Chapter 368: The Gate of Ruins
Jesse could only crawl out of this low and inconspicuous rock crevice, and in the end, he was pulled into the passage by two dwarfs.
By the light of the fire basin, Daggett quickly drilled into the depths of the passage. Jesse looked at the various branches, caves, and complex deep trenches, thinking that it would have been much more troublesome if they hadn’t found this guide.
Seeing Greed constantly scanning the surroundings, he might have similar thoughts too.
After walking for a while, Daggett held out his arm to stop the two of them, glanced at an opening, then pulled back and extended two fingers, probably indicating that there were two dwarfs watching over there.
Jesse tilted his head and saw two Dark Iron Dwarves wearing linen vests walking towards a blue stone wall in the distance.
Seeing the blue stone wall meant they were almost at the entrance to the temple of Uldaman.
After the two dwarves left, Daggett continued leading the group along the stone wall until they came out of a narrow opening. Hiding behind a crate, Jesse heard the voices of four or five Dark Iron Dwarves talking up ahead.
"You said you have an Invisibility Potion, now is the time to use it," Daggett whispered, "The entrance to the temple is just ahead. Once you go in, there will be a long narrow passage on the right that leads to a corner with a stone pillar."
"Hold on a minute," Greed asked quietly, "Are you sure your description is accurate enough? We can’t afford to miss anything important and rush in blindly."
"I have described it as detailed as possible," Daggett replied, "I remember it very clearly. After passing by, look for the stone pillar first. Next to the pillar, there is a broken wall that is easy to spot. We will regroup inside that broken wall after the Invisibility Potion wears off, and then make a plan."
"If we don’t want to be discovered, our only option is to fight our way out," Daggett said, "I believe with your strength, both of you can break through a group of laborers easily. But if any Dark Iron Dwarves run back to the Fortress of Pain, our mission will be in vain, and we must give up and leave."
"So, where is the thing you’re looking for?" Jesse asked.
"It’s inside, we are very close now," Daggett replied.
Jesse nodded and said, "Let’s do it this way."
The three of them took turns peeking out slowly to observe the surroundings. Jesse looked over and noticed that, similar to the game, two huge blue stone doors were slightly ajar, revealing a long staircase leading down.
The Dark Iron Dwarves had set up camp below the staircase and on the nearby high steps. There were sandbag barricades and guns below to deal with any Rockjaw Troggs that came out.
From their view, there were only four dwarves guarding the camp. Most of the Dark Iron Dwarves must have gone out to move things.
Once they confirmed the general direction, the three of them took out Invisibility Potions and drank them. They counted down together: three, two, one.
As their vision gradually blurred, Jesse immediately dashed out towards the steps, passing through the center of the Dark Iron Dwarves’ camp. With the experience of drinking the Invisibility Potion before, he could roughly see the buildings in front of him by the light of the braziers.
However, he couldn’t identify where the Dark Iron Dwarves were just by looking with his eyes; instead, he had to rely on memory to avoid them.
Despite being able to roughly see the walls and tents, once he climbed the steps, the scattered light and shadows made it impossible for him to tell if he was stepping on the steps. He stumbled several times but eventually managed to crawl and run to the side of the slightly open door.
Upon entering, there was suddenly more light and shadows. Despite the blurry vision, he could feel that it was an empty hall.
Following Daggett’s instructions, he ran to the right and entered a passage. As he neared the end, he felt the Invisibility Potion wearing off, and the things in front of him slowly became clearer.
He climbed onto a stone pillar and saw a peeling wall behind it. Going around, he indeed found a crack.
After bending down and entering, Daggett was already waiting inside.
Before long, Greed also bent down and crawled in.
"Did someone follow us?" Daggett asked in a low voice.
"I’m not sure," Greed peeked outside and looked around quietly for a while to make sure there were no footsteps. Then he said, "It should be fine. Are there Dark Iron people inside? I mean, in this temple inside the big door."
Daggett replied, "It seems so. It looks like they haven’t dealt with the Rockjaw Trogg trouble, which means the Orc War is affecting more than just us."
Jesse glanced outside and looked at the tall walls, saying, "We’ve already entered this temple, Greed. Can you feel the difference here compared to Ironband Excavation Site… or the other ruins you’ve been to before?"
Greed leaned out to touch the stone pillar in front of him and said, "I… feel like there’s something a bit different, but I can’t quite explain it."
"But we’re too close to the Dark Iron Dwarves here, and probably not far from the Trogs either, as this could be a battleground for both sides." Jesse said, "Let’s search further inside, Mr. Daggett, where exactly are you looking for?"
"On the south side of this hall, there’s a cave dug out by a Trogg," Daggett said, "That’s where I need to go."
"South…" Jesse said, "You’d better say left or right."
Daggett nodded, glanced outside, and pointed to the corridor beyond the next corner, "Keep going straight from here, then turn left at the next corner ahead to reach the front hall of the temple. Continue straight into another passage and turn right at the corner to find a cracked wall. There’s a dirt crevice in the wall that leads to the place I mentioned."
"Once we ventured deep into that cave and discovered some relics piled up, but later the Trogs took over it. We tried to reclaim it but failed, losing a companion in the process. At that time, there were too few of us exploring this ruins, we underestimated the danger here."
Hearing Daggett’s words, Jesse felt a sense of familiarity. He sensed that Uldaman here seemed to have a similar architectural structure to the game, with several corridors around the hall.
At this, Daggett pulled out his dagger from his waist, saying, "We’ll soon be facing those cave-dwelling Rockjaw Trogs."
Jesse handed the Bronzebeard Dwarf a bottle of Nature Protection Potion, saying, "Better safe than sorry."
Daggett looked at the potion and remarked, "The mages of Stormwind are truly knowledgeable. The cursed Trogg mages have none of the humility and kindness of the Wildhammer Sages. The elemental power they summon is as fierce and crude as they are."
"Now it’s time to show them what real anger and rudeness mean, Daggett," Greed said as he held his hammer. "I’ll lead the way."
