Chapter 421: Urgent Departure
Early in the morning, Jesse was woken up by a loud horn.
He quickly sat up, knowing instantly that something was wrong upon hearing the horn.
It must be a problem at Dreadmaul Keep.
Dressed and heading downstairs on the spiral staircase, the excited cries of gryphons from outside echoed in the hallway. The clanking footsteps of soldiers in heavy armor resounded everywhere, while the locks of the gates rattled rhythmically in the chaotic Nethergarde.
Arriving at the Mage Tower, an archmage from Kirin Tor shouted, "We need mages who can ride gryphons!"
Several young mages from Lordaeron in white and blue robes stepped forward, accompanied by a group of Dalaran apprentices in purple robes. After a quick count, the archmage frowned slightly.
He sent the mages to the city walls and muttered, "Not enough, do we have any mages who can ride gryphons left?"
"Is it riding the gryphon alone?" Jesse couldn’t help but ask.
"Of course, we’re going with the Dwarf Knight to the Wizard’s Sanctum," said the archmage. "Have you ridden a gryphon before? If you have, just standing here means you haven’t fallen off at least."
Jesse hesitated and said, "I have ridden a wild gryphon…"
The archmage replied, "Then you’re already stronger than me. Hurry up to the city wall, the Gryphon Riders will tell you what missions are available."
Jesse nodded and followed the mages running up the city wall. As he looked to the west, he noticed a dark horizon lighting up with green flames.
That was the direction of Dreadmaul Keep.
"Human mage!" a Gryphon Rider grabbed his collar and directed his attention back. "Go ahead, there’s a troublesome flying demon ahead, mages can help. Go find a Gryphon Rider waiting for you, follow them and remember to choose the white, gray, big one!"
"Alterac Gryphon," Jesse said.
"Yes!" the Gryphon Rider patted his back, saying, "You’re a smart kid, go on now!"
Jesse nodded and walked past a white gryphon with a mage already seated on it. He heard some shouts up ahead.
"Is Jesse Seso here?! Can you hear me?"
Hearing Greed’s voice, Jesse hurried forward, squeezing past the mage and dwarf to where the voice was, grabbing Greed’s arm tightly.
"I’m here, Greed."
"I knew you would come, Jesse," Greed said as he stepped onto the gryphon’s nest. "Come, say hello to Goergette!"
The huge gray gryphon tilted its head and glanced at Jesse. Jesse nodded and said, "Hello, Goergette."
Goergette nodded, flapped its wings, and Greed said, "That’s enough. Come, my Jesse. I didn’t sleep much tonight, but I think the battle will be over before I doze off."
"Is that what you say before heading to battle, Greed?" Jesse said. "At least say something to reassure me!"
"Your pilot will guide you safely," Greed said, patting his chest. "Are you reassured now?"
"Are you going to turn into stone in the sky?!" Jesse asked.
Greed climbed onto the gryphon and smiled, saying, "That’s enough, there aren’t so many problems!"
Jesse also smiled as he sat on the gryphon. Greed helped him fasten the straps and said, "Protect this brother with grey feathers, Jesse. If I die, he can bring you back. But if he dies, we’re both done for, understand?"
"I understand," Jesse nodded.
"Also," Greed turned back and grabbed Jesse’s arm, whispering, "Don’t use Fear, at least not group Fear, and… don’t use your shadow shield!"
"Got it!"
"Very well, then let’s go, Jesse," Greed said. "I have always dreamt of showing you my true strength, of showing you me battling in the sky as a Gryphon Rider. I’ve always looked forward to this day!"
"Goergette, can you understand?"
Goergette nodded and let out a low growl, as if she understood what he was saying.
The mages on the city walls increased in number, gryphons of all sizes spread their wings, and giant gryphon feathers floated everywhere on the top of the city walls.
The cavalry under the city gate had set off, and the gryphons couldn’t contain their excitement as they watched the warhorses galloping on the black wasteland. Some gryphons even pecked at the Dwarf Knight behind them. The atmosphere on the city wall had become tense, with every living creature, both human and beast, staring at the green fire on the distant horizon.
It’s time to attack…
"Depart, depart!"
The Gryphon Knight Commander shouted in Dwarven, and the dwarves on the high battlements immediately sounded a long horn. The smaller black Hinterlands gryphons leaped out of the city wall one by one.
Greed tugged on the reins, and Goergette immediately let out a rumbling growl and leaped down, then flapped her wings fiercely and flew up into the sky.
The Gryphon Rider legion soared into the night sky, heading straight towards the green horizon. Jesse tightly gripped the straps on Greed’s back, holding her dark staff, and focused on the sky ahead.
"Our goal is to help support the ground forces in clearing the threats in the sky, Gryphon Riders and mages!" the Captain shouted loudly from the front. "Maintain formation, remember to assist your comrades, do not enter the demons’ circle alone! Control your gryphons!"
The Gryphon Riders responded loudly, and one dwarf yelled, "I want to charge into Dreadmaul Keep and kill more demons!"
"There will be a chance, young man! There will be a chance!"
The knights flew towards the battlefield with excitement, but as they flew further, the air became hotter.
The heat wasn’t just from the temperature, as they got closer to the demon army, the burning sensation of fel magic became unbearable.
Jesse swallowed and moistened his dry throat. He was starting to feel less worried about the enemies and more excited for the upcoming battle, hoping for a bloody and chaotic fight.
He knew that this was the influence of fel magic. If shadows make people suspicious, mentally unstable, and breed resentment, then fel magic brings forth fiery fanaticism, impatience, and recklessness.
Not just him, Jesse also felt the gryphon beneath him getting more eager to move forward.
At this moment, the dwarf captain turned towards the west and charged forward.
While changing direction, he shouted commands in Dwarven language. Greed heard the orders and immediately pulled the reins. Jesse felt the huge gryphon beneath him suddenly accelerate towards the captain, flapping its wings vigorously. Jesse felt like he was flying with no body, the view of the dark forest below blurred rapidly. Were they ascending?
Compared to the terrifying wild gryphon ride in Hillsbrad, this ride was like switching from a tractor in a field to a smooth car on a highway. Even the ascending felt gentle, not like a sudden turn that would throw one off.
"Get ready, Jesse."
Greed whispered as Jesse strained to look ahead, tiny stars were appearing in the dark, gloomy night sky.
What is that? Is it the evil flames above the bat-headed demon?
Jesse couldn’t see clearly here, the wind caused by the gryphon charging ruffled its feathers loudly. Other than the twinkling stars, Jesse couldn’t see much else.
But he concentrated, trying to use Detect Demon… then he saw terrifying shadows everywhere.
"Brothers, for Khaz Modan!"
Suddenly, a lightning bolt burst from the Gryphon Knight Commander’s hand, illuminating a dead treetop. The lightning spun fiercely and aimed straight towards a shadow behind a flickering flame ahead.
The flash struck the shadow, causing a violent explosion that lit up its target – a Doomguard!
