Chapter 401: Everyone Has Their Own Purpose
Malin and Knight Captain learned more about the situation. Although the fiercest battles were still happening between Nethergarde and Dark Portal, many uncontrollable demons had already reached the area near Stonard.
According to Knight Captain’s estimation, some demons might have entered deep into The Black Morass.
Despite Stonard not having many troops, there were five or six large Alterac Gryphons and some smaller Hinterlandsgryphons stationed there.
The camp was getting crowded, with many people busy handling the gryphons, moving supplies, and tending to their emotions. The close proximity to Dark Portal made the gryphons uneasy due to the demon’s smell.
The gryphons were not fearful but angry and restless. They kept eyeing the sky and the walls of Stonard, as if wanting to challenge the demons without restraint.
A Dwarf Wildhammer, wearing goggles, and aided by other Dwarf Wildhammers, climbed onto a large gray Alterac Gryphon, resembling a scary young dragon when it spread its wings.
Upon receiving the command to take off, the gryphon joyfully leaped out of its nest, causing a commotion. It proudly circled around its companions still inside the nest, while nearby dwarfgryphon administrators kept shouting commands in Dwarven language to stay calm and quiet.
"Nethergarde frontline needs mages to assist in defense!"
A wizard from the Kirin Tor came over and shouted to the mages who had just come out of the portal, "We need formal mages or apprentice mages who can cast powerful spells like Fireball and Arcane Missile. There is a lot of pressure ahead, demons could attack Nethergarde’s walls directly by passing over our outpost and defenses! So it’s best to have experienced fighters who have been through the Orc War!"
Upon hearing the call of the Kirin Tor Mage, the leader of the mages who had already arrived began choosing suitable candidates. Malin also joined the group of mages led by Jesse, and called out names, "Mr. Goss, Mr. Pild, Miss Christian, Mr. Sadler!"
Although Jesse wanted to go to the front lines of Nethergarde immediately, it was clear he was not the best choice. He did not meet any of the requirements set by the Kirin Tor Mage.
He had not learned Fireball because it was more suitable for battlefields than skirmishes, so now he was at a disadvantage. He only knew how to cast a scorching spell, which was definitely not suitable for going to the front lines.
He didn’t know if he could start learning right away or not…
He had given up on learning Arcane Missile, considering his control over arcane magic. But maybe there was still a chance with Fireball, especially after mastering Scorch Curse, the next step was usually learning Fireball.
However, the mages called out by Malin were already excitedly lining up, ready to follow the Kirin Tor Mage and the red-clothed Arathi mages who had arrived through the portals to the gryphon nests.
In other words, most of the mages who could cast Fireball had left the team.
The huge grey gryphon could carry three mages each, and there was another massive Alterac Gryphon carrying wounded soldiers that swooped over the camp made of stones, landing on the flat ground nearby, stirring up a cloud of dust.
After landing, it flapped its wings and a cloud of black smoke rose, smelling strongly of burnt fel magic. Has it just fought demons?
"Mr. Barry Fred."
Malin called out another mage who looked to be around forty years old, wearing a formal mage ring from the Wizard’s Sanctum.
"You go by this name? Are you Master Kanon’s student?"
"Yes, Master Malin."
"I am heading to Nethergarde to assist in defense. You stay here to lead these apprentice mages to ensure the safety of the portal and Stonard, ready to respond to Knight Captain Marsh Selberry’s call at any time."
"Yes, Master, I understand." replied Barry Fred.
After Malin left, Fred spoke to the mages, "Stonard is not safe either, my classmates and colleagues. Mages here should start preparing immediately, make good use of the spells you learned at the Wizard’s Sanctum, check spell scrolls, enchant weapons, summon water, help priests with healing, and create mana gems to support the mages maintaining the portal!"
"This is a vast marsh, abundant with water elementals. Do not hold back your magic! The transport line between Stonard and Darkshire is under constant threat from demon scouts, and clean water is currently scarce. You have heard what the Knight Captain said!"
"Also, be ready to fight at any time, gentlemen. Demons may attack here as it is currently the only portal. The Kirin Tor is looking for another safe portal quickly, but if things don’t go smoothly, demons will arrive here soon."
Jesse nodded. He wasn’t good at any of the abilities mentioned earlier, but at least he knew how to fight.
Then, a warrior wearing a blue shirt and carrying a long-handled warhammer approached from the Arathi mages and looked at Barry Fred, asking, "Are you the leader of the Stormwind mages, master?"
"For now, Archmage Malin has gone to Nethergarde."
"We need a mage who can track demon traces now, master," the warrior said.
"Only official mages know how to track demon traces, sir," Fred replied. "There will be a new group of mages coming from the Wizard’s Sanctum tomorrow, and they can help you then."
"What about you?" the warrior asked.
"I need to oversee the work here, and I’m not good at tracking demon traces. I’m better at enchanting and dispelling magic," Fred said.
"Unlucky," the warrior sighed, then glanced uncomfortably at the red-robed mages of Stromgarde, pressing his forehead.
"I can track demons," Jesse said.
Fred glanced at Jesse’s ring and said, "Are you Master Malin’s student? But you are just a beginner mage. The apprentice mage course at Wizard’s Sanctum does not involve tracking demons and shadow creatures."
"But I have experience fighting demons," Jesse said, looking at the warrior carrying a war hammer. "If you don’t trust me, you can wait for the mages tomorrow. If you need someone urgently now, I could take on the task."
"We do need help urgently, young man. Demons have captured a group of patrollers, and we are organizing a team to rescue them," the warrior said to Jesse. "Here’s the deal, if you can tell me why the demons are capturing humans instead of killing them outright, I will trust you to help us."
"They need the souls of the living to summon more demons," Jesse said.
"Come with us, mage," the warrior said.
