Chapter 422: The Summoned Calamity
The Doomguard hit by the first bolt was covered in green tainted blood, an arm blasted off, leaving only a skeletal arm stained with evil green blood. Yet, it still grinned, or perhaps… the creature’s expression was naturally sinister.
Not only here, but the Gryphon Riders also flew into the group of burning magic eyes. Thunderbolts and lightning scattered all around, lighting up the forest below and the surrounding space. In the distance, a Doomguard was instantly hit by multiple thunderbolts, exploding into a mist of evil green blood, with shattered magical wings and body parts flying everywhere.
However, on Greed’s side, the Doomguard he faced was noticeably taller. Just as a Gryphon Rider swooped down from above raising a thunderbolt to strike at him, the monster suddenly caught a ball of black-smoke fire from its mouth, using its hand to throw it towards the oncoming gryphon.
The Gryphon Rider had to give up throwing the hammer and instead smashed it onto the ball of fire, getting hit by the evil fire that sprayed out, causing the rider and the gryphon to catch on fire and howl as they plunged into the forest below.
Greed’s warhammer had gathered a ball of electricity, and Jesse felt the demon gathering a powerful Shadow Power. He immediately started reciting a spell of fear, but felt like his consciousness was suddenly burnt by a flame. The Shadow Power he had managed to summon was instantly devoured by the evil fire.
"What is this…"
"Greed, watch out for Shadow Magic!"
A Shadow Bolt followed Jesse’s shout and flew towards them. Greed threw his warhammer into the air, exploding the Shadow Bolt heading straight for them.
After shattering the attack, the dwarf immediately shouted a command, causing the gryphon below to suddenly drop a large distance. The sudden force nearly threw Jesse off his seat, but he was thankfully held down firmly by the straps.
Another Shadow Bolt whizzed past from above, with the power of shadows emitting a sharp sound as it brushed past them. Fortunately, they had already dodged past the Doomguard.
"Go away!" Greed shouted in pain as the gryphon beneath him growled unhappily.
The gryphon leaped out to a distance of about thirty meters behind the Doomguard. Greed reached out to grab Jesse’s cloak and yelled, "Use your Black Magic to blast that mean dog!"
Jesse nodded and turned to look at the Doomguard below staring at him. He then glanced at the gryphons flying around dodging Shadow Magic and fel magic fireballs. He tightened his grip on the magic wand and pointed it at the demon, chanting the Scorch Curse spell!
A fireball exploded above the Doomguard’s head, breaking off his horns and burning his scalp. Shadowflame spread all over his body. He roared and tried to put out the black fire spreading on him. At that moment, a Gryphon Rider from below took the chance to swing a war hammer and smashed it directly into the demon’s chest, cracking his body in half. The demon went still instantly, got hit by the sudden gust and tumbled into the forest, getting torn apart by the airflow.
At the same time, a Doomguard wielding a sword suddenly appeared above Goergette, laughing madly and swinging the blade down. Jesse blocked it with his black staff, and the gryphon buckled under the impact, leaving Jesse feeling numb on half of his body.
If it was a regular magic wand, it would have been cut in two by the demon’s attack.
After being blocked by Jesse, the Doomguard was hit by Greed with a hammer on his shoulder, sending him flying and his black armor flying off.
The demon regained his balance in the air, flapped his black wings hard and charged back. Greed’s war hammer was now sparking with electricity as he raised it to strike the incoming demon in the chest, knocking him down into a dark trench on the ground.
The Gryphon Knight Order swiftly gained the upper hand with speed and surprise attacks. They had already defeated several Doomguards in a short time, leaving less than ten remaining in the distance. Greed changed direction and charged towards them, followed by around twenty to thirty Gryphon Riders launching an attack in that direction.
The mages’ magic was faster than the gryphons flying over. Arcane Missiles and Ice Spells filled the sky and kept striking the flying demons. Then, the dwarf Knight Captain shouted, "New enemies are attacking, mages, it’s time for you to shine!"
Jesse looked towards the captain and indeed saw a dark group of monsters appearing in the distance.
