Chapter 384: The Cabin on the Mountain
The alleys where drifters and refugees roamed were definitely not a good place to casually talk about demons or Shadow Magic. So, Jesse accepted Mor’zul’s invitation to go to his nearby residence.
Mor’zul did not live in Moonbrook but in a small cabin on the hill behind Moonbrook.
At night, Jesse walked alongside the stranger who felt familiar, Mor’zul, and whispered, "I can tell that the Felhunter is wary of your power. I’ve never seen it so cautious when facing a warlock or mage before."
"If you don’t mind, tell me about yourself. I should know or have heard of most of the warlocks from the Kingdom of Stormwind, or people involved with demons, but I seem to have never met or heard of anyone who can hunt demons like you do."
"You know Gakin, right?" Jesse asked.
Upon hearing the name Gakin, Mor’zul turned around.
"Jesse Seso, you are Jesse Seso."
"It seems he mentioned me," Jesse said.
"Hah," Mor’zul chuckled hoarsely, "Gakin has told me about some things in Stormwind and mentioned you. But you are much younger than I expected."
"About what?"
"He mentioned that The Slaughtered Lamb inn is doing well and found someone like you. He said you are undoubtedly a very talented person. Are you also trying to persuade me to go back? Is Zardeth also dead?"
"No," Jesse said, "I am indeed interested in demons."
Mor’zul nodded as he continued walking upwards, saying, "I am not interested in returning to Stormwind, not because of The Slaughtered Lamb group, but because… what I plan to do cannot be accomplished in Stormwind."
Jesse nodded as the night forest still felt chilly. Mor’zul looked frail and weak, hugging his arms tightly as the cold wind blew, resembling someone suffering from a cold or fever.
"Why don’t you teach Gakin the spell to summon a Felhunter?" Jesse asked.
Mor’zul turned to look at Jesse, his expression noticeably distant.
"Look at where he is now, that reckless fool. I admit he has more talent in learning Shadow Magic than I do, but controlling shadows is entirely different from controlling demons. Not to mention, his absurd ideas and mistakes sometimes are beyond belief, so the outcome was within my expectations."
"Felhunters cannot conceal themselves like imps or succubi, they are simply wild beasts who cannot help you think. They are difficult to control for a beginner in demon summoning."
"For instance, if you told a succubus to publicly kill a priest in a church, she would question your sanity and try to persuade you not to issue such a command. But if you ordered a Felhunter to assassinate the imp leader in Stormwind Keep, it would charge through the front gates without hesitation."
"However, Gakin was also killed by his own succubus," Jesse said.
"Don’t blame everything on the demon. Jealousy can make succubi lose control, and their chaotic emotions can make them forget everything." Mor’zul leaned against a tree and said, "I think you already have your own companion, right? So don’t summon a second one."
Two people walked through the trees, following a path uphill, and eventually arrived at a small house in a valley, with the light still on in the window.
A succubus was sitting at the doorway, smiling and looking at Jesse. She said something to Mor’zul as he approached.
Mor’zul nodded, indicating for the succubus to leave. The succubus turned and walked towards a dark corner, but kept glancing at Jesse until she disappeared around the corner.
"What did she say?" Jesse asked.
Mor’zul replied, "Daphne is just worried. She thinks you… are quite dangerous."
"Aren’t you worried?" Jesse asked.
Mor’zul leaned against the door and said, "I deal with the Twisting Nether. Those who are always hesitant to face such an unknown world are destined not to go far."
Jesse followed him through the door. Although the house looked rundown from the outside, like a hunter’s or mountaineer’s residence, even more dilapidated than those mountaineer’s houses in Redridge, the interior was surprisingly neat and clean. He glanced around the space and noticed several books and stacks of papers on the bookshelf in the room across the corridor. If those were old books collected from Orcs, they seemed too intact.
"Please have a seat." Mor’zul pointed to a few chairs nearby.
Jesse sat down and went straight to the point, asking, "You mentioned you need a partner, how can I help you?"
Mor’zul sat down and said, "I have been searching for stronger demons, Jesse. Under the command of the Orc Warlock, there are many types of demons attacking the Alliance army, not just the most numerous imps and Felhunters, but also powerful demon warriors and winged demons that can fly."
"Ever since the Dark Portal opened, I have been exploring ways to communicate with demons in the Twisting Nether. The arrival of the Orcs should have accelerated my progress, but the Kingdom of Stormwind retreated too quickly. During the war, most of my energy was spent avoiding being hunted by Orcs, wasting too much time."
"But I firmly believe that humans are no worse than Orcs. We can definitely summon more powerful demons than these, to help us explore and understand the Twisting Nether."
Jesse said, "The Dark Portal has strengthened the connection between here and the Twisting Nether, I have heard others say that summoning demons has become easier."
"I don’t think so." Mor’zul said, "Too many foolish people describe the Twisting Nether, describing demons… In my opinion, rather than saying our world is closer to the Twisting Nether, it is more accurate to say that we have mastered more precise ways to communicate with the Twisting Nether. Before the Dark Portal opened, demon language was an absolute taboo, locked only in the depths of the Dalaran library, with only fragments known outside."
"But things are different now, through the Orcs’ records, we can learn more ways to communicate with demons… These savage monsters seem to be favored by demons, there must be a reason."
"Do you speak Demonic?" Jesse asked.
"I can understand a bit, but definitely not as much as you." Mor’zul held a cup of water and said, "Otherwise, I should have noticed the issue in that spell before you did."
"Are you talking about the spell to summon a succubus?" Jesse asked.
Mor’zul nodded and said, "Yes, successfully summoning Daphne, I must thank you even more."
