Chapter 381: Moonbrook
Leaving Westbrook and resting at Sentinel Hill for a night, Jesse continued on towards Moonbrook. Even though he rode his horse quickly along the way, it still took him nearly two days to reach Moonbrook.
Jesse felt that the distance from Westbrook Garrison to Moonbrook was probably not much shorter than the distance from Menethil Harbor to Dun Algaz. Of course, he didn’t have accurate maps of Khaz Modan or the Kingdom of Stormwind to compare, it was just a feeling he had.
The reason why they traveled so far in the wetlands was because it was very difficult to travel through the Great Swamp. Riding on the repaired trade road here was much more comfortable and faster.
Thankfully, Aarna was strong and young enough. If they had an older and weaker horse, they wouldn’t have been able to travel so quickly.
When they arrived in Moonbrook in the evening, Jesse’s first impression of the town wasn’t very good.
The town was nestled against a small hill that could only be described as a dirt slope. Although it was quite lively, it also looked very messy with streets and houses appearing to be haphazardly placed, with no particular order in height or size.
Even though the Kingdom of Stormwind had only taken this town from the Orcs a few years ago, it had been mostly rebuilt. However, aside from the distant watchtowers and a few blue-clad Stormwind soldiers, there were no more patrols with lion emblems to be seen in the whole town.
As Jesse arrived at the inn, he glanced around the street and saw young and middle-aged people sitting on the street with bare arms, chatting in various mixed-up accents. Some of their common language was even difficult to understand.
It was hard to tell if these people were miners, refugees, or a group of bandits getting ready for action at night.
But this time, Jesse didn’t bring anything valuable with him, except for a dagger that he kept close. So he wasn’t too worried.
Walking into the inn, Jesse tried to focus his attention and glanced inside, using his ability to Detect Demons to monitor the entire hall, even though he wasn’t expecting to see any demons in such a busy place. After all, this wasn’t Booty Bay, but a town under the control of Stormwind…
However, he still noticed the presence of an imp in a corner.
As he entered the inn, drawing quite a bit of attention, he decided not to continue staring in that direction. Instead, he walked straight to the counter. But the imp appeared there so openly that it surprised him.
He remembered that in the quick glance he had taken, besides the imp sitting in the corner, there was a woman who seemed to be in her thirties or forties. The imp would sometimes jump on the table, sometimes leap onto the floor, relying on its ability to Phase Shift and move around recklessly.
Jesse regretted not bringing the imp or succubus here. He had only come to deliver a few documents and never thought there would be a Demon Warlock in Moonbrook bold enough to bring demons to the inn.
Of course, they had at least one line of caution when it came to their identity, not daring to show their demons to others.
"Need something to eat, mage," the innkeeper, a sturdy man, said as he kept his eyes on the ring on Jesse’s hand.
"I wonder where the mayor lives, sir," Jesse said.
"The mayor," the boss chuckled and said, "We don’t have a mayor here."
"As you can see," Jesse touched his ring and said, "Some children in the town are planning to study magic in Stormwind. At least someone here is helping those children apply for a spot at the Wizard’s Sanctum. I’m looking for that gentleman."
"You’re talking about Mr. Cooper," the boss nodded, "His house is on the road coming out from the mine, not far from the town hall. Once you go there, you’ll see it. It’s on the west side of town."
"Thank you very much," Jesse said, "Has this town never had a real mayor?"
"Of course, there have been mayors before, or else where would the town hall come from?" the boss said, "It’s just that the previous mayor and his family all died in the war. Now this area is managed by our king. A new mayor has not been selected yet, but Mr. Cooper is definitely the most active candidate."
Jesse nodded and said, "I’d like a pork pie, a glass of milk, any kind, and also, I’d like to spend the night here."
"That’ll be thirty-two copper coins, mage."
Jesse placed a silver coin on the table and said, "No need for change, just pick a quiet room for me."
The boss, who used to be a bit cold, suddenly became friendlier and placed the silver coin on the table, saying, "Go upstairs, turn left at the end, the room on the left. Also, people here don’t like mages, so try not to cause any trouble. This is not a threat, just sincere advice."
"I’m just here to pass on a message," Jesse nodded and said, "Find Mr. Cooper tomorrow and then leave."
"Wishing you all the best," the boss said.
People here definitely don’t like mages. Jesse found a seat, gazing ahead blankly. The warlock sat by his side, and Jesse could even feel her staring at him.
And of course, there was the imp.
The biggest trouble for the warlocks here was the mage of the Wizard’s Sanctum. Magit, Master Dumas, was in charge of hunting down Orc Warlocks and demons still within the kingdom’s borders. The investigation into the Death Knight in Raven Hill was under his leadership.
Thinking about this, he felt he should hide the ring instead of just wearing it in. Elsewhere in Stormwind, like Goldshire, Darkshire, or Raven Hill, being a mage would have its advantages. However, it was too late now. If he put away the ring under the warlock’s watchful eye, it would only cause more trouble. It was better to wear it openly.
After the boss brought sheep’s milk and pies, Jesse ate while staring outside, focusing to see if any demons passed by. Before long, a slim man with black hair walked in. There was a faint shadow on his shoulder. Jesse glanced at him and continued drinking milk. The man kept staring at Jesse until he moved on to find the woman behind him.
It seemed his earlier worry about not finding the warlock in Moonbrook was indeed unnecessary.
The warlocks here are much more arrogant than those in Stormwind, and they seem proud of having demons with them.
The two warlocks nearby greeted each other. Jesse listened closely to what they were saying. One of the men asked, "How about it?"
The woman replied, "No one can control us tonight."
The man said, "I can’t wait anymore, my little wildcat."
"Me neither," the woman whispered, even revealing a hint of a smile in her voice.
Jesse took a big bite of pie and chewed silently.
