Chapter 418: The Decision on the Other Side
Ever since Greed arrived at Nethergarde, the next two days became much easier. Even though Greed, as a Gryphon Rider, always flew out on reconnaissance missions, whenever he had free time, he would come to the Mage Tower to chat with Jesse. Sometimes, he would even run into Amy and talk to her about Jesse’s adventure stories, making Amy very envious.
However, despite Greed’s casual chats, the news he brought back was not always good.
The watchtowers near the Dark Portal were being destroyed one by one, the pressure near Dreadmaul Keep was increasing, and Greed went for another reconnaissance near the Storm Altar. When he returned, his face was pale, and Jesse couldn’t help but ask what he had seen. Greed only said he had never seen so many demons before.
The soldiers’ previous guesses were right – demons kept pouring out of the Dark Portal. If this continued, even if the elven reinforcements arrived, it would be difficult to turn the tide for the Alliance.
This afternoon, the entire Nethergarde was unusually quiet. There seemed to be no tasks to go out for, no busy soldiers moving around. Jesse didn’t hear any messages about mages going out. However, despite the calmness, Jesse’s mood did not relax. Suddenly, the sound of a trumpet blew again.
The continuous sound of the trumpet seemed to be calling everyone to gather in the square.
Jesse followed the mages out of the tower to the center of Nethergarde. Two people walked up onto a platform set up behind the square. One of them was an archmage from Kirin Tor. Jesse didn’t know him, but he was definitely one of the leaders of Nethergarde. The other person was a muscular human general with golden hair, wearing blue armor and a white cloak with a falcon emblem. He held a silver sword with golden patterns, and the blade was engraved with the emblem of the Kingdom of Lordaeron.
Jesse knew that he was Alexandros Mograine, a senior leader of The Silver Hand Knights and the overall commander of Nethergarde at that time.
He had fought alongside Anduin Marshal Lothar in the Battle of Blackrock Spire. After Marshal Turalyon crossed the Dark Portal, he became the most prestigious and highest-ranking alliance commander here.
"Colleagues of the Alliance."
He looked at everyone in the square and said in a deep voice, "This morning, I received a message from the other side of the Dark Portal. I believe this message should be shared with every person in Nethergarde before it is sent to those kings, ministers, and nobles. You have the right to know before anyone else on Azeroth."
"The expedition is achieving victory. Soon, the demons will lose their control over the Dark Portal."
Cheers erupted from the crowd. Jesse stared into Mograine’s eyes, feeling excited but also sensing something wrong.
If the expedition army really has the ability to gather all soldiers and Lothar’s son’s generals from various places in Draenor under the Dark Portal in less than two weeks, then why did archmage Khadgar choose to destroy the Dark Portal to protect Azeroth in another timeline?
Mograine continued, "The true goal of the demons is to spread as many minions as possible to Azeroth, pollute our lands, devour our world. Lothar’s son is doing everything in his power to stop them, our perseverance is strengthening their confidence!"
"So, before the expedition army achieves its goal, we must hold back this final darkness before dawn!"
"It can be foreseen that the days ahead will become difficult, demons will become more insane, but this is just the final struggle before destruction. The supply line from here to the Kingdom of Stormwind has stabilized, the army from Quel’Thalas is about to arrive, by then the entire alliance, whether humans, elves, or dwarves, will stand on the same defense line… No enemy can break this will."
"Our only, and sole goal, is to stop the demons here. Protect our world behind us, protect our home, and the Holy Light will stand by our side."
These words somehow dispelled the haze brought by various rumors in the past few days.
Listening to General Mograine’s arrangements for the upcoming battle, the focus of defense once again shifted to the Dreadmaul Hold, perhaps before long, the demons would launch an even more dreadful attack there.
Jesse still had some doubts about what he heard from the other side of the Dark Portal.
Perhaps there was indeed some information leaked, but this news was not about victory, but that the expedition army was planning to destroy the Dark Portal. Khadgar must have made up his mind to completely end the collapse of Draenor’s impact on Azeroth and at the same time block the demons’ passage to Azeroth.
In this situation, this is indeed the most direct and effective choice.
However, many people here have come to save their loved ones, brothers, or friends in the expedition. General Mograine certainly cannot tell everyone here that the Dark Portal is about to collapse, and the expedition may never come back.
It’s just that more and more demons are appearing, and it’s becoming crazier. This is already a fact that many people are aware of.
These days, the morale of the Nethergarde troops has been shaken a bit. After all, the battles are getting more and more difficult, with news of outposts and watchtowers being destroyed and lost coming one after another.
Mograine also has to come up with a way to keep the defenders going for a while longer, until the Dark Portal is destroyed.
Thinking back to what the general said earlier, he did not directly mention the expedition defeating the demons and the expedition about to take over the Dark Portal.
The general has always said that the demons are about to lose control of the Dark Portal, and the expedition will achieve their goal and complete their plan…
Of course, this is just Jesse’s speculation. He has no idea what is really happening on the other side of the Dark Portal.
By nightfall, the tavern in Nethergarde was already packed. Jesse and Greed couldn’t even squeeze in, so they had to go underneath the Mage Tower. While the Mage Tower did not restrict other soldiers from entering, apart from mages, not many people were willing to go to this uncomfortable place.
Greed was used to it, as he sometimes went to The Blue Recluse with Jesse when he was in Stormwind, so he didn’t really pay much attention to it.
After sitting down, the dwarf drank a sip of ice water made by a mage and asked, "What do you think about what the human general said?"
"I don’t know," Jesse replied.
Greed said directly, "I don’t believe any gryphon could fly out of that Dark Portal without being shot down. When I was near the Storm Altar, I took a look over there, and it was all swarming with dark demons, and among those demons… many can fly. What kind of Gryphon Riders would you need to deliver the message?"
Jesse didn’t know how to argue back. In fact, he was also thinking about this question, but he didn’t think Alexandros Mograine would make up so many things out of thin air.
"Regardless, we still have to continue fighting the demons," Jesse said. "If we have a problem here, then the whole world would really have to fight the Orc War again."
Greed pursed his lips and said, "Of course, I just find it a bit strange."
"Me too," Jesse nodded.
