Chapter 404: The Demon Tamer
Following the sounds and the magical light emanating from the forest where a fierce battle was taking place, they saw a dark figure ahead wielding an unknown weapon.
Nearby, a soldier was fighting bare-handed against a Felhound. The elf shot an arrow to pierce the Felhound’s body, saving the soldier. The soldier took a few breaths, picked up his weapon, but his shield was nowhere to be found.
In the forest before them, soldiers were working together to deal with groups of Felhounds and imps. The elf immediately joined them.
Jesse continued forward, using a Scorch Curse to blast a Felhound that had lost two legs and was dragging itself along the ground. With his magic wand, he viciously struck another Felhound from behind as it attempted to sneak up on a soldier. However, his focus was always on the looming dark figure.
Over a little stream, he glanced at a helmet on the ground, crushed, with a human body covered in blood lying in the stream. Suddenly, a demon growled, and the dark figure revealed itself.
It was a huge monster, about three meters tall, with ink-blue skin. Its eyes were like wild fires, emitting thick smoke. It wore a half-helmet chained into its flesh, strange armor made of chains and plates, and carried a long-handled hammer and a whip-like iron chain. It swung them at an enemy hidden behind a slope.
Jesse climbed a small hill and saw two soldiers lying down nearby. One seemed dead, while the other dragged their injured body towards a tree. Felhounds were crazily roaming around.
The soldiers were occupied with small monsters and couldn’t handle the tall Mo’arg demon. Facing the Mo’arg, there was only one person – Captain Quinton in blue clothes.
He wore a simple shirt, holding his long-handled hammer that gleamed with a brilliant golden light. The massive demon was overshadowed by the Paladin, a cleric swinging a warhammer.
"I have never seen the Holy Light favor me so much, you ugly thing," dodging the demon’s chain strikes, the Paladin gritted his teeth, "Even the merciful Holy Light wishes for me to smash your foul-smelling face quickly…"
"Too much talk, mortal. The Holy Light can’t save you."
The demon chuckled, stepped forward, and swung the iron whip again. The Paladin stepped back, and the whip struck the ground, splattering mud everywhere.
Jesse ran down the hill, raised the demon sword, and chanted the Scorch Curse. A bright flame exploded from the demon’s head, knocking off its heavy helmet with a clatter, making the chain sway.
The demon coughed and stumbled forward, its skin on the face and neck wrinkling from the heat. Seeing an opportunity, the Paladin took a few steps forward and swung his warhammer with all his strength at the demon’s thigh. The demon, without even looking, deflected the hammer with a flick, causing a bright light to spark when the two hammers clashed, annoying the demon.
Jesse looked at the dark shadow and whispered a weak spell, then pointed her staff at the demon in front of her, causing the demon’s eyes to flicker with demonic fire.
He spoke something to Jesse in a demonic language, and the Paladin behind him roared and charged forward again. This time, the demon growled and swung its hammer backward to counter, but the Paladin dodged it swiftly.
"Die, demon!"
The Paladin shouted and shifted back slightly before striking the demon’s leg armor with his hammer!
A loud metallic clash rang out as the demon staggered a few steps, steadied itself, clenched its fist, and suddenly set the iron hammer on fire.
He swept his hand towards the pursuing Paladin, while Jesse chanted the Scorch Curse again to strike his armor gap, but Paladin was too late to evade and was knocked down to his knees in one blow.
The demon extinguished the flames on itself with a palm, then lifted the hammer towards Paladin. With his strong resistance to fire, his use of pure fire magic was insufficient. If it weren’t for the Azuresong Mageblade, the demon might not even have bothered.
But to utilize true Shadowflame…
However, Paladin was in a bad situation. If he died, the soldiers fighting the Felhound nearby wouldn’t be able to handle this huge monster! Jesse quickly drew his sword and charged forward. The demon was hammering the knight on the ground, but realized his movements were slow. He raised his hammer to strike Paladin, but suddenly felt a strange sensation around his waist.
When he turned back, he saw a mage behind him had fiercely stabbed the glowing demon sword into his lower back, pulling it out with burning green blood.
The sword scraping against the demon’s bones made a mockery of his clumsiness.
The demon became angry, roaring as he swung his hammer. Jesse dodged by lowering his head, but the demon spat out a large green flame that caught him off guard. He stumbled back several steps, slipping on the muddy ground and falling into a pool behind him.
