Chapter 414: The Mine
The intense battle had just ended. Jesse just realized that his hands were still slightly trembling. He didn’t know if it was the shock of facing the countless Demon Guards, or if the excitement of close combat had kept him heated up until now.
The soldiers below were clearing the battlefield, searching for their comrades’ bodies among the demon corpses, or for companions who were injured but not yet dead.
The fierce blizzard that had helped delay the demon’s advance and reveal the succubus had now become an obstacle to rescue. The entire battlefield was covered with a thick layer of snow, everyone’s pants and boots were soaking wet.
It seemed like there weren’t too many casualties, but most of the few hundred to nearly a thousand people here had different degrees of injuries. Even though Jesse hadn’t been directly harmed by any demons, he felt a bit of a burning sensation on his facial skin. Amy, beside him, was breathing heavily as she looked at the gate destroyed by Hellfire, her face also slightly scorched.
The consequences of being burned by evil fire are much more serious than normal burns, and can cause more complications like skin ulceration, necrosis, or even more serious internal organ diseases.
But compared to death or disability, most people here are not even concerned about these things.
"Jesse, are you hurt?" Amy asked.
Jesse brushed off the snow-wet dust on his shoulder and said, "Impossible, not even a Death Knight can kill me!"
Amy replied, "I remember, last night I kept saying that I would protect you!"
"We protect each other," Jesse said. "I can’t let anything happen to you, Amy."
Amy smiled and looked up, Jesse followed her gaze.
Several officers who were not badly injured were leading a group of soldiers and miners towards the mine entrance, with a few mages following behind.
"Do they think a succubus has entered the mine?" Amy asked.
Jesse nodded and said, "Let’s go check it out."
The two people ran towards the high ground. Even though Jesse had used a lot of energy in the battle earlier and was starting to feel tired, he couldn’t relax because he knew there were demons nearby.
Amy asked curiously, "How did you see those demons? I saw you wave your magic wand in the air, and I thought you hadn’t seen anything clearly. But then you managed to hit that succubus out of the shadow, as if their invisibility couldn’t fool you."
"Have you smelled the sweet fragrance in the air? It’s like a strange perfume," Jesse said.
Amy tried to smell it and said, "It seems like it, but I can’t describe it."
"That’s the smell of succubus," Jesse said. "As for hitting it so accurately… It was just a guess. I didn’t expect to hit the demon right away."
Amy nodded and followed Jesse to the entrance of the mine. There were about a hundred people gathered there. A Lordaeron lieutenant holding a helmet looked at a foreman behind him and asked, "Are there still people inside?"
"There are a few tool keepers inside," the foreman said.
"Tool keepers?" The lieutenant shook his head and said, "At a time like this, why worry about tools? Get a few mages and shield-bearing infantry to watch over here. Let’s go in and see. I can almost smell the foul odor of demons here!"
"Is there any wizard willing to go in with me?" He looked this way.
Jesse, Amy, and several wizards responded in succession.
The lieutenant looked at Jesse and said, "I noticed you earlier, wizard. You are indeed skilled at dealing with demons. From your performance, I believe you can track demons. If you can guarantee that you can sense when a demon is sneaking past you, then I will let you join Captain Mac Laren’s team."
Jesse nodded and said, "I can do it."
The lieutenant immediately said, "Sergeant Mc Laren, take this wizard with you. Mr. Drien, come with me. Master Norris, take Mr. Saan with you. He is a student of Master Dumas and is also good at tracking demons. We will split into three groups, following the tracks of the mine carts and meet at the resting chamber in the deepest part of the mine."
The leading captains nodded in agreement, and the infantrymen behind them drew their swords.
The lieutenant turned to the soldiers at the entrance of the cave and said, "Each group consists of around seven to eight people. The rest of you keep watch here and make sure those darn thieves don’t escape. We can’t bring too many people inside because the most important thing is to be prepared for a demon counterattack. They could come back up at any time."
After the arrangements were made, Jesse followed Captain Mac Laren into the mine, with Amy at the front holding a magic wand with a bright blue gem using a Light Spell. The light was warm and stable, much stronger than the flickering light Jesse produced, which was like a poorly lit candle flame.
Despite that, as they walked along some long tunnels further in, the complete darkness at the deepest part made it difficult for some to see clearly.
Amy walked with confident steps, moving forward steadily, while the soldiers behind her holding shields and swords seemed to hesitate at times, tense with the darkness ahead, as if they were trying to see something hidden.
Jesse focused intently ahead, ready to use a Scorch Curse spell to blast any succubus that might come near, to protect Amy from harm.
Despite walking deep into the tunnel, they didn’t see any demons around, but the scent of succubus lingered in the air throughout the passage.
After walking carefully for about ten to twenty minutes, a figure suddenly appeared within the range of the Light Spell. It was a middle-aged man sweating profusely, blocking the light with his arm and saying, "Finally someone has come… there are demons inside!"
"Did you see demons?!" Captain Mac Laren asked, "Did they go deeper, or where did they go?"
"I… I don’t know, they might be hiding, lurking around," the middle-aged miner replied, "I wasn’t discovered by them in the storage room at the resting place behind."
Mac Laren grabbed his neck, took a closer look, then asked the three mages behind, "We don’t have a priest, do any of you have a way to tell if this man has been Charmed?"
The miner seemed puzzled by the term "Charm," Jesse walked over and said, "I can try to check."
Jesse approached and examined the miner’s eyes closely, noticing some murky shadowy traces. By now, he could also smell the strong scent of succubus emanating from the miner, much stronger than the faint scent in the air.
"He was charmed," Jesse said. "At least succubus has already dealt with him, Captain Mac Laren."
