Chapter 373: Underground Siege
Faced with the sudden death of the old elder, the Stonepelt Tribe screamed as if they had been startled, waving their weapons as they surged forward towards the steps. The dark mass of creatures looked like a seething tide under the light of the Azuresong Mageblade, their eyes resembling mysterious deep-sea fish hidden within the tide.
Jesse calmly clenched his fist and chanted a spell, casting a dark red Scorch Curse at the nearest Rockjaw Trogg. The flames, blessed by the Azuresong Mageblade, bloomed like a lotus on the creature and knocked down four to five nearby Rockjaw Troggs. Their falls tripped up more shadows rushing behind them, disrupting the onwards rush of monsters.
However, more and more creatures treaded over the fallen to continue forward.
As the monsters approached the steps, Jesse raised his magic wand and sang a Fear spell. The monsters that were previously crazily climbing the stairs stopped in their tracks, trying to retreat. Some even pushed those behind them to step back. A few brave ones still charged forward, only to be greeted by another Scorch Curse exploding at their feet, sending their flesh flying.
Daggett leaned against a slab, unable to move, clearly affected by the Fear. He stared intently at the Rockjaw Troggs charging up from below.
Suddenly, a lightning bolt flashed in the distance, causing Jesse to feel a tingling sensation all over his body, followed by an unbearable pain. Despite this, he shook off the pain, focused, and identified the source of the lightning.
The Mage Armor provided enough protection, preventing him from sustaining serious injuries. Looking over, a Shaman climbed onto a nearby rock, casting a spell towards Jesse. Meanwhile, the Rockjaw Troggs below were in disarray due to the fallen ones and their fear. Jesse pointed at the Rockjaw Trogg Shaman and immediately used Life Drain. Surprisingly, after draining only half of the Shaman’s life force, he became too weak and slipped off the rock, losing his target and breaking the spell.
However, even that drain was enough to recover from the lightning bolt he had endured.
At that moment, a Rockjaw Trogg wielding a hammer broke through the chaotic crowd and ascended the steps. Jesse struck its skull with his magic wand, crushing it in a single blow, leaving the creature convulsing on the stairs.
He shook the sword in his hand and shouted below, "Come, fight me in close combat!"
The impact of this blow was indeed effective. The Rockjaw Troggs below, who were still thinking of rushing up to fight desperately, suddenly realized that the mage above had great strength. This caused the crowd rushing up to become even more chaotic.
Seizing this opportunity, Jesse once again cast a Scorch Curse into the crowded group of Rockjaw Troggs. The explosion hit many of them, causing flames to erupt from their clothes. They were covered in purple blood tainted by shadows, screaming and trying to escape backward, but they were too crowded to move and could only struggle in place.
In a moment, a Rockjaw Trogg almost as tall as Kul Tiran pushed aside his companions and charged up the steps holding a war hammer. This guy was not a mere minion, but a true warrior, possibly even a minor leader. Before reaching Jesse, he had already swung the long-handled stone hammer in his hand!
Jesse pushed Daggett aside and murmured, "Thom Soga S, Wiholisya, Vasdaang…" A shield of darkness that was unclear in the interweaving light and shadow surrounded Jesse. The tall Rockjaw Trogg warrior swung his hammer down onto the shield, like hitting a soft fabric that rebounded. Then he was pushed back by a wave of shadow, almost slipping on the steps.
His face and body were already torn apart by shadows, covered in corroded wounds, but he still stood straight, raising the stone hammer in his hand once again.
Just as he was about to swing it again, Jesse stabbed him in the chest with a sword, causing his eyes to lose focus as he staggered backwards.
Jesse forcefully pulled out the sword, and the magical light emitted from Azuresong Mageblade instantly tore through the Rockjaw Trogg’s side. He swung the sword directly towards the face of another monster that had already charged over, cleaving off half of its head. Then he swung the sword towards another Rockjaw Trogg wielding a Dark Iron cleaver, cutting off its arm. When it howled in pain, Jesse kicked it down.
The Rockjaw Trogg stepped over the bodies of its companions and charged up again, only to be killed one by one by Jesse. Daggett assisted by stabbing down the Rockjaw Troggs attempting to climb up the side of the steps.
At that moment, a mean Rockjaw Trogg far ahead, tried to throw rocks down from the stairs. Jesse used a stick to smash the Rockjaw Trogg nearby holding a small chisel, then turned around and casted a Scorch Curse spell at it. Suddenly, he felt like he got punched and coughed, and the gathering fire element dispersed instantly.
Another Shaman appeared in the distance, holding a totem that emitted a faint green light, as if healing someone, but it was unclear who was being healed.
Jesse reached out with his stick and used Gorefiend’s Grasp, causing the Shaman’s arm and ear to be torn by a blood-red light, making him uncontrollably fly over.
Initially planning to stab the Shaman with a sword, but the Shaman seemed heavy and ended up falling off the edge of the stairs with a loud cracking sound as his bones broke.
Although Jesse successfully defeated the Shaman, the interruption of the magic made him even more exhausted due to the already significant exertion.
He instinctively stabbed the head of another charging Rockjaw Trogg with his sword, but even with a pierced head, the Rockjaw Trogg managed to hit Jesse on the side with a hammer.
While not serious, the blow caused Jesse to lose his balance slightly and stagger.
Lowering his gaze, Jesse saw more than a dozen bodies piled on the stairs. To maintain his advantage and avoid being attacked by monsters, he reluctantly stepped on the bodies to continue his fight with the approaching creatures.
The ground was uneven, his magic power was depleted, his stamina was running low, and there were enemies climbing up towards him in the dark. Daggett struggled to push them down one by one, while the dwarf who was previously roaring to cheer himself up, now seemed a bit discouraged.
Also, these creatures seemed to notice that Jesse was getting tired, so they became more excited and started shouting loudly, with various strange screams echoing in the cave.
Just then, the stone door behind them shook.
The Rockjaw Trogg, who were charging forward, were momentarily stunned.
Jesse took the opportunity to stab and kill one of the creatures nearby with his sword, pushed the body down, then stepped back to the door, which was slowly opening.
He was uncertain whether to deal with the monsters below the stairs or the problem behind the door.
While the monsters were hesitating, unsure of whether to charge, he glanced inside the door and saw a "dwarf" of similar height walking out.
The dwarf was bare-chested, wearing only a half-broken, loosely hanging belt and tattered leather pants barely covering him.
His skin was pale gray, covered with scars and markings on his shoulders and chest, and his eyes were no longer eyeballs but were emitting a glowing arcane light.
He was carrying a war hammer and a stone axe of unknown origin, slowly approaching Jesse, each step accompanied by a sound like the impact of stones.
"Jesse," the dwarf struggled to say this name, it seemed hard for him to say another word.
Jesse nodded, leaned against the door, took a breath, and said, "Clean up these things below, quickly…"
Greed stared at the Rockjaw Trogg below for a while, lifted two weapons, took a couple of steps down, and the Rockjaw Troggs in front hesitantly stepped back.
A tall Rockjaw Trogg with a long stick roared and rushed forward, hitting Greed’s head hard with the stick. There was a loud crack as the stick broke, but Greed did not even flinch, standing still like a statue on the steps.
His warhammer suddenly sparked with electricity, and he struck the Rockjaw Trogg, sending it flying into the nearby stone wall. All Rockjaw Troggs, awakened by the blow, screamed and fled in panic, leaving only bodies scattered on the ground in the cave.
