Chapter 410: Nethergarde
Nethergarde was quite large in scale, as this fortress was part of the Alliance’s rebuilding plan. Many nations, including elves and dwarves, contributed funds to build this "last fortress" meant to "defend Azeroth and guard the Dark Portal."
Walking up this vast hillside, Jesse felt incredibly small. The walls of Nethergarde stood tall like a gray cliff, with a towering Mage Tower on it. The flag of the Kirin Tor fluttered atop it, bearing the emblem of The Violet Eye gazing southward, like a true lookout watching over the land.
Jesse couldn’t believe how a scary huge fortress was built in just a few years.
It is said that mages from Quel’Thalas and Dalaran were helping to build the castle quickly so it could protect the world forever.
It was clear that its first test was coming soon.
As the cavalry arrived at the gate of Nethergarde, Jesse looked back towards the Dark Portal. Through the dead trees and endless hills, he could see a small green light in the pitch-black shadow in the distance.
"That’s the Dark Portal!" a Stromgarde soldier said to Jesse, "Do you see that light? That’s the Dark Portal, you can see the door from here…"
Another soldier remarked, "The door is very low, this poor land can’t handle the power it releases. I feel like it’s lower than when we first started building the castle."
"But that’s a good thing," another soldier added, "It lets us maintain a high ground advantage against the demons coming out of the door."
As he spoke, even he sounded a bit unsure.
When the convoy arrived at the square in Nethergarde, many soldiers came to help with unloading.
Nethergarde was really busy, with many horse-drawn carriages parked in the square, most of them coming from the Kingdom of Stormwind because goods from other kingdoms were also transported through Stormwind’s port to here.
The square was dusty, with a scent of something burnt lingering in the air. There was also a constant smell of fel magic and shadows, but fortunately not as strong as imagined.
Looking around, there were huge fortresses, towers, stables, and houses interconnected. Further away, the barracks looked like small castles, not smaller in scale than any fortress Jesse had seen elsewhere.
The scale here was like a small town, with immensely thick city walls, towers capable of firing crossbows and cannons, surrounding the small city. It could be called a true stronghold of the end times.
Jesse could hear soldiers in the distance practicing their slogans. He didn’t know where these soldiers were training, maybe behind the city walls where a part of the training grounds was located, meaning Nethergarde was even bigger than it seemed.
Looking up, there were gryphon nests placed on the city walls, with many gryphons dozing inside.
Jesse saw so many gryphons for the first time. He tried hard to spot Greed among those dwarves.
Of course, it was impossible as the dwarves wore goggles, draped in large robes, and either had hair or beard showing. Even if they were lined up in front of Jesse, he wouldn’t recognize who was who.
Not to mention that Greed might not have found the organization yet, perhaps discussing how to join the Ironforge army with the Ironforge ambassador in Stormwind.
"Mages, come with me."
A young official mage held up his green gem magic wand and said.
Jesse packed up his belongings and followed the official mage, along with some familiar faces in the Wizard’s Sanctum, heading towards the beautiful Mage Tower.
Many mages were already waiting on the ground of the Mage Tower, and Jesse immediately spotted the female mage standing at the front.
"Amy! Amy Malin!"
Jesse approached and called out, catching Amy’s attention as she turned to look over, eyes widening immediately.
"Jesse?" Amy quickly squeezed past a few mages to reach Jesse, saying, "You finally made it!"
She looked much slimmer than when they had dinner together two months ago. She was never considered chubby, but now she looked even thinner, like a stick.
In this dark and relentless wind, it felt like she could topple over at any moment.
But when she saw Jesse’s appearance, she looked him up and down, her initial look of excitement suddenly turned into disappointment.
"What happened to your clothes, it looks like they’ve been burned, did you encounter enemies?"
"I encountered demons," Jesse said. "But I’m fine, how about you?"
Amy said, "A week ago when the demons first appeared, I faced some trouble, I joined the mages from Kirin Tor in several battles against the demons, but I wasn’t hurt much, the warriors here took good care of us."
"But my father participated in a mission to help Dreadmaul Keep two days ago…"
"Is he injured?" Jesse couldn’t help but ask directly.
"No," Amy said. "He probably used too much magic and hasn’t rested yet. Kirin Tor wanted him to help with the defense of this Mage Tower, but he always forgets how old he is and doesn’t take care of himself."
"I want to go see him," Jesse said.
"He’s already asleep, let’s not disturb him," Amy said. "He’ll be very happy to see you when he wakes up tomorrow morning. Let me first take you to eat something, since you just arrived in Nethergarde, you must try the special food here…"
"What special foods will they have in this place?" Jesse asked in surprise.
Amy said mysteriously, "Insects! And with a hint of the warm taste of Holy Light. Where else can you taste such divine cooking, food roasted by Sacred Fire, you won’t even find in the Cathedral of Light!"
Jesse asked, "Have the priests all become chefs now?"
Amy smiled and said, "Almost, even if they haven’t actually become chefs, they have participated in the cooking process. After all, the animals here are all tainted with fel magic, priests are not allowed to handle them, so where else can we get so much meat? Stormwind’s supplies are often insufficient, especially now that we are at war. Carrion worms, evil giant scorpions, still taste good…"
"Oh my…" Jesse sighed.
"Don’t complain!" Amy scolded him, saying, "Either go eat the delicious food made by the mages…"
Jesse glanced at Amy’s almost skeletal arms, and could only nod.