Loud screams could already be heard, yes, it was the Vile Bats that Amy had told him about! The Burning Legion reinforcements had arrived!
The Gryphon Riders had to awaken the thunder of their Warhammers to fight off the attacking Vile Bats. The closest Gryphon Rider swung a shining Warhammer into the group of monsters, releasing a wide range of lightning that struck many bat demons. However, they couldn’t dodge all of them, and some were overwhelmed by the bats and vanished.
The remaining Doomguards seemed encouraged, as the Gryphon Riders could no longer give their all, and the Vile Bats swiftly surrounded the battlefield with their agility and numbers advantage. Several Gryphon Riders were struggling against the sudden onslaught of imps being surrounded by the Doomguards, some even falling into the forest after being struck by the Doomguard’s Shadow Bolts.
Greed rode a gryphon and swooped over a gryphon angrily biting Vile Bats, while the Dwarf Knight on its back was missing.
At that moment, a Vile Bat dropped from above trying to attack Goergette’s head, but Greed smashed it to pieces with a hammer. Then, a dwarf threw a lightning-infused hammer, shattering three Vile Bats gathered together attempting to ambush another Gryphon Rider.
"It’s a waste of time. We target that Doomguard, Jesse, let’s take him down first!" Greed pointed at a demon below and said.
Jesse agreed, and suddenly a Vile Bat swooped down from above. Jesse smashed its head with a magic wand, and the bat’s body spun before falling into the dark trees below.
The bright lights around were tearing lots of evil bats apart. Goergette was carrying two people and weaving through them. Greed raised his war hammer high again, while Jesse lowered his magic wand and chanted a spell, gathering a ball of Shadowfire at the tip of the wand.
Their target, a Gryphon Rider entangled by Vile Bats, was flapping its wings trying to escape. Goergette stayed silent, but her speed increased, shaking off several bats attempting to pursue. She headed straight towards the Doomguard clad in green armor.
Greed took aim and as the war hammer approached, it burst with bright lights and was hurled with great force!
The war hammer spun, releasing a burst of electricity, yet the Doomguard seemed to sense the sudden lightning attack from behind, swiftly blocking Greed’s war hammer with a backhand strike!
After a burst of electric current, Doomguard chuckled and raised his sword to meet the oncoming gryphon. His heavy sword looked massive, a blow from which would probably cut Goergette in half!
Greed fiercely pulled the reins, but Goergette was too fast; they were about to collide… Jesse’s Fireball spell was completed just in time. As Doomguard was about to swing his blade at Goergette, Jesse detached the fireball from the magic wand and hurled it towards Doomguard’s face!
The gryphon tried to dodge, but the intense shadow explosion sent shockwaves, tossing them all around. Despite the chaos, it was still better than facing the Doomguard. Jesse glimpsed back and saw Doomguard’s body half blown into the forest. He realized his magical power had unexpectedly reached a new level.
Deep down, he knew that this was due to the intense emotions of hatred from the demons in the fierce battle on the battlefield.
"That’s it, Jesse!" Greed laughed as he pulled back his war hammer.
Looking into the distance, the Gryphon Riders have regained control. The demons are now being firmly suppressed, with only one Doomguard struggling to hold on. But he is badly injured and close to death…
"Wake up, for Kil’jaeden’s mark has descended upon this world!"
A deep roar shook the earth from the southwest, surprising many gryphons who looked in that direction. Even the Vile Bats were thrown into chaos.
Jesse immediately used Detect Demon to scan the southwest, but he saw nothing.
"I, Azgath, am his messenger, his herald!"
"Go forth, proclaim Azgath’s arrival to this world!"
The voice came from the Storm Altar. Could the Burning Legion have summoned a Demon Lord through the Storm Altar?
To the west of the fortress, Jesse saw a never-ending wave of Hellfire smashing into the walls. The land illuminated by the infernal flames was swarming with demon soldiers marching towards Dreadmaul Keep.
More and more Doomguards appeared on the horizon. The Gryphon Knight Commander shouted for a retreat, a sense of foreboding creeping into Jesse’s heart.
Dreadmaul Keep seems to be in trouble.
