Chapter 367: Excavation Site
The three of them hurried for less than two hours, before dawn, on a vast flat sandy plain, Jesse could see from afar a huge cliff with collapsed pillars and statues scattered around.
"We’re here," Daggett reminded.
This is Uldaman, Jesse felt a sense of familiarity with the surroundings.
He and two dwarves crouched on a high hill peeking into the distance, the Dark Iron Dwarves in the excavation site seemed to be urgently moving boxes, tools and other things into the cave, busy with commands and shouts, completely unlike the sleepy race they were supposed to be in the early hours of the morning.
"Don’t they ever sleep?" Greed grinned and said, "If we hadn’t taken a nap for the whole night to travel, I would definitely be too sleepy to keep my eyes open now. Just looking at this dark sky makes me a bit tired."
"Is it because of that black dragon?" Jesse asked. "Look, they keep moving things into the cave as if they were trying to avoid something."
"Hasn’t the Black Dragon already gone?" asked Greed.
"Maybe they think that Black Dragon might come back," Jesse said.
Daggett said, "It feels like there are fewer people here compared to last time I visited. Even if they are not worried about the Black Dragon, they are probably concerned about the Orcs in the wasteland. But we don’t have to enter from the front. The Troggs who wanted to leave the ruins have dug out many passages here. The Explorer Association has renovated two of them. One leads to a deeper place and is well hidden, while the other is more obvious and could be easily found by the Dark Iron Dwarves."
"Can that backdoor avoid the Dark Iron Dwarves?" Jesse asked.
Daggett shook his head and said, "There will probably be Dark Iron Dwarves waiting for us inside. We still need to be careful, as they may have dug much further than we think."
Greed replied, "That’s good enough, much better than rushing in from the front."
Jesse nodded, knowing that there was also a backdoor in the Uldaman dungeon in the game, but it was likely different from the passage Daggett mentioned.
The three of them walked along the mountains, trying to stay far away from the excavation sites of Uldaman. Greed followed Daggett closely and turned back to ask Jesse, "What was that dragon here for, after all?"
Jesse explained, "If the Black Dragon plans to ally with the Orcs in Blackrock Spire, helping the Blackrock Clan intimidate the Dark Iron Dwarves might also be a possibility."
"What a perfect match," Greed said with a chuckle.
Jesse looked at Bronzebeard Dwarf and asked, "When you left, how far had you dug?"
Daggett replied, "We found the location of the main gate, but before we could go deeper, we encountered Troggs. It seemed like the Troggs had been living there as if they were the servants of the creators of the temple."
"Servants of the gods," Greed said, "Are you saying those stone giants, like the ones standing in the Ironband Excavation Site?"
Daggett said, "I’m not sure, but since those huge statues are everywhere, it’s a possibility. I really want to see what a living stone giant looks like, of course not a Mountain Giant, I don’t want to encounter one of those."
As the day began to dawn, the three finally arrived near a crumpled-like slope and gully. Daggett looked at the cliffs here for a moment and said, "The good news is that there are no Dark Iron Dwarves watching, which means they haven’t discovered this path yet. The bad news is, this place looks different from the last time I came here."
Greed scratched his head and said, "Should we go check somewhere else? Didn’t you mention there was more than one path?"
"Don’t worry, I’ll go check it out," Daggett walked into one of the gullies, looked around, then walked out and entered another one.
Jesse and Greed kept watch outside, discussing how to find an opportunity to enter the excavation site. Suddenly, Daggett called out, "Over here, come."
The two people quickly ran over and saw Daggett standing next to an entrance that looked like a water well, holding the cover of the well.
They walked closer and saw a metal ladder leading straight down into the dark shadows below.
Even though there were no sounds coming from inside, it should still be safe if the Dark Iron Dwarves haven’t discovered this place yet.
"Have the Dark Iron Dwarves not found this place in recent years?" Jesse asked.
Greed replied, "Maybe the entrance has been blocked off."
Daggett nodded and said, "This passage is indeed easy to block off, but I know what the issue is."
The three of them climbed down the ladder and reached the dark bottom through a narrow and long tunnel, feeling the soft sand under their feet. They could only see this small space faintly lit by the light from the well above.
Jesse took out Azuresong Mageblade, and the Arcane light illuminated the area, revealing two dwarf skeletons lying in this cramped room.
The Bronzebeard Dwarf led the two people through a dark passage to a dead end, then looked at the pile of rubble in front of them and said, "Let’s move these rocks together."
Three people were carrying on, suddenly feeling the stone in front loosen a bit.
"Hey, put away your sword, human!"
Daggett whispered, Jesse put away his sword, and the dwarf moved a stone slab up front. After a sound of collapsing sand, a faint light that flickered on and off appeared.
Jesse looked through the crack in the stone and saw a flickering small brazier in the distance. In such a dark environment, even a tiny bit of light seemed very clear.
Daggett said, "Move this larger one aside, we should be able to squeeze through. I know this passage well, I’ll go over first to make sure it’s safe, then you can follow."
"Anyway, prepare the Invisibility Potion first." Jesse gave each dwarf a bottle and said, "Keep it where it’s easy to grab. If we’re in a situation we can’t escape from, we’ll rely on this to get away. Have you both drunk Invisibility Potion before?"
"I’ve drunk it a few times." Greed nodded and said, "But the last time was a very long time ago."
Daggett said, "I used to drink it regularly before I joined the Ironband Excavation Site. If I remember correctly, after drinking this, you can hardly see anything."
"Can hardly see anything?" Greed muttered, "I still think you can see some things."
"Almost," Jesse said. "It seems like I have the least experience here. I have only been here once, but as long as I remember the terrain beforehand… we can get past the dangerous areas."
Jesse and Greed nodded, and as they slowly pushed aside a huge rock below with Daggett, they opened a gap that a dwarf could barely squeeze through. After that, Daggett slowly moved inside.
Jesse peeked outside and watched as Daggett’s shadow slowly moved away. There was no reaction outside, but he could hear distant dwarf voices, although they were not very clear.
After a while, Daggett walked over, waved his hand, and said, "Most of them are busy organizing the things brought in from outside. Let’s take this opportunity to go in."
