Chapter 407: Fireball
Before the sun had risen the next day, Jesse and Fyodor came to a stream outside the camp’s wooden wall, where they could even hear frogs croaking in the distance.
Jesse was a bit surprised because when he followed the Paladin’s team into the depths of the swamp yesterday, he didn’t remember hearing frogs or any insects in the swamp.
Also, the smell of fel magic in the air is not as strong as it was yesterday when we arrived here.
Fyodor cast an Arcane Intellect spell on himself, picked up a magic wand with a red magic amber, looked at Jesse and said, "You may have seen some pretty powerful fire magic before, so please don’t make fun of me, Mr. Jesse Seso. My fire magic may not be that great, but at least I am very familiar with spells, casting gestures, chanting methods, and so on."
"How could I make fun of you," Jesse cast an Arcane Intellect spell on himself and said, "After all, I have never learned…"
"Well then," Fyodor took a deep breath and said, "Listen carefully, the incantation for the Fireball spell is quite long…"
He waved his fingers back and forth at the tip of the magic wand, guiding and chanting, "Elde’mensamarus, Lun’el’mig…"
Jesse watched as the Arcane energy at the tip of his fingers began to gather into clumps of smoky flames. He recalled from his knowledge of fire magic that if the fire element gathered emitted black smoke, it was a sign of difficulties in casting the spell.
Fyodor also realized this issue and took a deep breath, concentrating hard. He gritted his teeth and continued, "Bar’bad’relan, Main’ien’fend…"
By this point, a swirling ball of intense flames had gathered between his hand and the gem on the magic wand. He then roared and sent the fireball flying, which splashed into the water with a thud, creating a spray of mud that caused both of them to step back to avoid.
"Your turn," he gasped, "Casting a Fireball like this is still a bit challenging for me… Whether it’s energy consumption or something else, I feel that I can only manage to cast four or five at most."
"I’m not sure if I can do it," Jesse said as he walked ahead.
"Don’t be too modest, Mr. Seso. After all, modesty and fire magic are completely opposite elements. Do you know why elf fire magic is so powerful? There’s a reason for that," Fyodor said as he took out a little notebook from his bag and flipped to a page, handing it to Jesse. "This is my spellbook. This one is Fireball, and below there are some tips for casting. You can use your magic wand to help cast it, it’s much more effective than casting with empty hands."
Fyodor glanced at the tightly wrapped Gorefiend staff that Jesse held and added, "Of course, as long as your magic wand is a fire magic wand."
Jesse had a fire magic wand, but he sold it as he had an Azuresong Mageblade now.
"Let me try casting without a wand, since I am still in the practice stage," Jesse said. He then repeated the spell from the notebook several times, took a deep breath, and felt the connection to the Ley Line here.
Casting fire spells should be no problem for him.
After reviewing the spell one last time and silently chanting it again, he began to say, "Eldensar…"
Following the instructions in the notebook, one hand up, one hand down, the lower hand acting as a "tray" instead of Fyodor’s magic wand, guiding the Arcane to gather fire elements as the upper hand mimicked Fyodor.
Before long, the flames seemed to expand as if they were responding to his command.
Jesse actually felt a bit of something similar when casting Mage Armor before. Back then, the fire element summoned formed a protective shell with flame resistance around him, but this time, the fire element felt much wilder.
Just as he thought about it, the flames in his hand disappeared.
"It’s normal for the first try, Jesse," Fyodor said. "Do you need me to demonstrate again?"
"I got a little distracted just now," Jesse said. "Let me try again."
Fireball isn’t a complicated spell, at least much simpler compared to Mage Armor. After catching his breath, he focused on gathering fire element and finally conjured a burning little fireball in his palm after reciting the spell, making his hand burn.
Jesse immediately threw the entire fireball, causing it to explode by the shore, creating a cloud of black smoke and flipping up some soil.
"Definitely Master Malin’s student!" Fyodor said. "Jesse Seso, you must say that it was me, Fyodor Dostoevsky, who taught you Fireball from now on!"
"No problem," Jesse agreed right away.
Somehow, throwing out such a Fireball brought a special feeling of satisfaction. This was his first time learning such a specific energy-molding magic.
Of course, the strange scene of the Shadow Snakes gathering and biting each other at The Hand of Gul’dan, as well as the destructive power of dark forces that followed, seemed a bit beyond Jesse’s understanding of regular magic.
"I wonder if I can go to Nethergarde at this level," he muttered quietly.
"You really want to go to Nethergarde," Fyodor shook his head. "I’m not sure, you can ask, they didn’t let me go at my level either. I’m a bit hungry, do you want to go back and get something to eat?"
"I will practice here by myself, Fyodor, you can go back," Jesse said. "Thank you for teaching me this spell."
"For an apprentice mage, this is nothing," Fyodor said. "I’ll go now, just remember not to practice too much and exhaust yourself, Jesse Seso."
Saying that, Fyodor headed back towards the wooden wall, while Jesse walked a few hundred meters further to a completely deserted place.
He picked up the magic wand and, following Fyodor’s example, began chanting spells to guide Fireball with the wand, no longer suppressing his shadow power.
The shadow power quickly merged into the summoned fire element, and Jesse could even sense the Arcane energy coming from Ley Lines becoming a bit chaotic due to the sudden intrusion of shadow.
The shadow frantically gathered more wild fires and turned them into volatile black flames, but all under Jesse’s control, after all, in the Scorch Curse… he was already familiar with this kind of situation.
Jesse kept guiding the darkening fireball, which grew bigger and bigger until the light from the Shadow Gem couldn’t be contained and seeped through the yellow cloth.
His cheeks could feel the fierce radiation of shadow and flames, not to mention his hands at this moment.
Without hesitation, he threw the Shadowfire ball away and used his magic wand to direct it to explode into a stream, causing a violent explosion that collapsed the nearby hillside, flipping up tree roots one after another. The big tree connected to these roots nearby tilted slightly, and its canopy swayed as a result.
As the explosion subsided, the burning Shadowfire flames quickly charred and decayed the bushes and tree roots. Jesse watched everything in front of him, panting, thinking that the shadow was still more impressive.
