Chapter 394: Extracting Souls

Jesse opened the Soul Shard pouch given to him by Mor’zul, only to find that there were now only two shiny Soul Shards left inside.

Furthermore, both of these Soul Shards were infused with Arcane energy, specifically used to summon Felhunters. Jesse wasn’t sure if using these Soul Shards to cast magic would lead to any unforeseen consequences.

He looked at the imp and asked, "Saenor, how are souls crafted into these Soul Shards?"

"Master, those demons who harvest souls are the best at this!" the imp replied.

"So you’re saying nothing useful?" Jesse sighed.

In the game, in order to collect a Soul Shard, one needs to use a soul-siphoning magic. If the target dies during the process, their soul will be collected by the warlock.

Jesse had no clue about this kind of magic now. He then turned to the succubus and asked, "Do you know anything about this, Molofeel?"

"You finally remembered to ask me?" Molofeel propped up her chin and said, "I’ve captured not only demon souls but also created dark soul chunks from corrupted beasts, master. I think, since you managed to catch my attention with a sheep’s soul, the souls of ordinary beasts here should be enough to make small Soul Shards."

"You can control this kind of magic?" Jesse asked.

"Don’t forget what I used to do, master," Molofeel tilted his head and said, "What use is a demon’s body for the Eredar warlocks and Pit Lords? In the Twisting Nether, there are palaces built from demon remains… Of course, souls are the most important. A hunter who does not harvest souls cannot be considered a true hunter."

"You didn’t say earlier," Jesse looked around, but the quiet forest revealed nothing. Now he half-hoped a giant Worg would come out and ambush him.

"Most of the beasts in Duskwood have been corrupted by the shadows, Molofeel. You should be able to find the powerful Soul Shard you mentioned here."

In the game, Duskwood is filled with hungry wolves roaming everywhere. The forest here… so empty. Even if you hear the occasional beast’s cry and follow it, you find nothing.

After a whole afternoon of searching, he entered a dark forest that carried a hint of decay by dusk. The buzzing of flies could be heard all around.

Venturing further in, he noticed something whitish on the trees up ahead.

He remembered the troll ruins he encountered in the Hinterlands. Were these spider threads?

Looking up at the trees, he indeed saw some white, silky substance hanging on the branches, swaying back and forth.

Jesse kept walking forward for a while and encountered more and more old trees covered in white silk. He eventually entered another dense forest, where spider webs were everywhere.

He found a spider web and helped a struggling insect stuck on it.

"Oh no! Help me! Save me! I don’t want to die!" Suddenly, a burst of fire ignited the spider web around him. The web quickly lost its strength under the burning flames, causing Jesse to fall into the muddy ground with a thud.

After getting up, he looked back to see the self-satisfied imp holding his waist.

"How’s that? I saved the foolish master’s life again!"

Molofeel emerged from the shadows, grabbed the imp by its neck, and said, "The master was trying to lure the spider over… otherwise, what about the Soul Shard?"

"Ah… master, I was wrong…" the imp coughed.

"Disappear!" Jesse commanded.

The two demons then vanished in a flash of light.

Jesse looked around the forest and wondered if there were any spiders around after the commotion.

He wandered around this forest that seemed like a spider nest, and then walked to another area with spider webs. He found a fairly intact web and pounced on it.

"Oh no, darn spiders! I’m doomed… I don’t want to die! Help!"

The few words he shouted seemed to deceive the spider. Maybe spiders aren’t smarter than imps? Thinking of Saenor’s clever tricks earlier and the size of the Azeroth spider, he hesitated.

After struggling for a while, he didn’t sense any movement from spiders nearby. Suddenly, he remembered that animals could sense fear. Maybe he seemed too calm and should show fear or fatigue to make the spider feel something? He struggled some more until he broke out in a sweat, then looked at the treetops, glanced at a distant dark shadow, remembered a few scary encounters, especially the day he met the Naga in the fishing village… He took a deep breath and exhaled.

It wasn’t long before there seemed to be some movement in the trees.

Several thin, needle-like black limbs slowly descended along the spider web. Jesse watched as they belonged to the spider with its red eyes contaminated by shadows buried in the darkness, feeling a tingling sensation on his scalp.

"Attack!"

Suddenly, a shadow flew over and brushed past the spider. The spider made some noises as it rolled down from the tree trunk, surprisingly its body was as big as a small calf.

The crab-like claws could easily drill a hole in the skull.

But now, its belly had been slashed open by Molofeel’s black sword, spilling yellow and white innards all over the ground. The black giant spider tried to crawl into the forest, but its strength was fading rapidly, making it difficult to even stand up.

Molofeel chased after the dying spider, opening her mouth close to its black body as if extracting something. As she closed her lips, the spider collapsed, motionless.

She picked up the black sword and took out a light purple Soul Shard from her mouth, handing it to Jesse, saying, "It may not shine as brightly as the other charged souls in your pouch, maybe it won’t attract Felhunter, but I think it should be enough now."

"That’s good enough, Molofeel," Jesse took the shard, "I can’t ask for more. I thought I could only try twice this time… I need to go back to Erlan Drudgemoor to buy more shards."

"By the way, can you teach me this magic?"

Molofeel sighed, "I’m sorry, master, this isn’t a simple spell… I can’t just teach it to you as I wish."

If this magic couldn’t be learned, how did Mor’zul get these shards? If they were bought, the seller should at least be able to create Soul Shards.

Even in the game, there are many ways to condense the soul into Soul Shards, and Molofeel’s method was obviously not like the soul extraction magic in the game.

In any case, there must be a way that humans can grasp.
