Chapter 406: Meeting the New Teacher
Returning to Stonard in the evening, Jesse brought the wounded to the priest. He stayed in this Orc den, assisting the priest and Paladins in rescuing the injured and the sick.
After all, he didn’t know many healing spells. Even when he tried to use the Azuresong Mageblade to create water, he only ended up puncturing the containers. Many mages capable of summoning clean water sources were diligently casting spells, so there was no need for him to cause chaos.
However, at least he could help carry the wounded and the supplies needed by the priests, such as potions and bandages. At the very least, he could be of some use.
To pitch in with the work, he took off his robes and wore only a white undershirt that no one else was wearing, helping a group of soldiers with Arathi accents move things around.
While working, Jesse couldn’t stop thinking about the words the Elf Ranger told him, wondering how the Blue Dragon Madrigosa’s sword ended up under Blackrock Mountain.
In the game, the Azuresong Mageblade is a drop from the raid dungeon "Molten Core" in Blackrock Mountain. This beautiful demon sword seems out of place in a list of drops closely related to fire and lava.
Maybe during the scourge attack on Quel’Thalas, the Windrunner village was completely destroyed by the undead, and after Sylvanas was killed… Perhaps trolls or other exiles looted Windrunner’s treasury while it was in chaos and somehow ended up down south.
Or perhaps the drop list is just for gameplay, and the items are actually rewards for "killing this target"? Anyway, now that the sword is in his hands, Jesse can no longer know what happened to it in another timeline.
Soon after, Barry Fred, the official mage left by Malin to organize the mages’ work, arrived and called out, "Jesse Seso… Is Jesse Seso here?"
"Here!"
Jesse raised his hand in response, quickly putting on his robe. Fred looked at Jesse and raised an eyebrow, saying, "I don’t recognize you at all, Mr. Seso…"
"Is there any work, Mr. Fred," Jesse said, running his sweaty hand through his hair.
Fred said, "It’s not about work. Captain Quinton told me about you, he said you showed great bravery. I will report your assistance to The Silver Hand Knights honestly to Master Andromath and Master Malin, which will surely help you become an official mage in the future!"
"Thank you so much, Mr. Fred," said Jesse.
"There’s one more thing," Fred said, "All the other mages have seen their living quarters already, and I will take you to see yours. Of course, it may not be as nice as the apartments in Wizard’s Sanctum, but having a place to sleep in The Black Morass is already good, right?"
Jesse followed Fred into a large beast den deep in Stonard. Orcs like to build deep, with the lowest level resembling a semi-basement; even though you enter from flat ground, you have to walk down some steps to get to the bottom, and it is dark so you can’t see clearly even with torches.
Entering a black passage in the Orc den, looking into the narrow little cave, the whole floor was covered with hay mats, looking even more primitive compared to Stormwind’s underground prison.
But Jesse could feel the presence of arcane magic here, there wasn’t much of a foul smell, nor was there dust apart from the earth.
"Three mages live in this place, Mr. Jesse Seso," Fred said, "I live in the opposite stone room in this passage, just keep going straight and you will find me. If you have any trouble, you can tell me, and I will inform the Knight Captain."
After Fred left, Jesse lay on the mat for a while before leaving the beast den to continue helping the priest.
After eating dinner at night and returning to the den, Jesse found another mage sitting there already.
The person had their back towards Jesse, seemingly organizing something. Jesse peeked inside and said, "Hello."
"Hello, my roommate," said Jesse as he turned to look at Mage, who seemed to be around the same age and was just bandaging his wound.
"Are you injured?" Jesse asked.
"Yes," the young mage nodded and said, "That darn Felhound."
Jesse unbuttoned his shirt and said, "Look, I also got bitten by a Felhound."
"Ha!" the mage chuckled and said, "So, is this the Felhound victims’ ward?"
Jesse couldn’t help but chuckle too, sat down, and then realized that the mage’s entire leg was covered in bloody bite marks from the Felhound, looking quite gruesome, causing Jesse to instinctively blink.
"Pretty scary, huh?" the young mage sighed and then said, "Fyodor Dostoevsky, nice to meet you…"
"Jesse," Jesse said, "Jesse Seso."
"Jesse Seso?" the mage glanced at Jesse’s ring and asked, "Are you the Seso?"
Jesse sat on a grass cushion and said, "I should be the only Seso in the Wizard’s Sanctum."
The mage asked, "I heard someone say you defeated that Death Knight, Teron Gorefiend… Is it true? I thought you were a Battle Mage in your thirties, but you don’t look much older than me."
