Chapter 365: Ruler of the Badlands
Despite having a water source, the three people decided to be cautious, resting in a shaded area during the hottest part of the day, and continuing their journey when it got darker.
However, in the Badlands, it was clear that they were not the only ones thinking this way.
During the day, on the vast wasteland, occasionally in the evening, they could see shadows of three or four walking from afar, some were sand wolves, some were packs of wild wolves, and some were hungry wild boars.
It wasn’t just an occasional occurrence. Shortly after entering the wilderness, when the sky darkened, they encountered several groups of such unexpected visitors, different groups of animals even confront each other due to some strange "tracking rights" until the three people slowly walked away.
After all, these animals couldn’t provoke the Dark Iron Dwarves, or even the Orcs wandering in this area, so they could only bully these relatively solitary groups of travelers.
Of course, the groups of travelers who could enter here as a team were not ordinary people. The animals struggling to survive in this wilderness for hundreds of years understood this principle, so they just followed along, searching for opportunities to test, or even ambush.
Or wait for them to run out of food and lose hope, then attack.
"These animals," Greed muttered, "come and try your luck."
"There are so many of them, Mr. Greed," Daggett looked at him and said, "ignore them. If we get hurt in a fight, it will seriously slow us down."
Greed said, "If these pus bags could beat us, they would have tried to attack us by now."
Daggett looked ahead and said, "Don’t worry, I have already spotted some very familiar-shaped hills and the direction seems right. I think by morning, we should see the ruins beyond the ruins."
"Thank goodness we have you as our guide, Daggett," Greed said. "I never realized how far away that ruin was from Loch Modan!"
Jesse said, "The maps here are all drawn very vaguely, not many people probably know how big this place really is."
"That’s true," Daggett said, walking up a slope, "both dwarves and humans’ maps make this place look smaller. After all, they all rely on estimates. Nobody really wants to measure this place accurately. Even Gryphon Riders don’t dare fly deep into this area with their beloved mounts. The ones who probably know the true extent of this place are the Dark Iron Tribe."
At that moment, Greed stopped and turned back, asking, "Have you noticed that all the animals are gone?"
Jesse nodded and looked towards the southwest, the direction leading deep into the desert. The shadows they were following had all disappeared by now.
Although there were no animals, he could see dust flying up in the distance, creating a hazy, dark cloud.
"Is a sandstorm coming?" Jesse asked. "Shouldn’t we find a place to hide?"
Daggett looked in that direction and whispered, "The wind doesn’t seem that strong, but over there… oh my goodness…"
As he turned back, a whirlwind swept towards them, making their clothes and capes flutter wildly, causing them to struggle to stand steady.
However, this wind didn’t seem natural. It blew for a while and then suddenly disappeared, but the distant sandy haze was getting closer.
"Something’s not right," Greed said. "I smell a strange odor in this wind."
"I smell it too," Jesse said. "It’s the shadow."
"Shadow?" Daggett looked puzzled for a moment.
Greed said, "Hide, find a place to hide, damn it!"
The three of them immediately ran in the opposite direction with all their might, heading towards a sandy ditch dozens of meters ahead.
Greed was the first to dive into the pile of rocks in the ditch, the wind outside intermittently blowing, gradually increasing in intensity. Daggett also furrowed his brow, clearly smelling it too.
In fact, upon smelling this scent, Jesse already had a suspicion in his heart.
After all, he had smelled this unique dark shadowy scent before, but considering the strength of the wind… he couldn’t connect that suspicion to what they were facing now. Jesse glanced at Greed and noticed that Greed was staring at him too.
"Black dragon!"
Both of them exclaimed simultaneously.
Daggett widened his eyes and lowered his voice, asking, "What are you talking about, the black dragon of the wilderness?"
But if this was a black dragon, it could not possibly be a simple young dragon.
The young dragon was strong, but it couldn’t feel the powerful presence without even seeing the shadow of a dragon.
Even now, with a great commotion of sand and dust outside, they still hadn’t seen anything.
However, the scent of the black dragon was becoming clearer and clearer.
The three of them huddled near a pile of rocks without making a sound. Suddenly, a strong wind blew from afar, followed by a loud noise. The dust stirred up by the wind made Jesse feel the large rocks outside trembling and shaking.
The gravel and debris kept hitting the large rocks they were relying on, making sounds. Jesse could feel the vibrations of the rock behind him with each impact.
If it weren’t for the rocks blocking the wind, they might have been blown away by now.
However, the evil wind only passed by without causing more trouble.
Before Greed could peek outside to check the situation, the sky suddenly darkened. Jesse looked up and saw a blurry black figure soaring high in the sky through the dusty air, its massive wings covering the vast sky and slowly passing over the three of them.
Greed covered his mouth, while Daggett stayed huddled under the rock, too afraid to move.
What is this thing?! Why is it so big?
Jesse found it hard to describe the size of the creature, as he didn’t know how high it could fly.
Judging by the shape of its wings, this was definitely not a baby dragon, but a huge adult dragon.
Deep down, Jesse even hoped that this creature was the real Deathwing, or at least an ancient dragon like Nefarian.
Because if not… who knows what would happen when the ancestors of the Blackwing Legion appeared? Would the world turn dark and colorless?
But he knew it couldn’t be possible. If it really was Nefarian, he wouldn’t have missed noticing the three hidden figures in the corner.
Or perhaps he just didn’t care.
The so-called sandstorm seemed to have calmed down by now.
The air was still a bit hazy, but much quieter than before. Daggett sat up, brushed off the sand, and asked, "Are you all okay?"
Jesse spit out the sand stuck on his lips, shook his cloak, and said, "It’s okay."
Three people were tidying up their luggage when suddenly there was a loud rumble, as if some sand or rocks were collapsing.
Greed paused, turned around to look in the direction where the sound of rocks splitting came from.
"Why do I feel like I hear rocks talking?"
"I… ta… sa…"
"Kud… Sadosak!"
A series of deep, muffled hums came from behind a huge rock, a pair of burning eyes suddenly flashed, carrying a hot stone floating into the air, spinning to form a cluster of stone monsters linked by flaming magic!
Is it an earth elemental?!
