screeches and wing flaps almost drowning out all other sounds at the moment.
Just as Jesse thought the vanguard of the alliance was about to be disturbed by the Vile Bats, several groups of Gryphon Riders dove down from different directions, dispersing the leading group of Vile Bats. Following them were a group of Dragonhawks screeching as they flew forward overhead, soaring past the battling Gryphon Riders and Vile Bats straight towards the Eredar Wizards!
The sky began to rumble, evil green lights appearing in the clouds… Indeed, the Eredar Wizards were summoning Hellfire!
The alliance’s vanguard emitted beams of golden light, the Paladins’ loud prayers clearly heard even in this chaos. Rows of Demon Guards hesitated as they encountered the illumination and strikes of the Holy Light, this moment of hesitance engulfed by The Silver Hand Knights’ Holy Light. In the distance, a group of knights in white and blue charged down from a high hill into the darkened ranks of demons, like a sharp spear piercing through the demonic formation… With the alliance’s vanguard led by Paladins pressing forward, the frontline of demons was beginning to crumble!