Jesse realized that the news of defeating Teron Gorefiend was spreading everywhere, more and more people were starting to know about it, although some might not know his name, and some might not know the details of how it happened…
"It’s true," he said leaning against the wall.
The mage asked again, "Tell me, how did you defeat him?"
Jesse replied, "It definitely wasn’t a fair one-on-one duel where I defeated him… You make it sound like I can defeat a leader of a tribe like an archmage. But in reality, I don’t even know how to cast a Fireball now, and if I could, I would have ridden a gryphon to Nethergarde long ago."
"Ah, Nethergarde…" Fyodor said with a wry smile, "When I first arrived here today, I was also hoping to go to Nethergarde, but after a day of battle, I’m having second thoughts now."
Jesse asked, "What mission did you join today?"
Fyodor replied, "A group of demons had taken over the highlands on the way to Nethergarde from here, and I joined Commander Abidis’ team to reclaim that area… hoping to secure the passage to Nethergarde again."
Is Admiral Abbidius in charge?
Jesse was startled when he heard the name, later the Scarlet Crusade, a fanatical organization aimed at restoring Lordaeron and wiping out the Scourge, was founded by Admiral Abbidius after the fall of Lordaeron to the Scourge. During the Orc War, he also served as Marshal Alexandros Mograine’s deputy.
Fyodor said, "Although we have won, many people died and many were injured, those demons… darn it, I don’t want to remember that scene anymore."
He applied some herbs to his leg, sucking in a breath from the pain, then said, "I really don’t know what the situation is like over at Nethergarde, I heard the Dark Portal’s energy has turned the south into a withered dead land, all living beings have died… even some half-dead, driven by fel magic corpses."
Jesse couldn’t even imagine corpses driven by fel magic.
In the game, after Brutallus was killed by the army that reclaimed the Sunwell, the demonic blood flowing out of his body contaminated Madrigosa, turning the blue dragon’s body into an undead fel magic dragon.
"I reckon I’ll be in too much pain to sleep tonight." Fyodor glanced at the bandage on Jesse’s abdomen and asked, "You got stabbed in the belly and don’t feel pain? Are you even human?"
"It hurts," Jesse frowned and said, "Why do you bring it up…"
Fyodor laughed and said, "Let’s talk about something else, Jesse. You must be familiar with Mrs. Vereesa Windrunner, right? You killed Teron Gorefiend with her…"
"Yes," Jesse sighed as he leaned his head back against the cold wall, taking a breath.
"Is she pretty?" Fyodor asked, "From your point of view."
"Saying she’s not pretty would definitely be a lie," Jesse thought for a moment, and said, "I’ve never seen a more beautiful elf than her."
Fyodor raised an eyebrow and said, "I envy you, going into a dangerous demon nest to assassinate the enemy leader with the beautiful Quel’dorai. You’ve turned the scenes I often imagine into reality. But even if Mrs. Vereesa Windrunner invited me to hunt down that undead monster, I might not dare to go."
"Who said that, you’re the one who came to Stonard?" Jesse thought for a moment and said, "Besides, when she first asked me to come, it wasn’t to go with her to kill Teron Gorefiend…"
Fyodor cleared his throat and said, "Many historical figures who achieved great feats didn’t initially want to take the path they eventually did. But they still went, no matter what."
"Maybe I’m chatting with a future hero right now. Actually, being able to kill Gorefiend already makes you a hero. In the future, more and more people will know about you. There will be poets writing your story, teaching those songs to be sung in inns around the world…"
Listening to Fyodor’s praise, Jesse’s thoughts began to drift away.
He thought about the rainy day when he was ambushed by Greed and the Gnolls led by Hogger, waking up in Goldshire, hearing the song about the fallen Alliance commander Anduin Lothar. He wondered how he would feel if he was in Lothar’s place.
Jesse Seso’s legend…feels awkward to think about, like my name doesn’t fit with great stories.
"By the way, Jesse," Fyodor said, "You said you can’t do Fireball, isn’t your teacher Master Malin, the most powerful fire mage in the Wizard’s Sanctum?"
"I haven’t been keeping up with my studies…" Jesse said helplessly.
"I’ll teach you the spell," Fyodor said. "I know the Fireball spell. Let’s wake up early tomorrow morning and practice casting spells outside. How does that sound to you?"
"Really?" Jesse asked.
"If it’s not true, why would I be making things up here?" Fyodor said excitedly. "I can’t believe I’m going to teach Jesse Seso how to do Fireball. Oh my! Don’t forget me in the future!"
