Chapter 391: Preparing a New Spell
That afternoon, after Jesse finished his class at the Protection School, he went to The Slaughtered Lamb tavern.
He planned to head to Goldshire in the afternoon to stay overnight, and then proceed to Duskwood the next day. Before leaving, he needed to prepare all the test spell potions.
Upon entering the basement, the dimly lit room felt strangely eerie.
He focused and saw a shadowy figure rushing towards him. He tried to dodge, but the Felhunter stopped in front of him and growled threateningly twice.
"Basadre…"
A shout came from the corridor, and the Felhunter turned and darted into the passage. Jesse followed it all the way to the Alchemy Room, where she saw Ursula helplessly staring at Jesse who had just entered the room.
"This dog is really troublesome," Ursula said. "Every time someone comes in, I have to stop it to prevent any harm to you all. It’s really a headache."
"But I have to say, it has made this place a lot safer," Jesse replied.
Ursula rested her chin on her hand, looking at the Felhound keeping a close eye on Jesse. She said, "Well, it does provide some peace of mind. At least I would immediately know if a mage passes through the doorway, this little guy is very sensitive."
"Only mages?" Jesse asked.
"Yes," Ursula replied. "It doesn’t pay any attention even when Jarel Moor comes down. It seems to only be interested in those who can do magic."
Jesse suggested, "Maybe because in the Twisting Nether it was a hunter tracking mages. But we still need to be careful around those mages."
Ursula said, "I wouldn’t have been able to complete the summoning ritual without your encouragement and the help of the succubuses. Thank you, Jesse."
"I wouldn’t have survived until today if it wasn’t for your potions, Ursula," Jesse chuckled. "I remember you used to tell me that members of the Dagger Association should help each other, but now you’re thanking me specifically."
Ursula giggled and said, "So, you’re here today to ask for my help, aren’t you?"
"Yes," Jesse replied. "I need three bottles of Mana Potion and, if possible, one bottle of Shadow Protection Potion."
Ursula filled his potion bag and handed it to Jesse, who then asked, "How much do you know about the female warlock that Mor’zul used to like?"
"That woman was a warlock?" Ursula shook her head. "Looks like I know even less than you do."
Jesse nodded, realizing he should probably ask Zardeth for more information.
However, he felt it might be too obvious if he went straight to Zardeth about Mor’zul right after learning a Felhunter summoning spell.
Besides, Zardeth had been spending a lot of time in Darkshire lately, contacting the tailor who was willing to make robes for warlocks, so he wouldn’t be easily reachable.
"You’re here for the potion, are you going on a journey again?" asked Ursula.
"Not exactly," Jesse said. "I just got a spell and wanted to see what it does. I might just go to the south bank of the Nazferiti river, won’t be away for too long."
Ursula nodded, reached into the cupboard and took out a small round bottle of pale green liquid, she slipped it into Jesse’s pouch and said, "Potion of Wisdom, Jesse. The mages say it can help you sense magic more easily when you cast spells. I think it will help you test your new spell."
"I didn’t even think about needing this potion, thank you so much," Jesse said, patting the pouch containing the potion.
Coming back home at noon, Jesse saw Greed squatting by the canal, watching him from afar. Greed immediately kicked all the collected thin stones into the river.
"What are you doing here?" Jesse asked knowingly.
"Aren’t you here for lunch?" Greed replied loudly.
Jesse asked, "How was the trip to the mine?"
"I thought I could make easy money there," Greed said unhappily. "But those Kobolds are so cunning, running around everywhere. Not only did I not earn any money, but I also ended up losing a lot on medical bills and burned a coat."
Jesse made a big hand gesture and said, "Why don’t you come down from the heavens and defeat those Kobold dogs?"
"Those Kobold dug small holes in the mine that are even hard for me to get through with my head ducked. Do you want me to turn into an even bigger stone man?" Greed sighed and said, "If getting angry can strengthen my powers, I might be stronger than the real Mountain King by now!"
Jesse couldn’t help but laugh and said, "I think you need a new temple to train your powers… Maybe wait for your Dark Iron relatives to dig deeper into the temple, or find another one."
"I’m starting to feel the same way," Greed said.
The two of them arrived at The Gilded Rose. The dwarf went to the back of the inn, found a seat in a corner, and said, "After we caused such a commotion there, the Troggs shouldn’t dare to stop the Dark Iron Dwarves from digging further in. How long should we wait before going back, four years, five years?"
"Definitely not tomorrow," Jesse said. "I’m going south tomorrow."
"Goldshire?" Greed asked.
"Yes," Jesse said. "I want to visit Duskwood and try some spells."
Greed leaned in and asked quietly, "Is that Shadow Magic?"
"No," Jesse said, "But speaking of that, I feel like the shield lasted longer in front of that stone door during that time."
"Really? Is it not an illusion?" Greed asked.
"It’s not an illusion," Jesse said, "And, do you remember the Nathrezim I mentioned before, Dread Lord? Those cunning demons like to use this kind of shield. They usually don’t want to fight up close with people. If this shield can only last for a second or two, I can hardly imagine that the Dread Lord would like it."
"So, I still need to practice more, or find out what’s wrong with this spell, to see what’s not right."
Greed nodded and said, "If it’s not this magic, what are you going to try next?"
"I don’t know either, that’s why I have to try," Jesse said.
"I’ll go too," Greed said, "I don’t have much to do these days, going out for a change of scenery. If you get blown up by your magic, I can at least pick up your body."
After saying that, the dwarf laughed, Jesse sighed and lightly tapped the table with his finger, saying, "Since you just came back from the mines not long ago, just sleep well in Stormwind for a few days. I have the imp to help me. I know nothing about that spell right now. If we need to test it, it might take a long time, and you’ll probably get bored watching me constantly reciting the same thing."
"Since you put it that way… I can only wish you good luck," Greed patted his thigh and said, "Get some food from the boss, eat a full meal before leaving."
