Chapter 416: Unwilling Heart
Saan reacted quickly, creating a wall of ice to block the entrance. Shivan crashed into the ice wall, slashing at it with her sword, but then several crossbow arrows swiftly shot towards her, hitting her in the back.
The female demon ripped out the arrow from her arm and turned around, only to see several soldiers surrounding her. Just as she raised her blade to attack the enemies in front of her, Amy cast a spell that slowed down her arm, stopping her in her tracks.
Shivan glanced towards Amy, and another mage also cast a slowing spell. Shivan tried to break free from the arcane magic by chanting a spell, but Master Saan promptly used a Counterspell to interrupt her.
Meanwhile, Amy launched a Frostbolt that froze Shivan’s arms within her armor. Jesse followed with a Fireball that hit her chest, causing her to cough as blood trickled from the shards of ice that pierced her arm.
Enraged, Shivan let out a roar and cast a Blink Spell towards them, determined to turn the tide.
Compared to the demon’s speed, Jesse’s attempt to flee was painfully slow. He quickly prepared a Shadow Shield spell for protection.
Before he could finish casting the spell, Shivan used another Blink Spell to appear a few meters behind Jesse. Did this woman have no cooldown on her Blink Spell!?
Shivan lunged with her sword, but Jesse reacted swiftly, blocking with his Azuresong Mageblade, breaking the demon’s sword.
He quickly stepped back to avoid Shivan’s other arm swinging down, but couldn’t dodge the stab of the third arm, getting hit in the shoulder and chest.
Jesse felt a sharp numbness in his shoulder, as if all the air had been let out of him, causing him to stagger back a few steps.
The female demon chuckled triumphantly after delivering the three strikes, her laughter sounding like multiple demons laughing together.
She adjusted her stance to prepare for a second round of attack when suddenly a flurry of ice spikes shot up from below, quickly freezing her lower body in place.
"Annoying female mage…"
Shivan struggled to break free from a chunk of ice and stepped forward, but before she could catch her breath, the soldiers had surrounded her.
She swung her sword at one of the soldiers, blocked by a shield, then another soldier slashed her raised arm. Shivan screamed as another soldier swiftly chopped off one of her legs, and a soldier with a long weapon ruthlessly stabbed her down to the ground.
After the chaotic slashing and stabbing, the fierce female demon who was raging just a moment ago fell silent, her flames extinguished from her crown.
Despite Shivan’s ferocity, being surrounded by three and a half mages and about a dozen soldiers proved too much, and if a few succubi had joined the fray earlier, the situation might not have been so easy.
The soldier who was stabbed in the back unfortunately died, while the other injured soldiers, though in varying degrees of pain, could at least scream in agony.
Captain Mac Laren, along with the soldiers who came to help, carried the wounded out. Once outside, even the eerie wind blowing from the Dark Portal made everyone feel much relieved.
Jesse glanced at the wound on his shoulder, it was not light. It hurt so much that his ears were throbbing, but compared to others, it wasn’t that bad.
Thinking about the Shadowflame he had just cast, he glanced at the reactions of the other mages.
In fact, he only resorted to using Shadow Magic when he saw that the Shivan seemed to be losing control, taking advantage of the shadow power everywhere, feeling that his magic would not be easily detected.
The other mages did not pay much attention to him. The mage who had followed him and Amy into the leftmost corridor came over to ask about his injuries.
He pondered whether teaming up with Molofeel and Saenor, using Shadow Magic to its fullest, could deal with the Shivan.
Perhaps using a Shadow Shield to block attacks, relying on Molofeel for a surprise attack. If the Shivan attacked her, with Molofeel’s agility and imp’s Blood Pact, they could restrain the demon for a while, then using Gorefiend’s Grasp to tear the demon’s arm… As he thought about it, he began to realize he was feeling a bit resentful, especially after being in such a sorry state after the fight with the female demon.
After all, this was a battlefield, with so many mages, soldiers, even Paladins and priests around. At most, he could only sneak in some subtle Shadow Magic attacks, like a Weakness Spell, when no one was paying attention.
Hesitating to use powerful spells like Gorefiend’s Grasp or Shadow Shield in a grand manner.
So he had to stop his thoughts from spreading further and clear his mind of random thoughts.
"How’s your injury, Jesse?" Amy asked as she approached. "Let me take a look?"
Jesse covered up his wound with his cloak and said, "It’s nothing, just a scratch, not deep."
Amy handed over her Healing Potion saying, "Drink this, Jesse, just to be safe. I don’t need it for now."
Jesse nodded and drank the potion. As the other mages went down to help clean up the battlefield, he turned to the female mage beside him and said, "Amy, you really deserve to be promoted to a full mage now!"
He sincerely admired Amy, who despite appearing delicate, remained calm like a seasoned warrior when facing the female demon. Each spell she cast and every magic she used was done with great composure.
Amy looked at the demon’s body being dragged away and said, "I felt really scared, panicking… I’ve never seen a demon like that before, she was too fast. I kept thinking about using the Blink Spell, but she could use it too… It was really dangerous."
"If you call that being scared, then I hope I get scared every time I face such trouble," Jesse said. "If you hadn’t frozen that female demon with your magic in time, I would’ve been chopped to pieces!"
"How is that possible," said Amy. "You can go a few rounds with that demon just using that sword, while others can’t even handle one hit. Sometimes I think you might be better suited to join the Silver Hand. Have you seen those Silver Hand Knights fight? You remind me of those swordsmen blessed by the Holy Light."
Jesse sighed and said, "It’s a shame the church won’t accept someone like me who isn’t devout enough. And wasn’t the main reason for meeting your dad to earn money? I guess it’s time for the June salary!"
"You still have the nerve to ask for a salary?" Amy said in surprise. "Even though we hired someone else for daily cleaning chores, as my assistant, you still need to help my dad organize the articles. I’ve been doing it all before we came to Nethergarde!"
"Oh, my shoulder is starting to hurt!" Jesse quickly said. "I need a priest…"
Amy pinched his face and said, "Let me help this guy shift his focus…"
