Chapter 399: A Farewell That Isn’t Really a Farewell
Back at home, Jesse told the two demons, "It seems we’ve found the reason for the strange occurrences here. The Dark Portal is malfunctioning."
"That huge portal is definitely going to have problems, I’m not surprised at all!" Saenor peeked beside the pack and said, "So, did the gate collapse on its own?"
"It’s worse than that," Jesse said. "It seems like many demons are attacking the gate, so the defenders there are in urgent need of help. I have to go support them. This means I will be leaving for a while, it could be a long time or a short time, who knows?"
"Then we’ll go help you!" Saenor said. "Master, take me with you!"
Jesse said, "It’s unlikely because we have to go through a mage’s portal, and there are priests, mages, and even Silver Hand Paladins everywhere over there. We have to deal with demons coming from the Dark Portal. I think it’s best for you two not to cause trouble there, you might get mistaken for enemy soldiers and be killed by accident."
"So, I have to stay here and guard the home for who knows how long?" Molofeel asked. "While my master is out there risking his life with a bunch of lowly creatures coming from the darkest corners of the Twisting Nether? This is when I should be helping you…"
Jesse shook his head and said, "I don’t want to go alone either, but there’s no other way. There’s no safe place for you to hide over there. Once exposed to our own people, both you and I will be dead… Maybe you could find a way to escape, but I’m definitely doomed."
He changed into a shirt that he usually wore when strolling in Stormwind, without so many mage marks, and then said, "If you’re really bored, you can take the imp to that underground cellar, remember to hide well. If Erlan Drudgemoor tries anything with you, well, you know what to do. Apart from that, there’s nothing else worth noting."
Molofeel chuckled and said, "Got it, master, but if you die, I won’t consider your friends as friends anymore."
"You can go wherever you want if I die, but at least promise me not to go around killing people in the city," Jesse said.
"The evil demoness won’t agree with you, master!" imp cried out, "Once you are dead, she will have no restraints or hopes anymore. She will do whatever she wants, even I will be doomed. Please take me with you… I don’t want to die by her hands! I would rather be torn apart by the dreadful magic of the Dark Portal! My invisibility is strong, very strong, it won’t be discovered…"
Jesse said, "No need to emphasize your invisibility, I can’t take the risk. The best mages of the Kirin Tor might be there. Can you escape the surveillance of The Violet Eye by shifting dimensions?"
"Ouch…" imp groaned while lying on the table.
"If you die, I don’t have time to kill anyone here, master," Molofeel said expressionlessly, "I need to quickly find out which demon you died at, then depart immediately, chase him to any possible corner in the Twisting Nether, until crushing his demonic soul before considering other things… Ah, just thinking about it is a big hassle."
Jesse buckled up and glanced at her, nodding, "I’ll try not to trouble you so much, Molofeel."
In the afternoon, Jesse arrived at the Dwarven District, the weather did not improve at all, still gloomy. The streets of the Dwarven District were also filled with the same smell she had encountered in the Mage Quarter.
But without the strange-smelling rain, it was a slight improvement from the morning.
Jesse knocked on Greed’s rental door, inside Greed was shouting in Dwarven language towards the door, probably not saying pleasant things.
Greed peeked out and then looked up after opening the door.
"Why are you here? How did you come here?"
Jesse cleared his throat and said, "I’m going away for a while, Greed. Since I’m leaving tomorrow, I came to tell you."
Greed asked, "So… is it true? About the Dark Portal."
Jesse asked, "You know about it too?"
"Everyone here is talking about it," Greed said. "Come in and talk, Jesse."
The dwarf led Jesse into the house, closed the door, scratched his head and said, "Last night… there was a green flame explosion in the kitchen of Pig and Whistle Tavern. I think it was magic fire, but I’m not sure. Luckily, it was put out quickly, but they still haven’t opened the doors."
"Besides Pig and Whistle Tavern in Old Town, the cobbler’s shop is also on fire."
"There are some issues in Dwarven District as well, but I don’t know exactly whose house caught fire. In any case, it’s not normal fire. Some say demons are coming, claiming that demons escaped from the Dark Portal… I didn’t pay much attention to it, but do you have any reliable news from the Wizard’s Sanctum?"
"Messages sent by Gryphon Rider, Greed," Jesse said. "There are big problems at the Dark Portal, Nethergarde needs support. I guess not only mages, but also more soldiers need to rush there, like from Redridge, Darkshire and the like… this side may also need to send reinforcements over, but the news arrived a couple of days ago, it will take some time to gather, but the mages are ready to depart."
"Darn it, can’t you take me along?" Greed asked, "When are we leaving?"
"Tomorrow morning," Jesse said, "We’ll be teleported by a mage, at first probably only sending the mage."
The dwarf nodded thoughtfully, then said, "Don’t worry, young man, I can’t let you go alone to fight those demons, I will definitely go with you."
"If Nethergarde falls, Stormwind falls, if Stormwind falls, how can Ironforge survive? It will lead to another Orc War, right? This time I won’t have any problems, at least I won’t be inexplicably removed before the battle!"
"I know this is far from over… Those Orcs will not give up easily, the Demon Lords behind the Horde, those even more powerful monsters will not surrender. I will find a way to go, Jesse, don’t forget Kurdran Wildhammer is also in the expedition team, Wildhammer will not abandon his brothers, and I will join those guys, just maybe a bit later, but I will definitely go."
"So this is not a goodbye." He patted Jesse’s waist and said, "Just means you have to go first, I have to take it slower, even if I ride a gryphon there, it will take a couple of days to fly, definitely slower than teleportation, especially now that I don’t have a gryphon to ride."
"The news has reached Ironforge, Greed," Jesse said, "King Bronzebeard may be planning to gather troops to advance towards The Black Morass, if you really intend to go, there will definitely be a place for you to go."
"That’s even better," Greed said, "Since you’re leaving tomorrow, how about going out to eat now? Oh… darn it, Pig and Whistle Tavern is closed because of that incident, how about eating at my place? I have plenty of cheese, bread stored here, of course, a few barrels of dark ale as well! Just bought them a few days ago."
Jesse glanced at the dwarf’s cupboard and asked, "Do you have any meat?"
"Dwarf said, ‘Jerky and sausages, you will definitely need them.’"
"Then what reason do I have to refuse…" Jesse licked his lips.
