Chapter 412: Evil Descends From the Skies
The group reached a bare stone bridge when suddenly, a gryphon flew across the sky. The Gryphon Rider circled around and landed next to the Knight Captain at the front, speaking urgently. Jesse, who was at the back of the group, couldn’t quite hear what was said.
The knights quickly arrived at the back, shouting, "The scouts have spotted demons heading towards the mine, we must hurry!"
After rushing for who knows how long, the reinforcements finally saw the mining mountain. There were some simple wooden walls and wooden towers. Jesse worried if these wooden structures could withstand the demons’ fiery attacks, as there were many fire-breathing demons.
The mine was abandoned, with a group of workers sitting nearby, looking serious and armed with weapons like chisels, axes, hammers, all ready for battle.
With nearly a thousand defenders and guards stationed firmly at the camp near the mine entrance, a few commanders nervously organized their formations. The mages positioned themselves on high ground as planned.
Once the arrangements were made, Jesse, Amy, and a few mages stood looking towards the dark horizon. They glanced at the crossbowmen and archers near the wooden walls, a mass of soldiers with only a few commanders giving dry orders, almost drowned out by the rumbling thunder in the sky.
"I’ve never been in a battle like this before," whispered a young mage from behind.
"You can think of the demons charging later as teachers wanting your homework – it might make it easier," suggested an older mage.
There were a few chuckles around them. Jesse remarked, "I was supposed to see my teacher this morning, now I’m facing demons instead. Not sure which is more troublesome."
A soldier with a shield sitting nearby raised his head and said, "At least you don’t have to meet two of them at once, brother."
Jesse couldn’t help but laugh, which caused another round of laughter among the mages. Amy also laughed happily, but after the laughter subsided, the silence became even more uncomfortable.
Suddenly, a mage beside them said, "Can you smell it? The scent of demonic fire. Those demons are coming."
Jesse sniffed and indeed detected the smell of dark magic, but…
He looked up at the sky, and the dark clouds unexpectedly began to glow.
Could it be… that thing?!
"Look at the sky!" Jesse immediately shouted, "Quick, look up at the sky!"
"What is that?!"
"It’s meteor magic! Don’t gather, spread out and be ready to dodge at any time!"
When Jesse heard the meteor magic, he saw the sky rumbling and rolling with green flames. Before long, a meteor was vomited out by the rolling dark clouds and smashed straight towards the gate, with a piercing screech of fel magic as it streaked across the sky.
"Everyone near the gate, get away!" shouted a knight. "People on the tower over there, come down."
The shouting was quickly drowned out by the deafening sound of the falling meteor. The crossbowmen and mages on a tower in front quickly ran down the stairs, with one even leaping out and using a Blink Spell to jump to the ground.
The meteor hit the empty space behind the gate directly, sending a wave of hot, foul-smelling air sweeping over the barren land, causing a sharp pain as it scratched Jesse’s cheeks and arms.
The shockwave from the explosion of the magic flames in the distance knocked two slow-running soldiers to the ground. A nearby wooden watchtower was blown apart and set on fire.
The commander was yelling something, but it was impossible to hear amidst the roaring explosion of fel magic, which drowned out all other sounds. Jesse could only see him shouting in waves of black and green smoke, but it was as if he had been muted.
However, this was far from the end. Between the burning wooden walls, several huge stones seemed to be conjured out of thin air, combining in the air to form a powerful stone giant. This sight reminded Jesse of the earth elementals encountered in the Badlands, but this was clearly a super-sized, enhanced version – Hellfire!
The black stone giant, burning with green fire, stood up in the blazing flames and let out a fierce howl at the group of human soldiers in front of it, causing their ears to ring painfully for hundreds of meters around. Before fully forming, it stepped into flames, moving towards the formation of soldiers. Reaching out as it ran, the giant continued to gather up the scattered boulders until it held the last one in its hand, throwing it towards a group of mages nearby. However, in mid-air, the rock was shattered into pieces by a burst of Arcane energy.
"Mages, kill this demon!"
A mage wearing a formal mage ring raised a long staff and pointed at Hellfire, shouting loudly. With this shout, the scattered mages who were just hit by an explosion immediately came to their senses.
Soon, beams of Arcane light brought by Slow Spells wrapped around different parts of Hellfire like chains, but the giant still managed to resist the mages’ magic and advance step by step.
The soldiers at the front hesitated, as the opponent was a towering four-meter-tall giant, while they could barely reach his knees. How could they withstand the mad charge of such a monster?
"Ah! Bless me, Holy Light!"
One soldier shouted, and a rifleman standing at the front attempted to stab the giant’s feet. As his weapon touched the stone surface, he immediately caught fire with unholy flames!
The burning soldier screamed, shaking the resistance of the other soldiers on the front line. Many even began to flee backward, causing the formation to become increasingly chaotic, on the verge of collapse. The situation of the Hellfire giant was no better. Frostbolts rained down accurately hitting every giant stone on his body, making each step incredibly difficult. The flames on his body extinguished as if doused with water.
The Fire Mages finally came into play. In this scorching wasteland, fire magic was significantly enhanced. After the icy magic extinguished the flames on Hellfire, even though he was no longer afraid of burning flames, the explosion power of fireballs could directly shatter the magical stones forming his body.
Jesse also began to chant spells, aiming at the sluggish feet of Hellfire, and released a Fireball. Before long, one of Hellfire’s legs collapsed from the repeated Arcane Missiles and fireballs, causing the entire giant to topple to one side.
A group of armed miners who helped maintain the front line rushed forward wielding chisels and hammers, smashing the stone giant, which was still trying to counterattack, into a pile of rubble.
But a Hellfire can never appear out of nowhere, it must have been summoned by magic, which means the real enemy is still ahead!
This Hellfire is only used to break through defenses!
"Find your own position! Get back to your position!"
The horse-riding officer shouted at the miners and soldiers, but at that moment, several shadows appeared behind the fire…
