Chapter 036: Touching the Darkness
An hour’s worth of potion would have worn off by the time he reached Old Town, it could take about half an hour from here.
Climbing uphill, walking up stairs, crossing the canal, moving along the winding alleys, when Jesse saw the gates of Old Town, he felt like he was about to collapse.
It was already dark and only then did he have time to read the words on the note.
"Across the street from Limited Protection, on the left side of the second floor."
It took about ten minutes to get around and finally see the storefront of Limited Protection. The sky was getting dark, making it hard to see the sign clearly.
Across the street was an inconspicuous little building. Jesse had no watch, so he could only guess how much longer it would be based on his feelings.
When the medicine’s effects start to fade, there will be a warm feeling on the face, and tears may flow. If these signs appear, it means there is less than 20 minutes of medicine left.
There are no similar feelings at the moment, so there is still time.
He climbed to the second floor and arrived at the door on the left side. From the window on the other side, he could see that there was light inside, and someone was there.
Jesse knocked on the door, feeling anxious as the medicine was wearing off. He forgot his manners and said directly, "Surena, open the door. I’m Jesse Seso. Do you remember me? It’s been a week…"
Before he could finish speaking, the door was suddenly pushed open, and a middle-aged man appeared in the doorway.
The man was wearing shorts and only a white tank top. He looked at Jesse with a face full of barely contained anger, as if he was looking at an enemy.
He turned his face and asked the person inside, "Surena Caledon, who is this person?"
"How would I know?"
Surena, holding a robe to cover his naked upper body, moved closer to the door and glanced at Jesse, saying, "He’s a little kid, trying to make money by practicing with us."
"Really?" the man asked coldly.
"Gakin… dear, how can you doubt me?" Surena charmingly leaned against the man, running his fingers lightly over his lower abdomen. Even the robe he was holding slipped off, revealing his bare black chest. Jesse awkwardly lowered his head.
"What’s the point of being shy around this innocent kid? Would I betray you for such a little thing? Gakin, you are the most powerful among us, only you can lead us on the right path. I know that better than anyone."
After speaking, Surena turned his face and coldly said, "If you have any sense, you’ll leave quickly. I don’t understand why you came here so late."
Jesse thought about his medicine about to expire soon, and hearing these two talking about him like that, he was already angry. Before he could react, the man called Gakin suddenly said, "Hold on, kid, you want to earn money, right? I happen to have a new spell here, try it out for me, and I’ll give you these 2 silver coins."
After speaking, he chuckled maliciously.
Jesse knew he was going to have a showdown with himself for sure. This man must think he was having an affair with a woman named Surena, so he wanted to teach Jesse a lesson.
Even if that wasn’t the case, he could also give Surena a warning at the same time.
At that moment, Jesse finally remembered a few things about these people.
In the game, a man named Gakin was also one of the leaders of The Slaughtered Lamb’s underground warlocks, but he looked much older in the game.
This Surena Caledon was his student and also his lover in secret, but in the end, she eloped with a petty thief, taking with her a precious bloodstone necklace.
In the game, Gakin would ask warlock players to go to a farm to kill Surena and her lover, and recover the bloodstone necklace.
This guy had been cuckolded for years, starting from more than a decade ago, and still hadn’t realized it?
Since he had the Shadow Protection Potion, he couldn’t waste it. This warlock wanted to go big for himself, and it was the perfect opportunity to learn the most powerful spells from these people.
"Go to the street," Gakin said. "So that this imp doesn’t fear I might kill him."
"Aren’t you afraid of being seen?" Surena hesitated.
"You come over here too," Gakin said to her. "Let me show you the new spell I’ve mastered to deal with your little friend."
"How many times do I have to say it before you believe me?" Surena was angry, her hand trembling. She glared at Jesse, then turned and went back inside to change clothes.
Gakin grabbed a shirt and left without waiting for Surena, walking straight down the stairs.
The three of them reached the street. There weren’t many people around, just a few passersby and some workers sitting outside a building drinking.
Jesse looked serious, worried that Gakin’s magic might exceed expectations and the potion’s effects would wear off too quickly.
Gakin laughed and said, "You’re so timid. I don’t need to risk someone’s life over this. Just make sure you’re ready for me."
"Hurry up, no time for nonsense," Jesse said. "Don’t forget the two silver coins."
"As you wish," Gakin said, putting away his smile. He didn’t have a magic wand or any other tools for casting spells. He simply made a simple gesture with his hands, muttering a short incantation under his breath.
Even though it was short, Jesse still remembered clearly, it was probably "Fereckert".
He repeated it over and over again to avoid forgetting, while closely watching Gakin, feeling any possible pain or harm that he might experience.
Before long, he started feeling anxious, watching Gakin’s confident appearance, he began to worry more and more that the other person might kill him.
Jesse glanced back at a few men drinking around the street corner, making sure they could see what was happening here, and preparing to run to them for help if he couldn’t bear the harm.
However, he soon realized that even with all his preparations, he couldn’t calm down.
Jesse felt his palms were all sweat, but there was no pain, no fainting, or nausea.
Did the spell work? Why was he so nervous?
The surrounding voices became quieter, he just kept chanting "Fereckert, Fereckert…" afraid of forgetting, afraid of coming here for nothing, afraid that the Shadow Protection Potion would be wasted.
He felt his face heating up, turning red, his eyes getting moist, this was the feeling when the Shadow Protection Potion was about to expire, he still remembered.
He started to worry that if the Shadow Protection Potion stopped working, he might immediately get hurt by a spell and didn’t know how much Shadow Power the potion had absorbed.
Jesse slowly realized that he was unreasonably afraid of everything that could be afraid of, what could be going on?
Fereckert… Fereckert…
At that moment, Gakin’s confident expression froze on his face.
He softly shouted something that caught Jesse’s attention, and Jesse saw him take a few steps back, shaking all over for no apparent reason.
Surena noticed his strange behavior and ran over to grab his arm.
"Gakin, dear, what’s wrong?"
"No…" Gakin muttered, "No… I don’t want to be here, I… no!"
He suddenly lost control, shouting loudly, crying and running wildly into the distance, his position had already soaked through, could it be… he wet himself?
Surena looked really scared, her face turned pale. She glared at Jesse and shouted, "If something happens to him, I won’t forgive you, you naughty boy!"
After saying that, she ran after Gakin. The people drinking looked over out of curiosity, but quickly went back to their own business.
Now, only Jesse stood there, trying to figure out what had happened.
The spell cast was Fear, and if he didn’t have any Shadow Protection Potion, he would be the one scared out of his wits.
If Jesse embarrassed himself in front of everyone on the streets, Gakin probably thought that if Jesse was really involved with Surena, it would create a big sensation.
Jesse didn’t know how he used the power of shadows to cast the same spell, but no matter what, it was his first successful spellcasting.
Despite feeling excited, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he had missed something, preventing his excitement from reaching its peak.
Oh, what about the money?
He looked towards the end of the alley, but no one was there. Those two silver coins were probably gone.