The bubbling sound of water drowned out everything around him. He opened his eyes, trying to orient himself, but the murky water stung his eyes. The intense flames still swept over the surface, forcing him to swim away to avoid the burning fire.
The demon on the water’s surface growled something in a language he didn’t understand. Two splashes sounded from the sides, as two Felhounds, like responding to a command, jumped into the water and swam towards him. As they approached, Jesse saw the blood-red flesh flowers on their tentacles!
Oh no…
Jesse struggled to swim back to the shore, his vision blurry underwater. He swam towards the glimmering light, but within seconds, the Felhounds were already behind him!
He forcefully cut off the tentacles reaching for him. Despite the sharpness of the Azuresong Mageblade and its burning arcane energy, cutting the tentacles in the water was still quite challenging.
He kicked the Felhound as it charged towards him, feeling a sharp pain in his waist. The Felhound’s tentacles had pierced his skin, and its jaws were aiming for his neck. Jesse stabbed the creature in the head with his sword, causing it to roll in agony in the water after he pulled out the sword.
He couldn’t go for a second stab at the heart, he was almost suffocating!
Just when he thought he had escaped the Felhound’s pursuit and was nearing the water surface, he saw a chain of fire suddenly being thrown into the water. The flames on the chain looked alive and moved like a snake coming towards him!
Jesse had to tightly hold his magic wand underwater, reciting a Shadow Shield spell while holding his breath. The chain that wrapped around him was engulfed in an explosion, losing its fiery power. He swung his sword with all his might, cutting the chain in half with his shining Azuresong Mageblade, which emitted a purple arcane light even underwater.
He cast spells in succession, trying to focus his attention, but with his breath at its limit, he accidentally inhaled water. The dirty pond water rushed into his nose and mouth, almost causing him to drown on the spot.
Enduring the intense pain in his chest, he fought to regain his senses and struggled towards the shore. He grabbed onto a raised area underwater to bring himself back to the shore, coughing out water uncontrollably.
In that moment, the demon marched towards him and swung a hammer at his head!
Jesse dodged swiftly aside with a low shout, causing the demon to miss. The demon then tried to whip him with an iron chain, but found it shortened. Startled, it roared in anger, and the Paladin with a hammer came charging from behind, landing a blow on the demon’s ribs!
The golden light burst from the hammer broke the evil chains on the demon’s ribs and made its armor pieces fall off. The demon was knocked to the ground, as a arrow with Arcane energy pierced its arm, making it collapse with a wild cry as the ground shook.
He laughed and tried to stand up again, shouting with his head down, "What’s the point of defeating me? Your world is already destined to…"
The Paladin swung his hammer and hit the demon’s face, stopping his laughter. The demon shivered and fell down again, his laughter turning into unclear gasps.
The Paladin then raised his hammer again, reciting an incomprehensible prayer. The warhammer started shining brighter, and he struck the demon on the chest. This time, the demon’s body finally went limp and stopped moving.
Jesse looked at his clothes, which had some holes burnt through by flames. However, his skin was unharmed because the protective Mage Armor worked effectively. Since he wasn’t afraid of fire and managed to dodge in time, he wasn’t seriously injured by the flames the demon spat out. The demon was probably a beast tamer, leading a group of low-level demons like Felhunters or imps.
"The soldiers who escaped said a group of Felhounds attacked the caravan, most likely led by this guy." Quinton gasped as he approached Jesse, smiling and saying, "By all that is holy, you’re a mage who is even braver than many front-line fighters I’ve seen. Why don’t you use some ice magic to attack this demon from afar?"
"Honestly, I don’t know how," Jesse said helplessly.
"They found some prisoners over there, Captain!" a soldier in the distance said. "Quite a few of them are still alive!"
The Paladin patted Jesse on the shoulder after hearing this and said, "We have things to do. Nice to meet you, mage."
With that, he ran towards the direction of the soldier.
Jesse looked at the demon’s back, worried that he might notice Jesse using Black Magic to weaken him.
It was clear that this strong man was more like a warrior who preferred using Holy Light to fight evil, rather than a believer. He probably wouldn’t pay attention to the type of magic people around him were using.
Thinking this, Jesse let out a small sigh of relief.
