Chapter 424: Battle Mage
The next day at noon, Jesse was eating dried mushrooms in the Mage Tower. He saw a mage wearing a Dalaran robe coming into the tower. The mage looked at another mage tidying up a desk next to him and asked, "Excuse me, is Mr. Jesse Seso in the Mage Tower?"
"I am Jesse Seso," Jesse raised his hand.
The mage approached Jesse and said, "Mr. Seso, you have been enlisted as a Battle Mage!"
Jesse was surprised. He knew that even those who wanted to join the Wizard’s Sanctum as Battle Mages needed to go through a series of tests and training. Why was he suddenly enlisted without going through all that?
Just when he thought he might be a "Battle Mage apprentice" or "Battle Mage assistant," the mage took out a ring from his pocket and handed it to Jesse, saying, "Keep this violet Battle Mage emblem safe, Mr. Jesse Seso."
Jesse took the ring and placed it beside the apprentice mage ring from the Wizard’s Sanctum, nodding bewilderedly.
The Dalaran mage glanced at Jesse’s shabby robe and said, "Go to the Alchemy Room near the Armory not far from here to collect your equipment from the Kirin Tor officials. Also, starting from tonight, Mr. Seso, you will be participating in guarding the city walls, from dusk until the first horn at midnight."
After saying that, he bid farewell and hurriedly left the Mage Tower, probably going to find the next mage enlisted in the same team.
When Jesse arrived at the logistics officer’s place, he was still a bit dazed.
He showed his own Battle Mage ring to a military officer wearing The Violet Eye robe and received a heavy package.
Upon opening the package in his room at the Mage Tower, he found a somewhat new blue-purple Battle Mage robe, along with a Battle Mage helmet with lining.
Trying it on, he could feel that the mage robe had been enchanted, but he wasn’t sure when it was enchanted. There were also some damages on the robe, which had been repaired before being given to him again.
In short, he didn’t really want to think about what had happened to the previous owner of this outfit.
In the following days, he attended several Battle Mage training sessions. It seemed that there weren’t enough mages here, and most importantly, there were fewer and fewer mages from Nethergarde.
From the conversations among fellow Battle Mages, Jesse could sense that everyone knew a decisive battle was approaching, and it was not far off.
That evening, Jesse stood on the city wall, looking into the distance. The green fire was burning the dark forest below where he had fought the Gryphon Riders before. The firelight cast a green glow on the entire Nethergarde city wall, illuminating his cheeks with a green hue.
Most soldiers on the wall were coughing from either the endless dust or being somewhat affected by fel magic. The people in Nethergarde were all experiencing this, especially the humans, dwarves, and elves who were a bit better off but still not entirely comfortable.
"Mage, do we have any way to stop those green meteors?"
Next to Jesse, a guard suddenly asked.
"The Kirin Tor will lead the mages in setting up a magical barrier, sir," Jesse said. "I believe those meteors won’t be able to break through the archmages’ magic."
"Then why… can’t that darn magic barrier stop these dust now," the guard coughed.
Jesse looked up at the Magic Stone on top of the Mage Tower, it had dimmed almost completely, was it suppressed by fel magic? Or was it conserving power…
He wasn’t sure what would happen, but he knew he and the guard would soon witness the answer for themselves.
Just then, a group of Elf Rangers hurried past, one of them stopped to glance towards the city walls.
"Farstriders… pardon me," Jesse approached and said.
The ranger who appeared to be the leader of the group stopped and asked, "What’s the matter?"
"Can I ask, where is Mrs. Vereesa Windrunner right now?"
The elf glanced at his two rings and said, "She is currently with the ranger lord’s team on a clearing mission, mage."
Jesse asked, "What specific mission is it?"
The elf looked south and said, "We found demons at the Mandel Outpost in the south, mage. You should know what a clearing mission means."
"Thank you very much," Jesse said. "I understand!"
The elf looked strangely at Jesse and asked, "Do you have something important to report? Or are you actually asking about General Sylvanas Windrunner?"
"No, it’s about Ms. Vereesa," Jesse said. "Sorry to bother you."
The elf nodded and hurriedly joined his team.
Jesse clung to the city wall and looked towards the far southern slope where the collapsed ruins cast a shadow – that was the Mandel Outpost, a place guarding the Dark Portal, which was currently burning with fel fire. Otherwise, it would be impossible to see from this distance.
The adventurers don’t know if their mission is going smoothly or not.
Eredar’s mage…even killing one of them weakens the demons’ attack on Nethergarde.
When the horn for changing shifts sounded, Jesse met the mage who was taking over from him, and they returned to the Mage Tower. The hall was dusty, with dust everywhere on the stairs.
The room was cleaner than outside because it had been tidied up, but the mages lying there kept coughing, with almost half of them in pain and unable to sleep.
Jesse lay in bed, trying not to overthink, forcing himself to get a good night’s sleep.
Just as he was about to doze off, a gloomy and deep laughter suddenly came from outside.
"Can you hear the footsteps of doom, mortals?"
The voice seemed to come from far away, echoing from the sky and vibrating on the ground.
Jesse looked around and saw that most people were awake, wide-eyed and staring at the windows outside the door.
At that moment, a wizard started crying, trying hard to stifle his sobs.
"You are just one of the many worlds that have been destroyed, no one can stop Kil’jaeden, no one can stop the Burning Legion…"
The demon’s voice made the room fall silent once again.
Before long, a strange woman’s singing could be heard from outside.
"In the garden of dreams, the dew flowers bloom, not hindered by tears…"
"Look, the gentle moonlight softly kisses the banks of the Nazferiti, my love, at least tonight you can rest in my arms…"
Whispering the lyrics, "At least you…" Jesse drifted off to sleep unknowingly.
