Chapter 420: Worst-Case Scenario
Greed looked at Vereesa and cleared his throat twice before saying, "I, Greed Thunderfist, have long heard of the renown of the Windrunner Family. It is a great honor for me, a dwarf with little future, to receive your help in healing my injuries and giving me a chance to soar once again. Truly, I am immensely grateful."
Jesse watched as Greed recited the words like reciting a lesson, thinking how he had held biases against Vereesa before. Yet now, upon meeting her, he spoke with such civility.
Vereesa said, "Aerie Peak has been one of Quel’Thalas’ most important allies for a century, Mr. Greed. Even if you are not Jesse Seso’s friend, seeking help from me, I will do everything in my power to assist you."
"Now we can consider ourselves friends, right?" Greed said. "It’s a shame we can’t get any drinks now, otherwise we could have shared a toast."
"Since we are soon to face a demon attack, I’ll pass on the drinks," Vereesa said. "There are reports of demons amassing forces, preparing to assault Dreadmaul Keep. Have you heard any news about this?"
Jesse replied, "General Mograine has already hinted at something similar. I believe the soldiers here are mentally prepared for what’s to come."
"Thankfully, we arrived here before the battle, or Nethergarde would have faced unimaginable pressure," Vereesa said. "Perhaps it’s not quite appropriate to say this, but I am actually looking forward to the battle starting sooner. Finally, we can confront the true evil hiding behind those Orcs."
Raising an eyebrow, Greed said, "I feel the same way, Miss Windrunner. Despite being an elf, I sense many similarities between your Windrunner family and us dwarves. Like you, I can’t wait to unleash my fury on those monsters!"
"Well said," Vereesa smiled and nodded, saying, "I hope we can defeat the demons earlier and establish a connection with the expeditionary forces."
Jesse took a sip of wine, then looked at the elf, wondering how to tell her about Khadgar possibly planning to destroy the Dark Portal.
But he also had doubts in his mind.
What if Mograine’s words were about the expeditionary forces planning to defeat the demons and take back the Dark Portal from the other side?
Because he had killed Teron Gorefiend here, and Teron Gorefiend had not been able to go to the other side of the Dark Portal to lead the Death Knights to stop the Alliance’s army… so everything became smoother…
But feeling the constant rumbling of the earth, Jesse felt that Teron Gorefiend’s death did not seem to make the situation better.
Kil’jaeden seemed to have seen Ner’zhul’s failure earlier. Otherwise, he would not have been in such a hurry to use the space crack torn open by Ner’zhul to let the demon army invade the collapsing Draenor.
However, he was not sure if in another timeline Azeroth had encountered a demon invasion at this time, but at least he felt that Khadgar closing the Dark Portal was not as troublesome.
Perhaps Teron Gorefiend’s role in the whole affair was not as important as imagined, and the ones truly influencing everything were Deathwing and Kil’jaeden.
But no matter what, he felt like he couldn’t stay silent, especially with Vereesa right in front of him.
"Your sister is the Ranger-General of Silvermoon City, Vereesa," Jesse asked, "Has she received any exact messages from the other side of the Dark Portal? I mean, precise messages, of course, if it involves any secrecy… you don’t have to tell me."
Greed whispered, "So, Jesse, you also suspect the words of that General Mograine, right?"
"I didn’t say that," Jesse replied.
"My sister didn’t tell me about the messages from there, but last night…" the elf paused for a moment, "She said she hoped I would prepare myself mentally and be ready for the worst."
Hearing this, Jesse felt a pang in his heart, could it be that Sylvanas knew that Alleria Windrunner might be trapped on the other side?
Now, he could almost be sure that the people here knew about Khadgar’s plan, otherwise what could be the worst situation?
"What do you mean?" Greed asked, confused, "What worst situation?"
Vereesa said, "She didn’t explicitly say what would happen, but I can guess almost what she means. Now all I can do is try to kill as many demons as possible, try to make the situation a little better, right…"
When saying these things, the elf looked and sounded very calm.
Jesse looked at her but didn’t say anything in the end. He felt like whatever he wanted to say seemed unnecessary.
"So we have pretty much reached an agreement on this, two of you," Greed said. "That is to kill demons as much as possible, including little Jesse, the youngest among us who should be taken care of the most, agrees with this."
"Little Jesse," Vereesa smiled and said, "Is this how he always calls you?"
Jesse said with a serious face, "Little brother, young man, little Jesse, I’m used to it."
Vereesa became even happier with this. She leaned closer and said, "Finally, someone understands how I feel in Quel’Thalas!"
"Has anything improved for you after returning from Stormwind?" Jesse asked.
"Of course, it has improved a lot," Vereesa nodded. "Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been allowed to come to Nethergarde. Strictly speaking, my training with the Farstriders has not been completed yet. Now, I should consider myself graduating early to become a real Farstrider."
"Then congratulations to you," Jesse said. "You have become a Farstrider, and this Greed Thunderfist is once again a Gryphon Rider!"
"It’s definitely worth celebrating!" Greed took a sip of wine and muttered, "We should find a place with plenty of wine to drink in this situation. Even Goldshire would do!"
"When we get back, we should get together and have a good meal!" Vereesa said.
"Let’s go to Thelsamar," Jesse said.
"Yes! Thelsamar, yay!" Greed happily agreed.
The two of them talked about their experiences and stories from Thelsamar. They kept drooling over what Vereesa said, and before they knew it, the horn on the city wall had sounded, signaling that the sentries needed to change shifts.
They arrived at the tavern late, so Greed said goodbye and headed towards the city wall.
"Thank you for the gift, Vereesa," Jesse looked at the elf next to him. "Just in this time alone, it has saved my life countless times."
"I told you that you would like it," Vereesa said. "Take care of it and let it protect you too!"
Jesse said, "I know."
"Let’s talk again next time, Jesse Seso."
"See you next time."
Watching the thin figure of the ranger leaving, at this moment, he noticed that the square of Nethergarde seemed to be bathed in moonlight.
But here, clearly, there wasn’t any moon to be seen. The black clouds never dispersed. If not for the torches on the city walls and the fire pits next to the castle, nothing could be seen in the middle of the night here.
Jesse looked up and saw a shining Magic Stone with Arcane light on top of the Mage Tower opposite. Under its glow, the smell of fel magic that filled the entire castle seemed to have been dispelled. Maybe he could sleep a little more comfortably tonight, he thought.
