Chapter 364: The Premise of Entering the Wilderness
The three rested at the Ironband Excavation Site for a night, packed provisions and set off the next day.
On the way, Daggett kept a copper stick as a cane, a small chisel hanging from his waist, and carried a dagger. His sturdy figure seemed no less impressive than Greed’s.
Members of the Explorer Association are not just simple scholars or archaeologists. In fact, there are some among them who joined the Explorer Association to venture into ancient ruins and fight monsters unknown to the world.
"I’ve always wanted to know, Daggett," Greed asked, "Is Muradin Bronzebeard, your king’s brother, also a member of the Explorer Association?"
"He is not just a member, but also one of the leaders, just like his brother Brian." Delant walked and said, "Why, do you also want to join the Explorer Association? There are indeed outsiders in the association, not just me making things up. We have worked with all kinds of outsider guides during our expeditions, humans, Gnomish, and even trolls… So of course we can also accept the Wildhammer brothers. But in reality, we still follow King Magni’s command, are you sure you can accept this?"
"It sounds quite appealing, but for now I do not have that plan," Greed said, "I’m curious, how did Muradin learn the descent of the gods? Did he find that ancient power in Dun Morogh or in the ruins near the Ironband Excavation Site?"
"Neither of those," Daggett turned and said, "He found it from the ruins of Northrend."
Jesse asked in surprise, "He has been to Northrend?"
Daggett stopped and said, "The Explorer Association has been interested in the ancient ruins of Northrend for a long time. They have even discovered many ancient relics left behind thousands of years ago from the side of Dun Morogh, not to mention the northern mountains that are covered in snow all year round. Lord Muradin found that power in the ancient ruins of Northrend."
Greed nodded and said, "No wonder he is so powerful, Northrend must have larger temple ruins than the Ironband Excavation Site, containing more ancient divine power."
"That’s what they say, but so far no one has ventured deep into those mountains," Daggett said.
Traveling south along the road, passing through a canyon, Jesse began to feel the air getting stranger.
When walking north from Lakeshire to Redridge, he had caught a faint smell of burning.
Many dwarf geologists believe that the Badlands didn’t naturally look like this and were also influenced by the explosion of Blackrock Mountain.
The tall mountains of the Redridge Mountains protect the people around Lake Everstill, but the lower hills to the north couldn’t stop the heat waves from Blackrock Mountain eroding northward all year round, until they were completely blocked by the mountains of Dun Morogh, turning the dry grasslands in between into a dead land.
When it got dark, the three people found a spot to rest in a rocky crevice in the canyon. After Daggett set up a sleeping spot, he looked at Jesse and said, "You’re a mage, right? With you around, traveling in the desert shouldn’t be a problem."
"What?" Jesse said. "Wait, what do you mean?"
"Water-making spells, obviously," Daggett said. "You seem to be a skilled mage, with that kind of magic wand, and I think you’re quite confident."
"Do we not have enough water with us?" Jesse said. "Isn’t the excavation site close to Loch Modan in the northern barren land?"
"It’s not that far, compared to the size of the entire barren land," Daggett said. "But you can’t expect a smooth journey through these sandy lands without any unforeseen events… If we encounter problems, like bad weather, sandstorms, sneak attacks by giant scorpions, or even worse accidents… delaying for two days, the water supply might not be enough."
Greed sighed and said, "But it’s clear that our mage here is better at killing than providing any extra help to the team."
"Alright," Daggett sat down and said, "I am confident that we can find the location of that ruin within a day or two, give or take."
"We can take someone else’s water," Greed reminded, "Once we reach the Dark Iron Dwarves, maybe we can find a way to get their water."
Daggett said, "Let’s try to avoid fighting as much as possible. We don’t want those Dark Irons running back to their stronghold for reinforcements, that would be big trouble for us. We still haven’t entered the wastelands yet, so we still have a chance to go back to Thelsamar. We need to decide if we should go back to get more water or not."
"Sleep during the hot days and move at night, that way we can save more," Greed added.
"That’s indeed a good choice, but it will be slower," Daggett nodded.
"Okay, enough talking," Jesse stood up, straightened her robes, and said, "Give me one more chance, let me try again."
"What did you say?" Greed asked, raising his head, "To burn one of our water bags again?"
"Burn a water bag, what do you mean?" Daggett asked.
"We won’t need a water bag this time. I’ll try it on an open space, okay? If it doesn’t work, we’ll go back to Thelsamar for more water."
Jesse walked to the side, found a large rock with a hollow in the middle, and took a deep breath, trying something.
"What is he going to do?" Daggett asked Greed.
"Fire magic," Greed said helplessly.
"Hmph," Jesse glanced at him, drew Azuresong Mageblade, and the Arcane light suddenly illuminated the crevice.
Daggett blinked and asked, "What is this now…"
"It’s proof of a skilled mage," Jesse said.
"There’s no need for this, Jesse, I was just kidding. Take it easy."
Greed lifted his butt and took a step back, looking for cover behind a rock as if he was about to face a storm of flames.
"It is very necessary," Jesse said, pointing his sword towards the rock hollow, chanting, "Ward, Tika, Celtic!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the light of the demon sword flashed, and multiple ice thorns shot out from the rock, forming a cluster of ice spikes the size of human heads in front of him!
Jesse was surprised by the magic he had cast, even though the spell was complete. The ice shards were still growing and reaching upwards, like bamboo shoots growing rapidly. The surrounding cold air eventually covered the entire stone surface with a layer of ice.
"How about that, Greed? Pyrokinesis, right?" Jesse turned to look at the two dwarves who were shocked by the sudden appearance of ice spikes and said, "Let’s knock a few unfilled water bags."
