Chapter 398: Storm Approaching
The next morning unexpectedly felt a bit cold, and it started to drizzle. Jesse put on his cloak, getting ready to buy breakfast at The Gilded Rose before hurrying to Mage Quarter.
The sky was dark and gloomy, the smell of rain was unpleasant, with a faint unpleasant fishy odor, reminding him of dirty river water where dead fish had soaked.
As he reached the trading area, a Gryphon Rider suddenly flew across the sky heading north, perhaps towards Khaz Modan, or maybe elsewhere…
It almost brushed against the rooftops, the whirlwind created by the gryphon caused many people’s clothes on the street to flutter and shake.
The mud clouds in the sky had a strange purple hue, and the occasional lightning flashes were tinged with emerald green. Was this an illusion?
As he passed through the trading area, the crowd on the street seemed a bit panicked. Even in the rain, some people were staring intently at the sky, whispering about something.
At that moment, a mage wearing a blue robe rode through the trading area on horseback, holding a magic wand high and trailing a dazzling Light Spell, shouting loudly, "All mages… all mages above apprentices, please gather immediately at the Wizard’s Sanctum!"
The mage’s figure quickly disappeared from the street, but his voice echoed back and forth. Jesse didn’t even have time for breakfast; he immediately ran towards the canal.
When Jesse arrived at the Wizard’s Sanctum, he saw many nervous mages gathering near the garden. Jesse had run a long way and was a bit out of breath. He looked at his tense colleagues and could sense that something was happening.
He had known for a long time that this day would come.
Something must have changed on the other side of the Dark Portal.
Although Teron Gorefiend couldn’t cross the Dark Portal with the three Sacred Tools, Deathwing helped him fulfill his agreement with the Great Chief Ner’zhul of the Horde on the other side, in exchange for the Horde protecting the Black Dragon eggs in Draenor.
Without Gorefiend, the Horde’s downfall would only be quicker. Ner’zhul wanted to obtain the three Sacred Tools to open the portal and lead the Horde to another world.
Their efforts to invade Azeroth had failed, and Draenor was on the brink of death. Azeroth’s armies had even reached them. Ner’zhul felt obliged to find a new home for the Orcs.
Once Ner’zhul used the incantations and portal activation method recorded in the Book of Medivh, wielded the Scepter of Sargeras, and began to activate the portal by harnessing the power of the Eye of Dalaran, the already weakened Draenor, tortured by fel magic and void energies, would begin to disintegrate.
It must have been this power passing through the Dark Portal to Azeroth that caused these terrible omens.
However, even though Jesse knew what would happen, he wasn’t mentally prepared for these signs because his understanding of the event was limited to just a few words from the game background.
But he also remembered that when Ner’zhul’s portal opened and Draenor was on the brink of collapse, one of the leaders of the expedition, archmage Khadgar, decisively destroyed the Dark Portal to prevent Azeroth from being affected by Draenor’s terrifying destruction.
He knew that if the Dark Portal continued, Draenor’s collapse would increasingly impact the world on this side, causing huge disasters even on the whole of Azeroth.
But why hasn’t Khadgar blown up the Dark Portal yet?
"Mr. Seso."
Jesse turned around and saw Malin approaching with some familiar faces.
"I’m glad you’re here too, because we are facing a huge problem right now. There has been trouble on the other side of the Dark Portal a few days ago, demons are threatening Nethergarde, and we must leave immediately to support the front line."
"Demons are trying to block the spread of information, only a few Gryphon Riders successfully left there to deliver the message to the Kingdom of Stormwind. We were among the first to receive the news, but not early enough, the entire front line is already facing the threat of a demon army."
Jesse said, "So Amy…"
"Yes, she is also in danger," Malin said. "I have informed Master Andromath to lead a group of mages to support Nethergarde, and we will depart tomorrow. You previously asked me if you could rush to Nethergarde to help, do you still want to do that now?"
"Now is the time, Master," Jesse immediately said, "I am willing to go."
"Very good, very good, Mr. Seso," Malin grabbed Jesse’s shoulder and said, "Meet me at Wizard’s Sanctum by this time tomorrow, the mages at Wizard’s Sanctum may not be able to send off so many mages in a few days, perhaps the mages from Quel’Thalas or Kirin Tor will help then."
"Teleport?" Jesse asked.
"It’s the only way," Malin said, "Even if you hurry, it will take two weeks on foot, by then the demon legion might have reached Darkshire."
Jesse nodded in astonishment, realizing he was about to experience real teleportation magic soon.
Even though it wasn’t his own magic.
After Malin and the mages left, he immediately headed to The Slaughtered Lamb inn.
Why would demons come from the Dark Portal to here? He didn’t understand, hasn’t the Alliance firmly controlled the Dark Portal? How did demons suddenly appear?
Perhaps that’s why Khadgar didn’t destroy the Dark Portal at the beginning of the disaster, the demons had taken back control from there.
But this is just a guess. Clearly, Malin’s information is limited too. Maybe we will only know the real reason when we reach Nethergarde.
Going down to the basement, pushing aside the Felhunter, rushing into the Alchemy Room.
"Ursula," he said to the Alchemist who had just woken up and was still holding a piece of bread in his mouth, "I might be going on a trip. I don’t know when I’ll be back, but… I don’t think it will be too long."
"Where are you going?" Ursula asked.
"Nethergarde," Jesse admitted. "Remember to tell the others for me."
"Are you talking about the Dark Portal? Are you joining the expedition as a mage? Is it an order from the Wizard’s Sanctum?" Ursula asked.
"Not joining the expedition. Nethergarde is in danger, and I need to help. I’ll be leaving soon."
"Is it related to the weather these past few days?"
"It might have something to do with it."
"So, how can I help?"
"Not this time, I just came to let you know because things happened suddenly."
"Well, good luck." Ursula hesitated slightly and continued, "Come back soon, Jesse. I’m still waiting for you to help me find other materials. That Noggenfogger elixir is still missing…"
She said this calmly, but it seemed like a wave of emotions rushed up and paused for a moment.
"I gave you so many things, don’t you dare…"
"I will come back," Jesse said. "Don’t worry."
The Alchemist nodded, walked over, and hugged Jesse tightly, whispering, "I know you, little one… will be fine."
