Chapter 379: Investigating Plan Along the Way
In the afternoon, Jesse took the imp to the forest outside the town. After making sure no one was around, he said, "Saenor, go stand opposite."
"What are we up to this time, master? Am I going to be attacked by some strange magic again?"
The imp bounced away and stood on the other side, peering over after pushing aside the nearby weeds.
"Cast a Firebolt spell towards the distance," Jesse said.
The imp glanced curiously in the direction and mumbled as he cast the spell, "This is so strange…"
Watching flames shoot out from the imp’s hands, Jesse immediately recited, "Mordstawain!"
He felt the Arcane energy had been activated by himself, and he could sense both the imp and the gathered fel magic heat, but just as he was about to sever the imp’s connection with the inferno, the imp preemptively halted its spellcasting, completely dodging the Counterspell!
"Haha! Trying to counter me with that move is not so easy, master! I may be weak, but I am not foolish! Your spellcasting is too obvious, master!"
The imp seemed excitedly bouncing around, as if it had caught Jesse’s weakness. Jesse, in disbelief, practiced against the imp a few more times, always getting tricked out of countering. Because Jesse was not very familiar with Counterspell, the more he practiced, the more frustrated he became, and he was even further from success than when he started.
After some time, he felt signs of his energy being depleted. Seeing the imp waiting smugly for his counterspell, continuously attempting to gather flames, as if taunting him, Jesse said, "Come at me again. I command you not to interrupt the casting, and shoot another Firebolt into the distance."
"What is this…"
Although muttering under his breath, Saenor obediently began casting his spell. Jesse immediately chanted Counterspell, cutting off the imp and its summoned fel magic. Two fireballs exploded around Saenor’s hands, causing the imp to jump around in chaos.
"Ouch, ouch! What is all this!"
Although it could be considered a success, Jesse felt no joy in the success, after all, making the imp unable to resist was cheating.
I really don’t have a natural talent for magic spells, and I struggle to use Counterspell effectively.
Instead of trying to counter a regular mage’s magic spells, it might be quicker and more accurate to use Shadowflame to stop them, even if it’s a bit brutal.
If even Shadowflame can’t disrupt the enemy mage’s spellcasting, then countering a high-level mage’s spells would be as difficult as moving a giant boulder.
I might even have my own Counterspell reversed by the enemy.
"Let’s call it a day," he told the imp. "Go rest up, and I’ll think about how to train better."
In the evening, Jesse and Greed arrived at the Pig and Whistle Tavern in Stormwind. Even though it was already past 8 o’clock, the tavern was bustling with workers, travelers, and mercenaries boasting and enjoying their meals and drinks.
Every seat was taken, so the two had to lean against the window, using the windowsill as a makeshift table for their drinks. Despite the bloody appearance and strong smell of Thelsamar blood sausage, Jesse couldn’t stop thinking about it since the last time he had it in Stormwind.
This time at the Pig and Whistle Tavern, he couldn’t resist ordering a plate of Thelsamar blood sausage again, while Greed opted for cornbread. They stood by the window with their plates, taking turns eating.
"There’s trouble with Kobolds in Goldshire again. Did you know they’ve been harassing the miners?" Greed dipped his soft cornbread into the sausage sauce, took a bite, and said, "I plan on checking it out. Catching a Kobold could earn us 4 silver coins. Are you coming?"
Jesse used a dragon tooth dagger to cut a piece of blood sausage, put it in his mouth, chewed and said, "I’m not going, my teacher assigned me a task to go to Moonbrook. Why do you suddenly want to go deal with the Kobolds?"
"The key is in the mine, Jesse," Greed said. "Legends say it’s about honoring our ancestors… getting as close to the earth as possible. Going into the mine to battle those little rascals will surely be beneficial for my training."
Jesse said, "I highly doubt there’s any real training in picking on Kobolds who are not even as tall as you." Greed chuckled, Jesse chewed on some blood sausage, smacked his lips, and said, "This really lacks flavor. Although I found the blood sausage in Thelsamar strange when I ate there, and the gamey taste got even stronger when drinking alcohol, I found it hard to accept. But coming back and eating the version here, I just feel it’s so much worse."
"Exactly," Greed took another bite of bread and said, "But you’ll slowly get used to the wine and meat in Stormwind again, just like I’ve been here for so long, almost forgetting the taste of Aerie Peak."
"That sounds really sad," Jesse shook his head looking at the lively crowd in front of him.
"Need help going to Moonbrook?" Greed asked.
"No, I just need to deliver a document to the mayor there, nothing else to do." Jesse thought for a moment and said, "Can’t possibly have me go after rescuing the town mayor from the Gnoll bandits, or being kidnapped by a thief gang, right? I can’t be that unlucky."
Greed couldn’t help but laugh, "That’s good, you can make a little extra money along the way."
However, thinking about the bandits in Moonbrook, Jesse suddenly remembered what Ursula had told him at that time.
Those are the warlocks of Moonbrook… Maybe that one called Mor’zul is also in Moonbrook.
Is this a chance to meet him?
Mor’zul looking down on the warlocks of the Dagger Association, will he be impressed by the warlocks of Moonbrook? If not, what new things has he figured out all this time?
Thinking this, he secretly decided to first inquire about the situation after going there.
But how can he find out about the warlocks… How?
The reason he could find The Slaughtered Lamb is that he already knew there was a group of warlocks in the basement there, but Moonbrook was initially an abandoned desolate town because of the Defias disturbances in the game. Even after it was later recaptured by Stormwind, for a long time it was just a place under reconstruction where few people were willing to go.
Regardless of the condition, it was very different from the bustling mining towns in the center of the whole western region now.
In such a not-so-small town, finding a group of Black Magic practitioners deliberately hiding themselves surely wasn’t an easy task.
Wait, doesn’t he know how to Detect Demon?
Go and take a look, then you will know.
Thinking about this, Jesse raised his eyebrows.
